How do I convert 749r throttle to 916 style 1/4 turn ? After riding a mixture of 749 & 999 over the last 3 and a bit years I have now found the standard throttle a pain. All seemed OK until a track day yesterday at Mallory when the 3/4 turn throttle became a hinderance. So, what do I need to convert the standard 749r throttle to a 916 style single cable throttle with 1/4 (ish) turn ? I guess throttle housings, and twist. Can I use a standard cable from the 749 or do I need a 916 cable ? Do I need to add any springs, or similar, to close the throttle or will the standard return srpings be OK ? Are there other points I need to watch for ? Does any one have the parts I need, or, should I be scouring flea bay ? |
Andyb has done this mod along with a few others. AFIK you need a 916/996 throttle and a differant cable. You can either get one made,or I have heard that injected Monster cables fit. |
In its simplist form its a 998 throttle and a new cable. The difficulties are, you need to strip the air box off of the bike...ish to remove the two old cables and replace the new one, this generally means removing the ignition switch. You dont need any new springs cams or anything like that. So its £40 for a new throttle and £15 for a new cable! You need a new cable because obviously the 999/749 ones are wrong and a 996 one is too short. I had one made, im not aware about a inj monster one fitting..... |
This looks interesting,.....expensive,but interesting! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/twistgrip-Duca...QQcmdZViewItem |
Was just about to post that KeefyB, looks good as it uses the standard cables which means no pulling the airbox to pieces, but that price, ouch !! If we could find out who makes it maybe it could be sourced cheaper. Would those plastic cams that fit other throttles not fit inside the 749/999 housing ? |
I quite fancied thestd 748/998 throttle from domino direct in italy, it has domino written on it.......looks cools on their website. |
Can you believe I have just emailed them an hour ago asking if the price is a joke or a mistake |
Isnt the corse billet one around £400............ |
I think they got there name wrong, they are called "PartsPlanet" with the prices they charge they should be called "On Another Planet" Andy if thats all you have to do on nightshift I definately need you to get me a job at your place. Sneaky, trying to buy other parts without me knowing !!! |
So what mod do I need to do in the airbox ? I just thought it would be modifying the cable entrance area. Is a 998 throttle the same as a 996 / 916 version ? |

The 998 throttle is basically the same as the 916/996 throttle. The only differance is the older bikes used a 'cold start' button underneath to crack open the butterflies while the 998 uses a lever the same as 749/999. Forgot to mention,my wifes Y2k M900i.e uses the same throttle as the 998.The injection throttle bodies and mechanism is very similar to the ones fitted to the superbikes,.....cant see why the cable would'nt fit either. |
you could do this . . . www.khushy.com/ccc.jpg I think they are about £100 now and I fitted mine in about an hour - it can be done without taking the airbox off - and it uses two cables!!! 3 cam options - sweet! Khushy |
Dont worr'y Ian I would have bought two |
"Forgot to mention,my wifes Y2k M900i.e uses the same throttle as the 998.The injection throttle bodies and mechanism is very similar to the ones fitted to the superbikes,.....cant see why the cable would'nt fit either." If you look at a 998---916 throttle cable it actuates the butterflys from the right side of the H cylinder. The 999 range operate the throttle butterflys from the nearside of the V cylinder. Other than turning the bellmouths around, you need a longer cable! |
