Tyre : Puncture ..? repair or replace

Got a slow puncture on the rear tyre..found the hole...very very small in middle of the tread.....its a nearly new tyre dammit.

repairable n safe..or is it a new tyre,>?

thoughts and advise please

i repaired a tyre on my XJR1300, rode it for a further 2k and took it over 100mph regularly. second puncture in a different part of the tyre finally killed it. repairs are only supposed to be very temporary and max 100mile and 30 - 40 mph. depends how confident you are with the repair.

Phil,

I picked up a ss with a repaired puncture in the middle a little time ago and put the wheel on my bike and rode it without realising it had a repaired puncture and found it fine! Im not sure I would repair something like your R1 tyre though...

Its the only thing that keeps you upright , i for one would not take the chance , replace it

Book it in with Mark at Ride in. He's repaired Crusts and i've seen him do 150mph on that.... i had repairs on a few tyres and have carried on for the duration of the tyres life.

If you've got £120 odd quid to burn then replace it. If you live in the real world then a repair is prefectly fine.

Some shops won't do repairs or they try and tell you that its illegal to repair certain tyres. Not true, they are just getting out of potential liability issues or they would rather flog you a new tyre.

I'd get it reapaired and then i wouldn't give it a second thought.

Have you ever seen a proper repair plug? They are huge, there is no way it will come out.

Fil we bung rear tyres everyday and have never had an issue with them, I would do it on my racebike thats how confident i am in the repair.

Repair. Did it on a Bridgestone BT010 on my R6, rode it for another 1000 miles or so, regularly topping a ton etc. No probs, especially as it's in the middle.

Keep in mind that a tire manufacturer is in the business to sell tires so there's really no reason for them to suggest patching a puncture. However, Dunlop (to their credit) offers this advice:

"Dunlop recommends only permanent repairs performed from the inside of the tire, using a combination patch/plug method. Never attempt a repair from the outside, or inject a sealant, or simply use an inner tube, a patch or a plug as a substitute for a proper repair. Only a qualified tire repair shop or motorcycle tire dealer should perform repairs. Inspection of the tire and adequacy of repair becomes the responsibility of the person actually performing the repair and Dunlop does not warrant the results of a repair in any way."

That just about covers their butt, but there IS a point to be made here ...

You need to use a proper repair kit and materials, and only on tires suitable for repair. If you're going to do the repair, then YOU have to remove the tire from the wheel and do the inspection yourself. Here's some guidelines for either you or the tire repair shop:

The tire should NOT be repaired if:

• The puncture is larger than 1/4-inch in diameter
• The puncture is not perpendicular to the carcass
• The puncture is in the tire sidewall.
• There are any cut or separated plies
• There is any bead or carcass damage from running the tire flat
• The tire has been previously injected with a sealant/balancer
• There is more than one repair in any quadrant of the tire or there were two prior repairs to the tire.

Blimey - would you ?

Scooter916 26-Jun-2006 22:59

Yea no worries, I have done them on Mucho more powerfull bikes with no issues, so long as the repairs are done correctly, and obviously the damage fits into the repairable catagory then there is no reason why not, And its a lot cheaper than a new tyre.

Ok Glynn - I defer to your greater knowledge on this subject. To date it wouldn't have been an option for me at all. In fact had a puncture on Dessie 3 days before Assen, replaced the tyre without a second thought.
