What was/is the best method youve found for losing weight? Apart from chopping an arm or leg off............... |
eat less/exercise more. |
Keeping busy,in my case that means running after kids.:( I certainly believe that diets dont work unless you change your eating habits permenantly. |
Set yourself a challenge, such as a half marathon, triathlon or something along those lines. It then gives you the motivation needed to get up and do something. Also, it helps if you can then train with a group...spending hours running or swimming on your own can be boring as hell...whereas with a group the training seems so much easier. At the end of the day...don't diet...waste of time. Its the old saying I'm afraid that its a lifestyle change that is needed...join your local swimming/triathlon/running/hockey/football/rugby/etc etc club and watch the pounds fall off. As an example, I have weighed upto 16.5 stone in the last 3 years...I'm now down to 13 3/4...from taking up triathlons as a fun event. A mixture of running/swimming/cycling ensures that you don't get bored, and the variation in training keeps things fresh. Its not rocket science mate...a simple fact of burningoff more calories than you take in. The secret is finding something to do that isn't a chore. |
My wife lost lots of weight using a green-day (vegatables / fruit only ) and then meat-day type diet, weight watchers I think. Having said that I tried it and it did little for me. Dickie has it spot on I think + the proviso of dump the booze as well, not a nice prospect really :o |
Missus clears off ...................... i cook for myself .................... i lost 2 stone :) |
Pre preg carbon fibre and titanium, I'm surprised you had to ask:D as a last resort less pies:lol: or at the very least run after the pie van for a few miles, Eat only when you get Hungry, not when the clock says so, Ray. |
You know my recent trip to Almeria, i lost 1/2 stonne and 4% body fat.............!! i started at 16.8 stonnes a few weeks ago, prior to Almeria. Ive now done my first stonne and they tell me more importantly lowered my % body fat to merely obese........ Thanks for that Dickie...... |
cutting out bread and fizzy drinks, along with not eating late in the evening worked for me. Along with some light excercise went from 16st 4 to 14st 3 in 2 months...... |
Quote:
Yeah im trying to achieve that...........only fizzy i have now is red bull. |

Oi don't give our lass idea's |
alcohol !! when i had my accident a few years back i couldn't drink and cut it out for a few months. I don't drink that much anyway but it had a big result. I am trying to do it now, but it doesn't always work. I tend to find little and often works for me as then i don't end up binging and pigging on **** just becasue i am hungry. |
Dickie has it spot on. Iwent on a Literlife diet and lost 5 1/2 stone in 3 months but put it all back on. |
Get a proper job, where you have to work for a living instead of swanning about all day in fast cars. That should get the weight off  |
fatty get out of the panda car and run after the criminals ! (fatty) PMSL !!! |
Ahh, but it all comes to plan when you sit on them and they cant breath,...........i mean move!;) |
I lost 3 1/2 stone in 3 months by doing 3 to 4 spin classes a week at the gym, each 45 minutes, made sure I worked very hard. Got very fit too. also stayed off the booze, chocolate, cakes, crisps, coke etc Have kept may weight down by occassional gym visit and being careful what I eat |
The only way to lose weight, apart from chopping off body parts, is to consume less calories than your body needs. Think of your fat reserves as the bank. Too many calories and your body stores them in the bank. Too few calories and your body starts to make withdrawals to keep up with current expenditure rates. It doesn't matter which diet you choose. They all work on calorie control, even the ones that don't realise they are doing it such as Atkins. Everyones calorie requirement is different. Your age, size, metabolic rate and lifestyle all determine how many calories you need. Try cutting down your calories by a couple of hundred for a few days, if that doesn't work try reducing it again. Eventually you will find a point at which you start to lose weight. Stay below that point and weight will continue to come off. Go above and you will gain weight, and hit that point repeatedly and you will maintain constant weight. The key is to closely monitor your calories. Weigh everything and evenutally you will get to a point where you can look at something and know roughly whether you should eat it or not. Think how long it took to get the weight on in the first place. Don't try to lose it too fast or it will not become your new lifestyle, which is what it needs to be. It's all about what you are happy with. I'm about 1 stone overweight but I can live with that because I get to eat the things I want, but if my weight starts to creep up I know what I need to do to bring it back down. |
Ian Harris has a degree in nutrition or something doesn't he? And a competitive cyclist, he looks pretty lean to me - send him a PM The thing it has been for me, is running really ... just lots of exercise. Running, swimming, cycling. ... since having my second knee op, it's less running unfortunately |
For health reasons I took yeast and dairy out of my diet for three months. That's no bread, no wine (can still drink Champagne!), no gravy or sauces. you'd be surprised what they put yeast in! Just good proper food without the fuss. I'm a stick insect anyway, but within the first two days I lost 1/4 stone and had to find non dairy/yeast weight producing foods to put it back on again. It works a treat. A bit like a detox. And makes you feel great. The lb's just fall off and you eat as much as you like. Btw - it did the job. Scabby face healed and my hair grew back. If you're a baldy Andy, I doubt it'll have the same effect ..... |

