ANyone bought a place in Turkey - who know someone that has ? Barbaras mum left her a bit of money when she passed away last year and shes quite keen on a place having gone on an inspection trip recently. Have to say I had to eat some humble pie...I wasnt interested in going to Turkey in the slightest (especially after the bomb in Marmaris) - never fancied the place, but the place was stunning scenery wise, cheap living, and the turks are amongst the friendliest people ive met. The place were interested in is on the bodrum penninsular - just be interested to hear some opnions as i'm 50/50 at the moment !! Cheers Nat |
i did work other day for a customer who had a pad in turkey, liked it very much & was waiting for when they join the euro money game so he could make some big money.drawback was the flights (4 hours+). he said spain was to expensive to buy so he plumped for turkey. no regrets though. |
I keep seeing adverts on the TV for a big prospective owners event at the NEC but cant remember the date - might be worth checking out? Likewise - I know someone who is looking into property in Bulgaria at the moment prior to their move into the 'euro. F |
my money would be on croatia, in fact it is. |
I bought something recently in Eastern Europe and am looking to expand further. Bulgaria and Romania are probably looking good now with their EU acceptance. Belarus is still very cheap but, shall we say, politically unstable. As is the Ukraine. Can't help with Turkey though ;-) |
I bought a turkey last December. It was very tasty and I have no regrets. What was that? You said "in Turkey"? Oops! Let me see if I can be a bit more helpful then. Property is unique in being the only asset class (apart from maybe art but that's debatable) that lives in both the investment and personal utility world. If you're looking at it purely from an investment perspective then you have to compare the prospective returns (both rental income and capital appreciation) against your alternative returns. So within this, you need to bear in mind that the Lira has been all over the shop recently. If you're buying for personal reasons then it boils down to how much you like the area, whether you are happy to keep going back there, how important is it to you that you have your own place there rather than renting or hotels - and it sounds like you've taken a shine to the place (I've never been so I wouldn't know). Let's call a spade a spade - saying "I'm popping over to my place in Turkey" sounds a hell of a lot cooler than "I'm going up to Manchester to check on my student hovel". NOW, I'll get my coat.... |
Think ive missed the boat with croatia price wise...the reasons for buying are to have a nice holiday home for the kids to grow up with but also an investment obviously. Went over to bulgaria for a look round but turkey would seem the better best from an investment/renting out point of view (all year sunshine whereas bulgaria is limited with its season - especially if you go up north towards Balcik) Nat |
I loved my time in Turkey and the people were fantastic and really friendly. I'd quite happily go back, there's some VERY beautiful women there and of course Australia has an historic link to the place. |
You're clearly looking for a bit of validation so let me be the one to say "Go for it!" You want the kids to grow up with it so it's a long term investment which are generally determined less by the return you get than the affordability of it now! ps Do we get mates rates? ;) |

as chi says; go for it. property in the uk doubles in value on average every 7 years and if you choose the right place at the right time in considerably less time. this is also the case abroad more so in 'emerging' markets. as with any investment; the higher the risk the higher the potential return. always look at the worst case senario; if the property doenst go up are you happy just to have it as place you will want to go to every now and then? can you hold on to it long term and not be forced to sell it? i would say go for it definitely, but but a place you have a 'feel' for and where you would happily holiday each year if; say; you couldnt afford to go anywhere else. if you feel like that its pretty certain others will too. good luck. could swap you a week in croatia for a week in turkey maybe in the future? |
Some really useful advice there guys - I do appreciate it, and it was good to hear from the likes of you dickie who have actually 'done it'. I guess sometimes you need other people to give you a kick up the arse.. Heres the development were looking at; http://www.dreamhomesww.com/index.cf...odrum.tur1.cfm Its got everything going for it really; - Being built by a massive (quality) developer with proven after sales back up to help with renting etc - 2 golf courses being constructed within 3km (all year rent out potential) - 15 minutes from the airport (no hire car) - Bodrum airport is being extended and budget airlines are beginning to have a sniff (1 signed up already) - Loads of on site amenities including shuttle services to nearby towns etc - As it wont be finished for 2 years - they will take 40% now and the balance in 2 years with 2 additional prices increase guaranteed by the developer before completion. Good point about would I be happy holidaying there. The answer is yes..its got plenty to keep the kids happy on site, I liked the country and the scenery is breathtaking..! Swap weeks Dickie ? - you bet mate ! Mmmm..now I wonder if theres a market in Turkey for Ducati bling....? lol !! Nat |
I`m interested if anyone has a place in Hungary and what they think of it. I`m also looking at the west coast of Ireland, Itally (just North or South of Rome as well as Germany around the Eifel mountan region. Any comments at all are welcome.......................except for my weight problem! |
The other 'up and coming' option we looked at Rob was Calabria in Southern Italy - up and coming but not developed yet and not much to do as its essentially a farming region (ruling it out with 2 young kids) and flights are still pricey. But if I didnt have kids and wanted a longer term punt thats where my money would be going. There is a company we looked at with a good website and were doing inspection trips for £25 each !! On that note - i'd really recommend inspection trips. I've been on two now - very professional and no pressure and its like a mini holiday !! They just drive you around looking at places you want to see and ensure you have plenty of free time to get to see the country your visiting Nat |

Why on earth would you want to go there? ![]() Can't see the attraction myself  |
Expanding on the 'mates rates' thing can you make sure there are a few Ducatis in the garage too!!!!!!!! Oh and if it's near a racetrack that would be even better!!!!! |
My father spends half of the year out in Turkey, - living on his boat. He retired and spent years sailing around the Med, got to Turkey and has neither gone forward or back, - Marmaris marina. It is a cheap friendly place, - he has been al over the Bordrum region and a lot of Turkey with many Turkish friends that he has met, - and he has been invited to so many local family weddings and the like. Prices of property are going up; - investment is going into the tourist areas. As has been pointed out a good investment can be had on a country pre acceptance into the EU, - but Turkey has been told that it will not get EU status for a while yet, - until it sorts out many issues that it has, - some human rights. If you ever want a good easy going book to read on turkey, - “Birds without wings” by Louis de Berniere, it has an interesting mix of novel with historical fact through the rise of Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk). Couple of things, - they are into motorbikes, mostly big trallies and they love football, oh and don’t go on a day trip to Greece from Turkey, - it is not worth the hassle, Agamemnon’s boys have still not forgiven Paris. Nat, - my Dad is over their right now, but due back in a few weeks time if you want to speak to him do let me know. |

:o :o CANNIBAL!! How could you?:D From what I've seen, read and heard, just about the most important point of buying abroad is to use a solicitor who is familiar with the pitfalls of buying in your country of choice. Also if I was paying anything up front I would want some form of bond or insurance to cover any risk.....builders seem to have a habit of going bust and leaving people thousands of pounds out of pocket. Also, if it's meant to be an investment it's worth adding up the total cost including interest. We've got a ''hut'' in Wales and if we factor in mortgage payments, rates, electric, water, insurance costs and maintenance etc. and sold up tomorrow we would just break even. And don't forget that if Labour get into power again they will probably try and tax you for owning it. But when you get there and sit out on a summer evening with your glass of brown ale I guarantee you will think it's worth every penny and all your troubles will be left behind. My advice would be follow your heart and do it.....but don't ignore your head ;) |
All sorted Philthy - part of the deal was that I kept the T8..you should have heard her..! " I know its a bit more than we wanted to spend love but you dont really use your 888 very much - how much could you get for it ???" I nearly punched her - lol !!! Sell my pride and joy 888 - whats that saying ? - "Sell my 888 ?i'd rather shove wasps up my arse"!! Nat |
