Have you noticed that ...

The most St George flags shown on vehicles, in support of the England team's entry to the World Cup, appear to be on German cars/people carriers?

Why is that ????????????

bradders 07-Jun-2006 21:13

most of the ones I've seen are on transit vans & old bangers.....

GsxrAge 07-Jun-2006 21:18

Chris. :burn:

Ozz 07-Jun-2006 22:15

I love England and being English but the flags just remind me of Union Jack shorts on holiday......

Fiver 07-Jun-2006 22:24

In her infinite wisdom, my mum bought me a flag for the back of my bike...

I may put it on and take a picture for a giggle....

National pride - go for it - too much suppression of individual views is stiffling this nation.

That's the problem with this country, we're too busy trying not to upset the minority, except the minority aren't quite the minority these days. Funny how such a small Island with the biggest history around the world has to feel ashamed of flying the flag. Maybe we should bend over and let the rest of the world bleed us dry! Oh no we're already doing that, ah sod then lets watch football while the government let peedo's and murders roam the streets without a BRITISH PASSPORT!!!!!!!!

bbc radio 5 live had a phone in the other day about the flags, i could not beleive some of the comments from callers of non british origin, they reckon we should not be allowed to fly the st george cause it represents the bnp (i dont think the bnp were around 400 years ago) & we should scrap it completely & have a new flag which represents multicultural britain....i had to turn off the radio cause i felt like ripping it out of the dash and chucking it out the window !

Steady on old chap, or the Message Board Nazis will be along shortly to censor your offensive viewpoint!

I'd imagine that exactly the same thing is happening in each of the countries that are playing in this years world cup. What's wrong with a little pride in your country. Personally I think it's great, and i'm from Northern Ireland, so I've no reason to support england, I think it adds to a general carnival atmosphere.

I'm with you there uncle - can you imagine anywhere else in the world putting up with comments like that. Can you imagine someone in scotland saying they should abolish the scottish flag! Our flag lies in the heritage and history of our country, and it's a cross and is representative of the Christian symbol. Whether or not you agree with the religon or background it what we have come from and what has made our country a very very priviledge part of the world to live in. Race has nothing to do with being English (or British).

keefer 08-Jun-2006 11:27

don't see why anyone would have a problem with someone else putting a flag on there car.
So what.
wont be doing it myself.
but will definitely be getting largerd up when the games are on
so bring it on :frog: :p :frog:

No that's not happening in all countries at all. There is not a single flag on a French car in France. The first one to do that would immediatly seen as belonging to the "Front National" (French equivalent to the BNP I think), and that's such a shame we can't use our national flag as you do.

I really don't mind seeing all those cars with the St George cross. And I do understand people who do that. Maybe I would even do it if I was English, who knows.

Your country welcomes so many foreigners (France as well but I'm not sure "welcome" would be the exact word) that I can understand the English people wanting to show that they are English in a country they're no longer the only one to live in.

That was the nice part.

And now the not so nice part.

Football remains football to me, it would be known if a brain was needed to play or watch a game of football :lol: :lol: :lol:

PS: I don't know who wrote it but in France also, we think we have the biggest history in the world. And I'm sure they do so in the States ;)

Not being English I wouldn't know about who claims what flag as their symbol. But then, that sort of thing has happened through out history (think swastika). I'm sure most, if not all of the people flying the St. George flag do so out of a sense of national pride, and to support the football team, so they shouldn't have to constantly apologise for feeling a sense of pride in their country/team. Why anyone would take offense is beyond me. It is the flag of England after all.

clockwork orange 08-Jun-2006 13:45

I agree we should be flying our flag - I have one in my porch for all to see. Its the distraction/safety issues with the ones on cars that bothers me - wouldn't want one wrapped around my visor........

Henners 08-Jun-2006 14:04

You have the South African flag flying outside your house Karen - are they playing in the WC? ;)

The point I was trying to make was that, with all this national pride on show, they mostly drive around in foreign cars :)

I don't really think England produces enough cars for people living on its territory :)
And furthermore, most of us can't afford them.

Depends what you call English [British] cars. We produced 1.8 million cars last year on British soil. The owners are foreign though.

I guess it's not Henner's point. How many of those 1.8 millon cars can be labelled as English (even British...) cars? If Jaguar, Bentley and Austin Martin produce 1.8 million cars then I will be quite impressed.

Anyway I'm sure I miss other brands, my point was just that England (or Britain again...) is no longer a country people can think about when evoking the car mass production, as France can be.

Instead of that you've kept your luxury car production. Which I think is good. And to come back to Henner's point, I think I (and a lot of people) can't afford a luxury car.

Fiver 08-Jun-2006 16:05

ok... here it is...

hehehe

Unfortunately mate Jaguars are posh Fords, Bentleys are VW's with knobs on and Aston Martins are slightly posher Fords than Jaguars. So even these aren't really British anymore.

I'm also proud to be English, just slightly disappointed that our national flag has been taken over by people who pronounce the name of their mother country 'In-gah-lund'

Snob? Me? Oh alright then...

Agree it's a shame. But I gotta contradict you:
I can see France from where I live and drive there quite frequently, and I see loads of houses with the French flag on all year round. Also see plenty of cars with the French flag on them.

Mind you, there are loads of them Frenchies wishing they were Swiss as they also display the Swiss flag next to their French flag!! Even funnier though, is the Swissies don't show any French flags - they don't want to be French! So amusing.....

Ade.

so on that basis, anyone flying a flag from their car can only do so if the car is british made ? it would be extreme to think that anyone who wishes to display their patriotism, can only do so if everything they use in life is "made in england", otherwise their patriotism is invalid......??

Ozz 08-Jun-2006 19:39

Better buy a Triumph bike next then!

So we don't know the same France. I must have seen French flags displayed by people something like 3 or 4 times in my life. I see the Union-Jack or the St George cross in gardens almost every day...

No way they wish they were swiss :lol: They may want to work in Swizterland to earn as much money as they do in Switzerland. They may also want to live in Switzerland because it's a beautiful and calm place but that's it. But being SWISS? You crazy? Swiss people are not very well seen in France, mainly because of the role they played during WW2 I guess...

There are 2 Switzerland, the German one and the French one. People living in the German one are the idiots (*) ;)

(*): only jocking :lol:

bradders 08-Jun-2006 21:58

gardens every day? only for the world cup, then you wont see a flag for toffee......well as soon as they have all falen of the cars anyway!!

From another site. Lighthearted posting !!

DEPT OF TRANSPORT INITIATIVE RE-LAUNCH, MAY 2006.

Press Release.

Due to the nature of the quality of driving in England the Department of Transport has now devised a new scheme in order to identify poor drivers and give good drivers the opportunity to recognise them whilst driving.

For this reason as from the middle of May 2006 those drivers who are found to be driving badly which includes:

-overtaking in dangerous places;
-hovvering within one inch of the car in front;
-stopping sharply;
-speeding in residential areas;
-pulling out without indication;
-never indicating on roundabouts;
-performing U turns inappropriately in busy high streets;
-undertaking on motorways;
-taking up more than one lane in multi lane roads and
-using mobile phones

These drivers will be issued with flags, white with a red cross, signifying their inability to drive properly. These flags must be clipped to a door of the car and be visible to all other drivers and pedestrians.

Those drivers who have shown particularly poor driving skills will have to display a flag on each side of the car to indicate their greater lack of skill and general lower intelligence mindset to the general public.

Please circulate this to as many other motorists as you can so that drivers and pedestrians will be aware of the meaning of these flags.

Department of Transport.
