Which UK monthly mag? ...

Which monthly mag and why? (apologies to those of you outside the UK)

JACKO748S 31-Jul-2006 19:19

FB, PB, RPM (Newish mag knocked up by Colin Schiller - founder of FB), Superbike, Racer and MCN Sport (if it's about).

The missus works at WHSmith head office - I get a discount in their shops lol....

Jools 31-Jul-2006 19:27

Well I get most of 'em quite regularly except Ride, Motorcycle Sport & Leisure and Classic Motorcycle Mechanics. I've been known to pick up those three titles sometimes, but not on a monthly basis. Of the others, I get Fast Bikes and TWO regularly and I've just started getting PB again because it's new look is spot on for me and it's rapidly becoming a favourite. I like the way they concentrate on the type of bikes thee and me have and don't seem quite so obsessed with the "New R6 stomps all over the opposition because it's half a kilo lighter and 0.000001 of a second quicker to the pub" (plus PB just had a very nice article on 888's that made me feel very smug :smug: )

The one I can't stand is Superbike for the simple reason that they have a monthly column that does nothing but take a snidey bitching session at all their rivals. That would be OK if Superbike was superb, but it's not, and the editor Kenny Pride (?) comes across as a real knob

Streetfighters! Its awesome and there is always the occasional Monster and nude chicks!!

Yorkie.

Did RPM make it past issue 1 - that was the only one I have seen?

Gaz 748 31-Jul-2006 19:50

PB still the best, then TWO, then Bike.

twpd 31-Jul-2006 19:55

None. They're all krap. I'm sick of the fashion parade biking has become - largely driven by bike mags.

Henners 31-Jul-2006 20:23

RiDE

.. Steve Rose is a God :)

Yeah it did - issue 3 was out about a month ago.

Saying that, I've only ever found it in Borders here in Swindon.

I don't think it's "mainstream" enough for the likes of Smiths etc etc...

I get the impression it's more of a quarterly issue.

Jacko.

Gizmo 31-Jul-2006 20:50

Last isue of RPM i have is 3, good comparison test of DS and S DS one of the few i've read where the reviewer actualy notices they ride differently. Fast Bikes has changed a lot since Future bought out Schiller, Dan Harris has gone now as well.

My favourite is Motorcycle Racer which has had some decent interviews and photographs recently. Road Racer X is similar in US.

The Japenese mag Bikersworld is always worth a look at for some wild customising if you can find it.

oh, all time favourite was Italian Bike from CHP, it was sad to see that one go :(

Col996s 31-Jul-2006 20:57

Motorcycle racer for me.

KeefyB 31-Jul-2006 21:19

Bike and TWO for me.
I think I buy Bike out of habit,....been reading the mag from around mid '74.
I like TWO because of Witham and Mackenzie, two of the fastest and funniest guys out there.

Nattyboy 31-Jul-2006 22:05

Anyone remember Italian Bike ?..got every copy before it went pop and there still a good read !

Bought PB last night for the 851/888 article and was pleasantly surprised...thought i'd picked up TWO or BIKE by mistake ! Good photography, well laid out and excellent content (remember PB in the eighties/nineties ??!)

yup, see my post above. I've been trying to talk a Ducati riding publisher mate of mine in the US to do a similar type of mag for a while now :(

Glyn 01-Aug-2006 01:19

just like to ride

You look at plenty of (ahem!) 'gentlemans leisure' mags tho!;) :D

Herb 01-Aug-2006 09:59

I suscribe to bike but buy PB most months now as well. PB lost their way for a while but I think they are back on track.

I used to suscribe to classic motorcycle mechanics when I had my z900. The technical articles were always helpful but after a year or so it got repetitive.

Steve M 01-Aug-2006 10:13

Motorcycle RACER

Twinfan 01-Aug-2006 11:57

PB and Motorcycle Racer every month. The others occasionally (RiDE, BIKE, TWO)

BDG 01-Aug-2006 13:53

Bike, ditto KeefyB, been reading since i was a sprog and been inspired by many stories.

TWO and PB.

Have a trawl thru the rest and if interested in summat will buy.

Read first issue of RPM and would like to get issues 2 and 3 but no sign of them. Early Schiller stuff wasa good laugh.

i've probably got 2 and 3 Shaun, pm me your address and i'll send em down.

http://www.themagazineman.co.uk is useful if you are looking for rare or foreign publications

Martini 01-Aug-2006 14:12

I subscribe to RIDE but I'm not going to rebew when this one runs out. Rose has had a personality bypass and it shows in the mag.

Superbike is a good laugh (assuming you are not offended by the swearing and naked women).

All the mags run the same articles (bike tests, tyre test etc) a few months apart. Each mag just puts it's own spin on the test.

Anyone remember Motorcycle Voyager (MV - dedicated to touring)? I subscribed to that but it went bust!

And why is a subscription to MCN so expensive?

Have to agree in the main, though PB always strikes me as a bit different. BIKE as well - mainly because it has enough pages to do all of the same tests as the others and some different stuff as well.

Thanks, pm sent:D

MARTIN H 01-Aug-2006 14:54

Anyone want a load of old Bike mags? Free but buyer collects etc. Cant bring myself to bin em. Emptied a load out the loft (still loads up there) Also loads of old Car mags, 100s of Top Gear, Car, Performance Car, Autocar, Autosport etc etc. Probably about 600 mags total.

Henners 01-Aug-2006 17:03

The format of so many bike magazines seems so similar - road tests/product tests/out of date sports news etc.

I like the new format of RiDE and anything that Tim Thompson edits gets my vote (PB currently). BIKE just don't float my boat no more :(
