Dave,

Welcome. You found it OK then. Did you see MCN this week? Was that the owner of your 851 that was featured in the sidebar. Can't be that many who paint the frame yellow.

Rgds, Rob

Otto Otto Otto 29-Sep-2006 13:25

Congratulations mate
Has anybody put together a register of 851/888 SPs??
Did anyone notice the Thorsten Durbahn feature in Performance Bikes on RC30s? - I think I had the only one in the UK until last year - what a bike, I already regret selling it

Justin

Yes, I have an old list of all the DOC 888/851 owner members, and an xl spreadsheet of the SP4S owners I've managed to track down (5).
Could do with updating mind.

If you lads want to start sending model, frame & engine number and top yoke plaque number where applicable I'll start up dating again.
Oh, name as well but no address or owt.

Ains.

Good to chat tonight Dave, and pleased to see you finally got one. Post up the photos when you get yr Broadband sorted. (I'm keen to see how it looks with the gold frame!)

(Maybe we'll see it up at Hartside one day, eh?)

Steve

ps. Otto - I had the mag with the RC30s featured - but posted it to a friend in Belgium. I seem to remember they called it 'The best bike ever made'. (I had mine on the drive today whilst clearing space in the garage, and parked alongside the 888 it looked tiny, almost like a 400!)

Otto Otto Otto 30-Sep-2006 01:18

hey wee vee four
Just out of interest - honest opinion, which do you prefer?
I seem to remember posting to you some time ago when you were still looking for an RC

Hi Justin

Which do I prefer? Hmm! A loaded question here I think!

If I'm being honest I'd have to say that the RC is the 'superior' bike in terms of performance across the board. It feels both lighter/faster than the Ducatis, and it handles better than any bike I've ever ridden.

Having owned only 888s for the last five or six years, it's come as something of an eye-opener I'll admit. I really didn't expect an 18yr-old bike to be so capable. It really does 'go-like-stink'!

Direct comparison with my SP4 may be a little unfair, however, since its suspension (at both ends) is leaking and overdue a rebuild. I'll know better next summer how they really compare, since the SP is to be fully rebuilt/refurbished over the winter.

Those are the facts, and they are purely objective. The question 'Which do I prefer' is more subjective though, and that's a question I'd find more difficult to answer. I'd hate to have to make the choice!

Steve

ps. When the SP is fully sorted, I'll do a back-to-back riding report.

WOW.....nice !

Otto Otto Otto 01-Oct-2006 02:36

Steve
I know exactly where you are coming from.
888 SP and RC30 are the only two bikes that I have ever craved and it's good to know that you are of like mind.
I have never felt so at one with a bike as I did with the RC - incredibly easy to ride very fast, and the best sound in biking (cue DSC outrage!) - but the Ducati feels very organic and great in different ways.
I'll be looking for another RC in about 2 years to ship to OZ.
All the best
Justin
