schuey Retires ( will there ever be another one)? So what do you think? Those that know me, know i'm an avid fan of his, and I have been a follower of his career even B4 F1. As a Racer, and politics aside! Do you think there will ever be in your lifetime, another driver who will out achieve his massive winning spree? Mav |
Best Driver in the world Oh and does that now make me the best Driver in the world, seeing as i was the second best b4 he retired !LOL |
Admire his achievements but his dominance in the sport was as the expense of close and competitive (for that read interesting racing). It is time to let some new blood fill his shoes (a tall order arguably but he cannot remain within Ferrari ad infinitum) Now if only Rossi could somehow be beguiled into taking over the mantle from him. |
Who cares, souless human being added nothing to the sport. He may be talented, but he always had the best toys, when he does not where is he? |

I know I'm a bitter twisted old g*t, but I never liked him anyway. Yes he has loads of facts and figures up against his name, but no style like Senna or even any of the recent hard racers. He would never have racked up all the trophies he's got if he had any real competition over the last few years. |

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. |
His statistics speak for them selves and there is no denying his ability but at what cost he has been totally ruthless at times putting other drivers lives at risk. In time hopefully we will forget his bad points. I think if Senna had survived he would have severely dented Schumeys record. Hopefully Luis Hamilton may bring a new lease of life to what has become a dull event when compared with the excitement of MotoGP/WSBK/BSB |
Will he bow out with 8 Championships? |

Still, 8 would stand for a long long time. I'm sure he don't need the money anymore. He could allways go back to LeMans and win there again. |
One of the very best. Period. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to tell my children in the years to come that I watched him race. |

Pretty much sums it up - he set records that will probably stand forever. Those who say he did it all in the best car - utter rubbish, he won races in his early years at Ferrari when the car was nowhere near competitive - even his first championship was achieved in a car that had nowhere near the horsepower of the Renault Williams. He may have been ruthless on track but so was Senna, it's what sets aside those with the true desire to win - Rossi is ruthless on track too don't forget. Didn't see this weekend, but when he got up on the podium did he still jump for joy and have a beaming smile on his face? 90 wins and he's still excited and happy every time he gets up there? I don't call that soulless - for soulless, try the sour faces Raikkonen, now he's miserable, he really is a robot.. |

read the bbc.co.uk section on him a fair assessment IMHO |

Yes he's odd but he is also Finnish, I've met quite a few an it takes a certain kind of person to live where they do. Let's be honest here, would you prefer to watch a rider like Loris openly showing his skill and abilities, no doubt he is trying and very entertaining. Or the likes of Pedrosa, who are obviously going to be a major star and may challenge Rossi's records. Sadly I put Michael in the Pedrosa camp, who cares about records. When it's that moment of outrageous skill, bravery and simple honesty that Loris shows and makes the racing worth watching, Don't think you will see Loris take someone out just to win a championship like the he did when he took out Hill. Yes he has one more title but at what cost, his reputation is clearly that of a cheating dirty no class fu**wit. |
The statistics say he is the greatest world champion there has ever been, and he is! He will not leave Ferrari but will become an ambassador for them in all matters and will probably go on to be a technical adviser as well as a tester and new driver trainer. I`m just waiting a reply from Ferrari after I offered my services yesterday, in the light of Poosmackers retirement, but as yet have not heard anything back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
He's a talent, and won't be replaced for a long time - if ever. The Schumacher/Todt/Brawn combo will go down in history. They raised raised Ferrari from mid-pack to front runners in a very short space of time and stayed there for several years - a very difficult thing to do. I hope he works with Ferrari on their road cars like Senna and the NSX. |

I can't see how anyone could put Schuey in the Pedrosa camp - Pedrosa came into the top class this year, aged 20. Nearly wins the first race, 4th race of the season (I think) and he wins.. was he ecstatic on the podium? No, he's a real misery, barely even managed a smile. Michael on the other hand - 90 wins, and still absolutely over the moon to be up there... how can you compare? As for your earlier comment about Senna, sure Senna was a fabulous talent as well, and but for that tragic day at Imola, would no doubt have won more titles, and Michael would have won less... but let's not get too misty-eyed, Senna was a ruthless driver as well, he had no hesitation in driving people off the road, he was the one (rather than Michael) who changed the way the game was played. |

