996r or 998r - some advice needed...

Thinking of moving on...
wouldn't mind either a 996r or a 998r.

What is the best/difference between these 2 luvvlies????

Les

Jools 21-Jul-2006 16:59

TP and Rattler will be along in a minute to answer the bike question...BUT...

You can't have one because you're already quick enough ;)

les996 21-Jul-2006 17:02

Thanks muchly Jools...
I did silverstone a short while ago - no probs in the twisties, absolutely slaughtered on the straights - and I don't really want to go for a K6 :-(

andyb 21-Jul-2006 18:25

1cc................the 998r is the 999cc engine, the 996r engine is 998cc.

in truth its a bigger bore engine to achieve the cc which makes it revvier!

Ian Harris 21-Jul-2006 19:37

Hurts me to say it, but I reckon, objectively, the 998r is a marginally better bike (999cc engine, Carbon seat unit). 996r might have the edge, long-term, if bought as an investment (but what a waste that would be).

Have you seen TP's 998r up for sale (unless he's changed his mind again)? Two (ahem) careful owners and the fullest of full service historys

Rattler 21-Jul-2006 20:03

Nah - the 996R is the better bike, its got 1bhp less, but greater exclusivity, it was the homologated bike for the world championship winning Ducati (TB2001), the engines were the first of the testastrettas and as such were hand-built - the 998r in comparison was a mass-produced wannabe that never won a thing !!! ;)

In truth each bike would make a great choice, the 998R used to attract a greater premium as it was a later model, but now as they are both "old" - the delta is much less, if any.

Whichever you choose, enjoy
Tim

TP 21-Jul-2006 20:36

Why a 998R!!! Of course!!! ;)

Les, I got your PM mate and I'll be in touch tomorrow. I've just gotten home after two very intense, long and very hot days at Silverstone so I am completely cream crackered!

Jon 21-Jul-2006 21:17

Like Tim says, the 996R everytime. Take no notice of TP, he never had his longer enough to make a comparison.

les996 21-Jul-2006 22:15

so what are we looking at price wise on these two???
...around the 10-12 mark does that sound about right.

Les

Rattler 21-Jul-2006 22:24

probably 9K-11K

les996 21-Jul-2006 22:28

many thanks Tim

Ray 21-Jul-2006 23:45

The 998r is bigger bore and shorter stroke, gives a massive 3 bhp more, don't know what the effect is on Torque. The seat unit is different, no vents on the 8r and I'm not sure but the 6r seat unit might not be carbon.

Both are great bikes, the 996r was the last to win the WSB championship, the 8r was the highest spec enginewise of the line.

Ducati.com still has info. about these two bikes and still allows the comparison to be made spec wise.

Ray.

Hi Les,

Long time no see - since the rather damp Rockingham DSC day I think?!

Just in case you're interested, I'm on the verge of selling by 998S Bayliss Replica (I swapped the SPS for this last year).

Ohlins all round, Testastretta engine etc.

Not an 'R' version, but still 136bhp and I'm not looking for £12K!

Haven't sorted an ad or decided what price it's going to be advertised at yet (hence lack of details and nothing on the bikes for sale forum) but if you're interested let me know...
Cheers

Giles

PS. Avatar is the bike at Silverstone in it's track day clothes - no one came past on the straights, or in the corners for that matter!

andyb 24-Jul-2006 18:32

"the 996r was the last to win the WSB championship"..........

well apart from the 999r a couple of times..........and against proper 1000cc opposition!...........still memories eh!

I don't know what question you're answering, but the question posed is quite clearly "996R or 998R".