Exercise is undoubtably the key. MUCH more important than cutting down what you eat. Calorific Intake against Expenditure is certainly what makes you gain/lose weight, but if you cut calories without doing sufficient exercise, your body will go into starvation mode and fight you every step of the way. Exercise benefits your body composition in several ways beyond just the calories you expend while you're actually exercising. Out of all the "fad" diets, the GI one is probably the most sound, but it only addresses part of the story....Atkins is just self-abuse. I could get SOOOOOO boring on this subject...there are a few key steps you can take that are pretty well foolproof if you have the commitment to see them through. Most important thing is that everyone is different...the same principles will work for everyone, but have to be applied in ways that fit in with your individual lifestyle. Andy, pm me your email address if you want some more info. |

I've been between 10st8 and 11st6 since 1974, so I'm not offering any advice on how to lose large amounts of weight :D However, the one thing that the diet-fanatics dont like to advertise is that if you semi-starve for over 48hrs your body goes into a sort of famine mode and starts breaking down unused muscle to use as food, and lays fat down so you can survive the famine/winter that it has evolved to cope with. The answer is to moderate your food intake while you increase your regular activity level enough to increase your average metabolic rate. Then keep up the activity level and be patient. The weight usually took a long time to put on, so you shouldnt expect it to take 10 minutes to lose ;) [/end advice from another stick insect] ps oh ! and what activities do i recommend ? well I like to run on the south downs for a couple of hours at a time, or mountain bike on them for 3-4 hours, and I used to windsurf in up to force 8 gusting 10 in 6m waves, and boogie boarding, and motorcycle trials, and mogul skiing. in other words just go out and do stuff ! it really doesnt matter so long as you get carried away cos you're enjoying it. |
i lost three stone in 30 days - i survived on 3 pints guinness and 20 marlboro lights every day(for sustenance and mental composure)and a madras and rice once a week- for exercise i just went to work every day- went from 17 stone to 14 stone!!!!!! am now a touch over 13 stone, not the best of diets but i did raise over a thousand pounds for a cancer charity!!!!!! |

The Dr Ruth Diet Plan Get yourself a BP that's consistenty 160/130, get onto the medication - you'll find you can't drink and the pounds will fall off. OR Healthy diet and exercise, minimal alcohol and deny yourself everything that looks and tastes delicious (which was my previous, less successful method of losing weight) Just identify the things you like the most and cut them out. You'll be miserable but you'll be thinner. |
Swimming Moto X Fags |
A good dump is a very quick and easy way but is short-lived. Longer-term, I use the smoking and not eating very much method. If you've seen me you know it works! Under no circumstances should you do Atkins or other low-carb diet. They screw up your body permanently. |
Join Weight Watchers, best laff I've ever had, and I lost nearly 60lbs. |
get a proper job and do a bit of work for a living:eek:   |
1. Move to India 2. get tropical disease(preferably amoebic dysentry) 3. drink beer (never stays in long enough to lay down fat) 4. for good measure get a tapeworm 5. try the NHS for a cure 6. everything else that everyone else has suggested 7. resequence your DNA if parents are lardy hope that helps..... |
I note your in Yorkshire......I should still have a couple of years more than you then.....  |

Running does it for me Andy-not that I have done any serious running for about 20 years-I used to be able to drop 7-8lbs in a week when seriously training-that's from a starting weight of about 11stone. I weigh about 11st 5lb -11st-8lb now. John |
Running, cycling, wieghts.... none of this is the answer. The answer is in your diet and your overall lifestyle. I'm different to lots of people on here, because i've lost weight and NOT put it back on.... Why ? because i've changed my whole lifestyle, not just had a fad diet and a bit of exercise. Andy, you firstly need to go out and buy Mens Health magazine and/or join their forum. You will find a lot of interesting and exciting techniques for weight loss. In simplest terms.... Hard work.. effort and will power. If you don't REALLY WANT to be slimmer... it won't happen. Fizzy drinks and alcohol are the most commmon big bad things for UK males.... get rid of them... and you're on a start point. |
Interesting Steve-so the fact that I don't drink fizzy drinks, and hardly drink alcohol is why I'm fairly skinny-I never knew that. I thought it may have something to do with 3-45 minute spin classes a week-oh, and trying to keep you lot in order. But it has worked for you dude, you looked pretty fit at the weekend-for a fat scouser................ John |
