Monster - few questions! Only got it last friday but a couple of questions so far (some may be answered by a Haynes manual assuming there is one): 1. The seat - it move back and forth about 2 inches. Is that normal? Had a look underneath and nothing appears to be missing. 2. Front brake. I have put it down to the wet weather ride but when braking from more than about 50mph it gave out a large squeel. The braking seemed fine and there was no judder so have ruled out warped discs... 3. The clutch currently bites too close to the bar for my preference. I assume there is an adjuster at the business end of the cable for this to change the bite position? (Have not really had a chance to look but a quick look and seemed to be a nut to move). |
HMM 1, not right 2. Strip and clean, reasemple with a bit of copper paste on rear of pads, check anti squeal shims. 3, No adjustment hydraulic. try bleeding. Hope this helps Glyn |
Seat. Is it actually located at front. It slots under a locator and then sits down at back on a pin or a latch and clicks. Brakes. Sounds like worn pads or dust trapped or needs copperslip smeared on BACK of brake pads. My back one sounds like an old bus. Clutch try bleeding. Overnite cable tie the clutch lever to the bar to expel air |
Seat cured! 2 to go.... Has anyone bought the ducati workshop manual online? I saw a link from Yorkie on the Monster site. 2.5 euros I think... |
Did I help. Hope so. Good luck with others. |
Ozz I have a PDFs of the 2000 Monster 600 I can email you if you want, the parts manuals and the owners handbook around 4.5mb for one and 3.77mb the other |

Am about to do the clutch as today the bike was moving forward with clutch lever all the way in! Also think I'll get some new front pads. Anyone recommend a make/dealer? |

The clutch on my M600 has been feeling a bit iffy of late, as though the clutch hose is expanding to far or the mastercylinder isn't moving enough fluid, not quite dragging but doesn't seel like it use to. Lots of pads around including some on Ebay. best stick with the tried and tested Brands Carbon Lorraines/EBCs/Ferodo/Bendix etc |

Cheers Kev. Will check what MY year bike is as although registered in 2000 may be a 1999. On a couple of sites there were different pads for -99 and 00- |
Ozz the easy way to spot the difference is the early calipers only have one central mounting pin with the later calipers having two pins. The early calipers with only one pin for the pads also use a 40mm bolt spacing where they mount to the fork leg with the later ones having a 65mm spacing. |
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DUCATI-MONSTER...QQcmdZViewItem These are later model caliper pads I have never tried these armstrong ones so can't recommend them as I only recommend stuff I have tried and would use myself |
ozz, I just looked at the pics you put up when you first got it, 40mm mount early caliper so should have the single pin and either those EBC pads or the Brembo ones would suit |
Kev you are a marvel. I will check the number of pins tonight. If it is the early brake then must be a late 1999 bike. HPI states it as a MY2000..... |
Paul, Ducati are terrible for mixing and matching with parts that they have left over or in stock at the time, so don't judge the year by the parts it has. It may also have been a 1999 bike that sat in a showroom for a few months before being registered, so would show up as a yr2000 bike (but not a MY2000). |
Its a bitsa! I always seem to buy vehicles which are right on the year they change slightly so end up having to work out which bits fit!! |

Looks like you have a complete early chassis with the later engine, so don't try fitting the 675 kit |
Think I'll just upgrade next year to the 748.... ;) |

You know it makes sense ;) |
I know I know but depends on office purchase/house move/paying tax etc...... But I have 2 bikes to part ex now..... |

Hehe! You're nearly ready my young Padewon, the force is strong in you. :ninja: |
Certainly is strong. I have been to the dark side and returned...... |
In fact I have just had bad thoughts and done a bad deed. Local independent has a 748 up for around £4k which happens to roughly be the value of my two..... Email sent ;) I am sure they will tell me to poke it but you never know! |

Yes, you naughty thing! Go for it! |
Checked tonight and it is the earlier one with a single pin... |
Did you get the clutch problem sorted in the end? If not it could be a knackered slave cylinder. There was a naff batch of these fitted on bikes made around 2000-2001, but most should have been replaced under warentee by now - I've had 2 bikes (both monsters) recalled for this myself. |
Yes much! Now actually have a clutch but going into first is a little crunch. Turns out resevoir was empty hence the lack of clutch! Can even get neutral whilst stood still now... |
It may still be worth bleeding the clutch with new brake fluid. If the reservoir dropped level dropped too low it could have drawn air into the line, and it would make sense to replace the fluid anyway if it's very old. Did you loose the fluid very gradually or did it suddenly vanish? If the reservoir dropped fast there may be a leak in the system somewhere that needs sorting? |
