Gearing

Don't no if this helps but at a track evening Aug 1st came away with the same gearing as Oulton! As mines a 620 I don't no how relevant this is but I dont think Donington is a top speed track!! But then again wot do I know about top speed!!!

Some early 620s have the same ratios, as I understand it?

fil2 07-Aug-2006 10:58

OMG...how complicated......................................

ok try this....can 583 please offer the year and the gearing they running at

Oulton

Brands

im interested as i seem to be running the same gearing everywhere.?....

Im thinking the 583's just dont have the puff to pull the taller gearing

Dony has a hill remember - so you need to gear for that too.
Just as Oulton - there is just one level straight, so I reckon you need the same gearing for both.

domski 07-Aug-2006 11:06

I've run the same gearing at Cadwell, Brands, Assen, Combe & Oulton.

HTH

Chris Wood 07-Aug-2006 12:05

Same gearing all year....94' 600ss - 15 / 40.

Still able to pull 9500 at Assen on the straight bits...

I'm not convinced that changing the ratio, gives you that much benefit on the 583's.

Hair balls...

fil2 07-Aug-2006 12:14

i have also run the same gearing all year that suprised me.....did not pull top At Assen....will i did but it just went slower LOL....but due to that light side wind we had..???....

other than that the same all year which has suprised me....

Dog balls.?

Anyone got some spare balls?

WeeJohnyB 07-Aug-2006 14:01

How likely are you to reach max speed and for how long? Unlikely? Certainly on the CB I find that I have put a 42 on and left it there - you need drive out of corners, not top speed? The only issue might be how a particular sprocket sets you up for individual corners.

Bowling balls...

As I lack some of the skilll of you younger guys I have to look at getting the bike to do most of the work for me which in part means changing the gearing to suit my style to the track

Oulton, I started with 15/42 and then changed to 15/43....lots better

Castle Combe....15/41

Brands 15/42 (dry) 15/43 (wet)

Cadwell same as Brands 15/42 in the dry

Donington dry I would use 15/42 as per Cadwell and Brands

Castle Combe has no hills to speak of so will pull the higher gearing

It wasn't the hill at Oulton that made me lower the gearing, it was places like Lakeside where I found I was holding it in fourth and over reving rather than hooking 5th for a few seconds in the first race, in the second race with the lower gearing I made far more use of 5th gear

and that was with a pre 98 ss wasnt it skids?:)

. . . with an early Monster engine I believe???

Anyway, I ran 15/46 gearing at Cadwell, Castle Doom and Oulton, CC could have gone down one on the back I reckon as it was revving out early on the straight, that's '99 M600.

Yep pre 98 SS and as Zimbo says its a Monster engine circa 1996 so NOT one of the real early ones

The standard gearing for my bike as a 600SS was 15/41 and the gearing that would have been standard on the unfaired Monster that the engine came from would have been 15/43

i ran 15/41 at donny on a track day the other day i think 15/42 would be perfect but id dont have one and run out of time to order one so will be on the 41
