OK, i'm debating a swap deal.... thoughts and ideas please ?
 

Well as you know, my bike is up for sale, but i've not even had any worms on there... let alone a decent bite...

So some guy approached me and offered me his R1... 2001 model reg'd in 2002. Straight swap... couple of blemishes, but no more than on mine already.

So the main logic on the bike sale is 'money'... the money would go toward a deposit for the house...

"how does swapping it help then" i hear you cry... Well servicing costs is pretty much the only answer for that one... I had a belts etc swap from Nelly in Feb, so it's going to need the same again end of this year and then a 12k at end of next... R1 i can pretty much do myself...

So using that logic i can save ITRO £1000 more for the house over next 18 months....

The R1 is going to cost me £190 to swap insurance, but for that i get a 12 months policy (6 months left currently)..

Thoughts then guys ?

1. Keep the 916 but don't ride it...hey presto no servicing costs!

2. Buy the R1 as you can service it yourself.

3. Rent your body to the highest bidder.

3. i need to think of my finacee... she couldn't afford the £1,000,000 that some girlie would pay for me and would be quite jealous.

Option 4. Swap for R1. Sell R1 for deposit money on house.

I'm guessing there is a bigger market for 2001 R1's than 97 916's?

Option 4 is only really required in 18 months... i'd sell mine now for the right price but don't "need" to right now...

assuming they are fairly equal in price now... .how do you think they will be in 18 months ?

If you don't need to sell it now, and like riding it why on earth don't you just keep it until you do need to sell it?
I appreciate your comments on the servicing costs but if you think you can service an R1 yourself then I see no reason why you couldn't service the Duke yourself!
As for value, tricky one that. At the end of the day both bikes are worth what someone is willing to pay for them. I would imagine the biggest factor in selling would be that I expect you would have a bigger potential market for the R1.

Just a thought, the R1 will ultimately lose its value compared to the 916. In time, an '01 R1 will simply be an old R1, whereas the 916 will hold a certain amount of value.
Whether this happens in the 18 months timescale you mentioned, I don't know, but certainly a couple of years down the road it will.

I'd go with Chicky on this. Fair do Loz, 916 will appreciate more but it sounds like Weeksy wants the cash now!

Jan, I try to work, but more important stuff just keeps popping up and distracting me. It's a hard life ...

I know, I know, I should get a proper job, doing high-speed car chases and such, but where is the fun in that? ;)

If your not selling for another 18 months then keep the 916 as over that period the R1's value will drop like a rock. I think the 916 might be at the bottom of its value already in terms of age (only condition and miles will lower it now). If anything they may end up going up in price again, although not in the next 18 months I would think.

I'd also say that if you think you could service the R1 yourself then you can easily service the 916.

i can't do belts, valves shims etc on the Ducati myself.. which is where the larger costs come into it...

i will only use the R1 for 8000 MAX miles in next 18 months... it's not going to need touching in 8000 miles...

Deal done, decision made... the Ducati is no longer...