If it was;

"can someone who has no real interest in adding any real value to this thread, is trying to justify their overpriced purchase of a 999R and is hurting because their bike has now depreciated to a point where its worth less than a ""996R or 998R"" please respond"

Then your response would have been correct ;)

keefer 24-Jul-2006 19:59

ouch
that's got to hurt :D

andyb 24-Jul-2006 20:04

:frog: It just makes me laugh "the first of the testastrettas", " the last to win the wsb, " and so on...................move on!:frog:

Rattler 24-Jul-2006 20:23

I'd move on, but you wouldn't be able to keep up ;)

andyb 24-Jul-2006 20:29

I see theres potentially another woman coming into the DD.........how many does that make? ;)

I didn't know you were joining!!! ;)

Rick 24-Jul-2006 23:17

I had a choice of buying the 996R or the 998R
I brought the 996R, all for the above reasons, eg, last of the 916 - 998 range to win, first of the testa motors. I just liked to 996R more, Its my dream bike and are luckily enough to be able to own one, One of ONLY 2 in SWEDEN
But I doubt you could go wrong with either, no one would complain if they had a 996R or a 998R sitting in their garage .

TP 24-Jul-2006 23:57

At the end of the day, no matter what 996R owners say ... the 998R is the ultimate bike in that shape.

I looked for a 996R initially because I'm a Bayliss fan and it was the last one to win a championship ... but the 998R is the highest spec bike ever to be built in the iconic shape. It's that simple.

No matter what you say you can't circumvent that fact.

The 998R is the best bike ever built in the iconic shape.

Trev996r 25-Jul-2006 00:28

It has to be the 996r as the 998 is more refined and I have had my 996r for 3 years and she is awesome

MARTIN H 25-Jul-2006 00:53

I would be happy with either. Not actually bothered that the 996r did better in WSB and all that. I do prefer the seat unit on the 996r compared to the 998r. Even though the 998r has the carbon seat I just prefer the plain old 996 one. Havent ridden the 998r so I dont know if there much difference between them. Dont know how many 998r exist but the 996r is the one everyone seems interested in.

I bought my 996r off ebay and will not sell it in the forseeable future. Funnily enough the bloke I bought it off has just emailed me asking if I still have the bike and how I'm doing with it. He replaced it with a 749r with fully race kit etc. He did say he still misses the 996r though and has thought about getting one again. I've pointed him in the direction of DSC and mentioned TPs 998R for sale.

bike mad 25-Jul-2006 01:20

theres a 996sps on piston heads I don't now how close that is to the R but it's £7000 I bet you could get it for £6000 ish.
:flame: :burn: :burn:

Chef 26-Jul-2006 13:37

The 998R is the better bike - no question

I was going through the same decision a year ago & in the end bought a 998S - same performance as 996r - but a lot cheaper - I do a few trackdays -imagine crashing a 998r!!! - I don't think I'd ever forgive myself

I personally think the 2005 999R will be a good buy in a few years.....discuss!

9rrr 26-Jul-2006 18:24

996r 998r

Your all wrong.... Mines the best 996R. Pumping out 160BHP at the crank. Thanks to John Hacket.
my bike is awesome. Roll on France and the Napolean route in 2 weeks time. Bring it on.

MARTIN H 26-Jul-2006 18:58

160 bhp? How much did he charge for the Turbo?

Seriousely though thats a pretty impressive output. Whats it like to ride?

9rrr 26-Jul-2006 20:04

996r

You dont want to know, but it was worth it...

nathanhu 26-Jul-2006 20:30

after owning both a 999s and a 999r, i can tell you if you havent ridden the short stroke motor hen you dont know what your missing. :)

andyb 26-Jul-2006 20:53

ditto..............

Ray 27-Jul-2006 09:56

Errrrrr the 998r has the "short stroke" motor. 104x58.8 as does the 999r

The 996r and the 999s doesn't 100x63.5

Go to Ducati.com where the current models can be compared with those of yesteryear

Totally agree, well said that man.

I'd go for the one in best condition out of whats available (probably TP's)

My only other reason for suggesting the 6R is the best is to poke fun at Ray and TP:lol: but i'm evil.

Ray 28-Jul-2006 18:17

On the basis of the use BDG puts his 996r to I would recommend the 996r for short journeys, ideal for someone who doesn't do many miles:D

The 998r is a superb long distance tourer more suited to HIGH mileage riders:D :D.

Ray.
