Wrist broken,How long to fix

Officially broken apparentley.Even more wizzed off.
Ah well its only taken me "28 years" to break something.
Don,t hurt mind and luck a even bigger donkey with a cast on.Good jod ive got a angle grinder!

Anyone got any personal experience of recovery times riding etc.
Trackday booked for 2 weeks, race in nearly 4

Chaz 14-Jun-2006 01:16

8 weeks.

domski 14-Jun-2006 01:17

Last year I broke my left radius. It was split lengthways from the wrist back, about 3-4 inches. I raced 5 weeks later, but it took that long for me to pull the clutch in (plus plenty of painkillers).

Don't rush it, and do do the physio - I didn't and I now have restricted movement of my left wrist/arm.

Good luck mate :)

Good job y'r right handed then.lol

At least the physio exercises for a broken wrist will put a smile back on your face. ;)

Track day in two weeks is pushing it but strapped up should be good enough to race on in four weeks. :D

pedro 14-Jun-2006 06:55

broke my wrist a year ago,had to hve it pinned & wired.was in cast for 4 weeks, then pins out, then cast for another 2 weeks then start again, took about 4-6 weeks to get strength back to ride/work again.lots of supplements on market in holland & barretts,i doubled the dosage.

ali 14-Jun-2006 07:45

Terrible news Griff. :(

Best bet is supplements and to completely avoid using it until you're sure there's bone growth. I'd keep the race entry in, just make sure you notify NE in writing by the friday before if you want to cancel and you get the lions share of your money back.

Crap luck, you have my sympathies...

Murray Mint 14-Jun-2006 08:26

Hay Griff thats such bad luck. Keep your chin up mate.

Griff - did you get my message yesterday with Brian Simpsons phone number?
He is a whizz at getting broken racers sorted out

:)

fil2 14-Jun-2006 08:47

let it heal properly m8...dont rush to get on track and perhaps inflict long-term damage..it is after all only a club race series and your health is far more important.....the last you thing you want is the risk of another " off " with an already weak wrist...

Phil

Chris Wood 14-Jun-2006 09:09

Stay away from me fast man.

Good stuff. I do agree with Phil though, if you go down the road on it again while it's still healing you could really make a mess of it and add a lot of complications.

We're all idiots though, I'd probably race too .. but you should really have a proper think about it - maybe get some advice from a grown up ;)

:D

Gutted for you Griff - 8 weeks for mine before the cast was off. Physio afterwards. If you're name is Wayne Rooney, then you can get an oxygen treatment and weekly scans and you could be match fit in 5 weeks :D

There's always next year.

Chris Wood 14-Jun-2006 09:35

Is that weeksy logged in under fil2's ID???

easy buddy, I'm sure Griff's big and bad enough to understand.

Jools 14-Jun-2006 09:47

Well, there are quite a few bones in a wrist so when you say 'wrist broken' it could be any of the little buggers. I had the misfortune to break my right scaphoid bone in an off, according to the doc it's just about the slowest healing bone in the body. It took 12 weeks to get the plaster off and another couple of weeks of exercise and physio before it was strong enough for my wrist to be useful. Still gives me grief now, 25 years later.

weeksy2 14-Jun-2006 09:50

Yup, depends on the break really....

i rode about 4 weeks after braking my right Radius at Donny in race with Derby Phoenix.... hurt a bit... but not during the race... Assuming it's clean and clear... you're fine.

Do you have private medical insurance ? Brian Simpson in Ipswich is the wizard of broken bones and healing.

I would listen to phil.......I done this myself,I broke my radius, and gave it four half weeks before my next meeting..
second race out, had a big highside and broke it again..it took over 8 weeks to heal.
and its still not right now.....

paynep 14-Jun-2006 11:54

Griff, tough break mate - did you land on it again when you got spat off in the warm-up?
If you're right-handed I'd give as long as possible to heal - we only race 14 times in a year, but you want plenty more years use of the wrist!
But there again if I could qualify 3.5 sec quicker than the rest of the field I'd want to be out at Oulton......

Griff 64 14-Jun-2006 13:28

Hi Paul
Thanfully didn,t land on it again the second time so it was already broken.
Don,t think its abad fracture really.Crack across the end of the big bone and the tip has come of the other, but doctor chap said there not bothered about that bit.
More peed off about the nature of the failure on Saturday and all that hard work from everyone on Saturday wasted by a stupid MGB part!on Sunday

Congrats on your Saturday victory Paul, you looked good from the inside of Quarry.I hopr that felt special

Grib 14-Jun-2006 14:16

When I did mine it was about 6 weeks until it was properly ready to go again. It just gets really skinny and weak in the cast. Try not to use it for a bit, let those bones heal, then do all the exercises you can to loosen it back up once the casts off :)

skidlids 14-Jun-2006 14:38

It depends how bad the break is to how long you can expect it to heal. I only do bad breaks, so i'm usually in hospital for weeks/months, quickest recovery for me was when I broke my collar bone I was back at work after 5 weeks.
I understand laser treatment helps get the bones to knit together quicker for a speedy recovery, never tried it myself but know a racer that use to go that route and following his crash on Saturday when he came off on the oil left by Simon Knowlson's 748RS going bang and leaving Simon with a broken leg, then he may be going that route again.

As Ali said cancel the practice and keep the race entry for now if you have already entered, if you haven't you could always leave it to a late entry if you feel up to it

My wife has recently been daignosed with MS. Now that it has been confirmed she is able to visit her MS therapy centre for treatment. One of the first treatments that she's had is 'hyperbaric oxygen treatment' which she just started this week. Basically consists of going into a 'decompression chamber' like divers use, getting pressurised and then breathing pure oxygen for an hour. Apparently, this concentration of oxygen in the blood helps bones, wounds and scar tissue repair itself up to 5 times quicker than normal.

The chamber at my wifes MS therapy centre is naturally prioritised for MS sufferers, but apparently is also available for people suffering from other ailments...so if you could persuade your GP to write you a ticket ???????

AK 14-Jun-2006 14:51

thats good that is jools.
c had that to repair her back it worked wonders
