A technical question for those clued up mechanics out there. I have a major problem at the moment with an old classic car which I am getting back on the road for a wedding in early september. My problem is this. The car in question is a Ford 1934 V8 (model 40 US model)2 door coupe. There is a problem with the ignition coil which requires the unit being replaced or rebuilt. Having looked and contacted everyone in the states etc for a replacement item , no luck, best case one firm will repair it , but need allmost 2 months at least to sort it out, and is way to long. Does anyone know of a possible uk sorce of these parts, I have given up with nordian services in north yorks, the guy never answers his phone, at all. Next option is getting someone who does repairs or rebuilds classic car coils, if anyone knows of such a person orcompany , please drop me a line asap , thanks. another option that crossed my mind was this, is it possible to bypass the original coil somehow, which has to stay fitted becuase it mounts directly onto the top of the distributor, also into the same, and add a third party coil to take over. A case of using the exsisiting coil as a pass through sort of thingy if you get my drift. Car uses a positive earth , 6 volt system, very basic to say the least. does anyone have any thoughts on this problem, and how I can resolve it asap. this is a pic of the said distributor and shows how the coil fits the top etc. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z5 |
Check in Classic American magazine, as they have a directory which might have contact details for a club - On sale in WH Smiths, its a club called the Pre 49's you need to look for. The club link isnt working at the moment They have a massive library of old books and a wealth of info with many old cars over here. I used to deal with them about 7+ years ago but dont have contacts any longer. Go to this show at Knebworth on Sat/Sun this weekend, info as 'Rally of the Giants on this link.: http://www.knebworthhouse.com/events/events.html Sorry cant help more but I worked with the yank models from 60's, but know these guys could help. |
http://www.classic-spares-electrical.com/ They say they can repair electricals ??? Does it matter if it's us or uk ?? Dunno myself - just trying to be helpful :) I love classic cars :) |
thanks AK, I,ll nip into woking WH tommorow, and have a rummage through there mags. I'd love to go to the rally mate, but I need to get this car sorted in other areas aswell, and I'm on a mission to get it all done intime. cheers. R |
Can you use on of those CDI systems that used to clip onto the coil? Can't think who used to make them but they didn't use the coil, you take the points out and put an optical chopper in instead. |
might be worth you contacting the rally organiser tho as the club has been going for years. They deal with mainly 40's Fords and older so someone there will be able to help you fix the prob. Good luck, and when you get a late 60's or muscle car, I'll be able to help more myself:) |
Thanks for the link phoenix, this part is also used on the uk ford v8 pilot aswell, I'll give them a call in the morning, I'll get my cam out and upload some pics, its a real bonnie and clyde type of car, one bench seat in the front, and a dickie seat that srings out from the rear by the spare wheel. thanks R |

do you mean then sparkright system Paul? I think that only works on 12v and not on 6v, but I could be wrong |

Is there not a cdi type conversion for an early Beetle ? they were 6v electrics. May be able to make it fit your ford as a last idea. |
Give my mate Rex a ring on 01455 846963, he might be able to help.... |
have a look an old VW coil. 6v electrics but I am not sure about the pos earth bit. |
My first car was a 1959 sit-up-and-beg Ford Popular with a 3 speed crash gearbox, cable operated drum brakes and yes, 6 volt positive earth electrics. I would have thought that you could source a coil from something like this - cos I think your best bet is a temporary fix involving taking the original coil out of circuit and using another one in it's place. Should be easy enough to modify the primary connections shouldn't it? |
may be worth a call to this company; Humphrey and Willis 01737 761354 They are in Redhill. Real time warp of a place. Not a pc or calculator in sight. Run by very elderly auto electrical encyclopedias. May be of help |

Yep Alan, they are the ones! Must be a few years since they were sold though what with most cars these days having electronic ignition as standard. Didn't know they wouldn't work on 6v though. |
