Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Got a nice big cheque through from the Inland Robbers today for overpaid tax. :)

Had Mitch phone me to say that 3 rockers need replacing. :(

The clever-dumb balance has been restored.

Neither its just those bl@@dy Ducati Rockers

Ains. 26-Sep-2006 06:19

Antonye, I know it well!
Just got 2003/4 tax year straight, waited 2 years for the rebate to come through, got the cheque the middle of last week. The day after said cheque arrived Mrs Ains. is driving to work and some dumbass drove into the side of the car. Very likely to be a write off, and since the car is only worth about 300 quid (but is still a brilliant little car) it looks like I'll be coughing up about the size of the IR cheque for another one. :o(
Not the first time either, I won a photography comp' a few years back. Got a cheque that exactly matched the cost of the new freezer we had to buy coz the other one frazzed itself.

Ains.

Is there a mod for those rockers

Mello-Yellow 26-Sep-2006 09:47

Buy a testastretta or jap bike :D :D :D

In all seriousness i dont think there is a 100% cure. There has been lots of threads on this subject in the past.

It was a case of poor quality chroming from the factory which eventually got sorted out. New rockers should be ok.

You can have the original (poor) rockers rechromed but you end up with a harder coating that wears away the cams rather than the rockers ... which just ends up more expensive!

antonye 26-Sep-2006 09:49

Oh, forgot to mention that our oven went ping at the weekend too, so there's an engineer on his way out to sort that as well ... it never rains, eh?

Luckily we have a double oven so could still cook the sunday roast :D

It wasn't wasted, the "problem" was sorted in the sixties,

Ray.

Ducatis don't need mods to beat up their rockers, they can manage that by themselves.

I am concerned about this though, especially after finding a tiny sliver of something that weren't magnetic on my gauze filter when I changed the oil on my 888. I know that T8's aren't supposed to suffer but then it's supposed to affect 996's more than 748's. By my reckoning it could apply to any four valver (especially if earlier rockers were replaced by some from the chocolate wrapper chroming period).

I dunno why somebody hasn't sorted a mod by now, according to Sigma it's caused by the lethargic way that oil gets up to the cams on start up (as much as 30 seconds apparently). Surely it wouldn't be hard to devise a little secondary oil circuit with an electric pump that just feeds a couple of small diameter oil lines that run up to each cylinder head? The 'leccy pump could mebbe relay off the same circuit as the fuel pump so that it squirted a dollop of oil on the cams as the fuel pump primed?

Antony,

Our oven goes ping too...but that just means the pizza is ready......... ;->

The "engineer" (*) must be rubbing his hands at the thought of the juicy call out fee...

RX

* don't get me started on the "engineer" rant -
"Oooh, you're an engineer, can you mend my fridge/car/drains/tree etc etc"..
"You're right, I am, but I'm not a repairman/mechanic/bog cleaner etc"

Ray 26-Sep-2006 12:46

Jools,

A couple of companies have come with a solution to this, one is megacycle in the US of A?

They refinish the rockers but it ain't cheap to get done.

Ray.

The bad news is that the engineer couldn't fix it.

The good news is that he wouldn't charge, even for the call out!

He was there all of fifteen mins as he checked over the oven and tried swapping some parts over, but no joy. He said that we'd need to find out from Whirlpool direct what the error code meant as he didn't want to order parts on a guess-whats-broken basis. Once we'd found this out he would come back and sort it!

Redruth 26-Sep-2006 13:38

You could look at this another way, Ant. You could think "how very nice of the IR to pay for my new rockers/oven"

I could do, until you realise that it was my money in the first place that the IR took when they shouldn't have

Redruth 26-Sep-2006 14:00

Yes but they 'saved' it for you and gave it back just in time to meet Mitch's bill - how lucky was that?

Trust me on this one, after years of explaining to people about investments going down as well as up, I've learned to look on the bright side of just about every possible financial scenario.

Take my recent bike purchase? Can I afford it? No. Did I want it? Yes.
Do I need to earn some money now to pay for it? Yes.

Do you have a Will? No? I'll come and do one for you and you can pay for it out of your recent IR refund. I'll even give you a DSC discount. Howsaat? xx

If they really did "save" it for me, then where is my interest? Theiving *******s ... should be wearing masks.

Don't remind me about Mitch's bill ... full service, 3 rockers, new forks, new cush drives, clean and tidy ... it ain't gonna be a small one ;)

You do? B"gger. I mean, congratulations for being amongst the 40% of the country who have bothered to make one.

Mitch is worth every penny you spend with him, as you well know, and I'm very pleased you have a Will because that's one less person I have to worry about :)

Monty 27-Sep-2006 12:43

Funny thing is-if you underpay your tax they charge you interest, and probably fine you as well just to rub it in. If they overcharge you you are lucky to get it back at all.
My mothers family are cornish from way back-she always says 'there are two types of people-the excise and the rest' our lot definately fit into the latter category..............