I class Pedrosa in the same camp as Michael, that automatic machine that you cannot stop. Surely the whole idea of sport is to watch a competition, the years when Schuey walked away with it, as there was no challenge was really boring. I was a fan for years then stopped because it became just too boring. Prost/Senna, Hakkinen/Schuey, fantastic to watch complete opposites, intense and exciting. I know he can only race what's put in front of him, but for me the whole idea is to watch some sort of duel, not history being made as Michaal walks to another championship, as no one has a package to challenge. This year is the only time I've actually wanted him to win, simply because he has been the underdog and really wanted to see what he can do when he was pushed, I do hope he wins it. Alonso would not have won last year if the Ferrari was not so cr*p. I think the real sad part of Michaels era is he has had no real consistant challengers, therefore his victories look slightly hollow. |

Now I can agree with your sentiments. I watched for years, but then turned off at roughly the same time, because the racing became dull. The years when Mansell, Senna, Prost and Piquet slugged it out, late 80s etc were brilliant. But surely any driver/teams job is to do the best possible job - it can't be the fault of Michael or Ferrari that no-one else managed to challenge them for a period of a few years. The idea of sport is indeed to watch a competition - but not from a competitor's point of view - to a competitor (certainly at world championship level), it's about winning. For what it's worth, I'd like to see a single tyre manufacturer, Ferrari lost last year because Bridgestone weren't as good as Michelin. I'd like to see the same in GP - Bridgestone turn up for a weekend with good tyres, Loris goes well, the weeks they get it wrong, he struggles. Michelin on the other hand are always pretty consistent.. No-one really knows how fast the Loris/Ducati package really is, and how much of it is down to the tyres. |

he is a complete ****:alien: no denying he is a talented driver, but straight out of the school of bad sportsmen. Which pains me to admit he did liven up a very boring race series with his 'antics' |
How can 7 world titles be "hollow victories" against poor competition? |
Can't argue with what it says in the history books. The square jawed one has never had a good relationship with the UK media, specialist or otherwise. Seen as the enemy by many He has been 100% dedicated to his chosen sport for a long time. Ever hear him ****ging the team off in public? The most amusing thing about yesterday was Flavio's Bs Response when asked if Schumacher M will be missed, maybe not the best time to ask with all the apparent political shennanigans going on to ensure 2006 is title number 8:eek:  Can't really see anyone beating his record for a good while, Now Jacque F Villeneuve has gone only Alonso will have won a championship in the 2007 season. Ray. |

Isn't it a case that anyone who is head and shoulders above his peers will always appear to lack any consistant competition? The same could be said of Rossi - who has really challenged him? Biaggi? Gibernau? Despite the sometimes lack of pace of the Yamaha this season, he'd still be doing very nicely. If it wasn't for a tyre failure in China, an off in practice at Assen, and 2 engine failures (particularly Le Mans where it was in the bag), he'd be well on course for another title. It's just pure class that sets these people apart... |
They are all great in my eyes. Full respect to them all. However if someone waves flags and dresses up in fancy dress they have personality. They all get labelled boring otherwise. But by all accounts Doohan was a bit of a chacacter away from the track. Even recently in the news for brawling. For me the fact that they beat all comers is enough for me . Ask Dom. |

Is that a vicious rumour? |

Your gonna get a label soon, it's for doing less work than me and being here too much. :D |
no doubt about it a great driver, shown not only in his wins but with heroics like taking second place when driving 40laps with only 5th gear. Pity he had to ruin his reputation with several acts of bad sportsmanship, and that is putting it politely |

The single biggest private Donor in the Tsunami disaster shows the man has a heart, £6 million. Maybe small change to someone who has given about £30 million to support those less fortunate in recent years and has earned a reported £300 million. Shuey is a private person and maintain a very low profile with his private life. Don't mistake confidence for arrogance. Two very different things IMHO. Prost and Senna have driven into each deliberately more than once aledgedly. Anyone remember the TV progs about The Team. Maclaren when Senna was driving, a little insight into what made the man Tick. As one pundit said Shuey has been lucky enough to be able to decide to retire unlike Senna. Two sides to every story. Ray. |
