Anyone own a classic car Anyone own or have owned a classic car. If so, what ,any good, bag of ****,sold it to buy a Duke etc |
I don't think they're considered a classic but my first car was a Datsun 260Z and I loved it to bits. Bad points - they rust! I'd definitely have another one :D |
1968 mini cooper "S" mk2 |

Had 240Z fantastic car & yes they do rust. |
Definately a classic Tony.I had a 240Z when i was 19.CRP 111k.Had to sell it as i couldn,t afford to re insure it.Went to South of France in it.Broke my heart to sell it.New owner wrote it of within the week.Shame it was called a Datsun. |
Have owned a Jaguar 3.4 MK2 saloon now for 23 years and dont get to use anything like enough! |

I wanted a 240 originally but couldn't find a decent one. The 260 was something special, I really loved that car. I've been thinking that when I eventually go home I'll get another one, or a 240, and do it up. Not original though, apparently you can fit the 1UZ-FE or 2UZ-FE engine straight in them. They are the 4.0L and 4.3L quad-cam, injected V8 with an alloy block that Toyota/Lexus use in the SC400 and the SC430. There's a company in Aus called Sprintex that make a twin-screw supercharger that bolts straight onto the engine, and still leaves room to close the bonnet :D Woohoo! |
Yeah ,forgot the rust bit.Took a right babe out in it and procceded to impress her with my Formula 1 ability and skill. All went quiet until the end of the lane when she calmly climbed out and refused to get back in as the floor had been moving beneath her feet.Sure enough on lifting back the carpet the whole floorpan had disappeared and her feet were supported by the carpet and remains of the chassis leg! Another reason why it had to go. |

 My mother had a Holden Gemini that did that, only it was my feet that went through it! I nearly soiled myself :D Get another Z Griff, and gissa go! |
My first car was a 1973 MG BGT in white with Chrome bumpers. Lovely :D |
I didnt know you had a MGB GT Dave? A collegue I once worked with loved them, he worked at Myra and they got the first ones in to test... Does an XR3 resemble a 'classic' ??? My first car :) I always wanted the Turbo, I'd still have one in white. Andy |

Still got my Jaguar Mk2 3.8 that I bought when I was 21. Been restoring it for more years than I care to remember. Had a few others over the years. S1 e type, Lancia fulvia, Alfa 2600, Triumph Vitesse, Hillman Imp, Jaguar 420G, Jaguar S3 xj6, Volvo Amazon amongst others. I would recommend reading up on any model car you may be interested in an talking to owners clubs etc. Nowadays its best to buy the best example you can find rather than buying a restoration project. Even the nicest cars will usually want bits sorting out but beware the cars that seem ok but want a few "finishing touches" usually these turn into full restoration projects! I have found the hard way that you can basically take what you think it will cost and at least triple it when faced with a car needing a few jobs. What car you thinking of? |

Hate to admit it I had one to. Shuuuuuuuuuuuuuush |

And your pace too, eh ;) My cousin had the same and he's now got the Focus ST, always in the blood! Andy |
About 18 months ago had a Sunbeam Lotus sitting in the garage for about a year, only needed a bit of work to get it back on the road, but never got round to it. Sold it to a mate who sorted it out in about a month, got to drive it (had owned previously as rally cars) and was disappointed, things had moved on. I guess the point is not to compare with modern cars, and accept the older stuff for what it is. Still look at some "classics" and get an attack of nostalgia. Could probably cure myself of that by hiring something from the many companies that have sprung up in recent years:D Ray. |

Hey, looking at the condition and aesthetics of your 583, your pretty good at your work too Griff. Nice bike. Andy |
I wish i could put up my pictures ! I have a pic of 7 or 8 240/260 Z's out side my work shop ! back in the 80's I used to restore/tune etc etc peeps came from miles around to have them done ! eventually I sold the business out to a guy named William galliers in shrewsbury ! some cash and the original "BIG SAM" wonder if anyone on here knew what that was? anyway tripple webber conversions were my speciality and later putting 280 heads on 260 engines ! phew < a trip down memory lane ! I'll see if I can find the pics! before those days I was into 1600E and lotus cortinas lets meet up and have a beer and bring out the albums ! mav |
Mav - a man after my own heart! I love Z cars :D I like the 1600 too :D |
I've got an Aston Martin DBS V8! Absolutely awesome in every respect. Has the added bonus of making the Duke positively frugal to service! |
Quote:
Mav,Big Sam was the 240Z built by Spike Anderson i think for use in saloon car racing, driven i think by Win Percy? Samurai on the side of it somewhere i think. Was it built by samurai motorsport or something. I remember William Galliers having loads of parts and ex rally cars etc around that time.Small world hey. |
|
Lotus Cortina's eh Mav-hmmm-I used to go to college with a load of guys who worked for ForMoCo back in the late 60's. I of them built an E93A with a full Lotus Cortina underneath-that used to fly-for it's time anyway. I was more into VW beetles, put a 1600 Super 90 Porche engine and transaxle in one, changed the front hubs for the Porche ones as well. Engine got a bit smokey so we all went down to Autocavan who were the main dealers to enquire about replacement barrels and pistons-£40 each + another £40 for the gasket set-£200-they were having a laugh, that was a lot more than I paid for the whole car they came out of. Took the lump out and sold it to a Porche enthusiast and built a fast 1600 VW lump for the money I got for the Porche lump-4 barrel Holley carbs anyone? John |

Chris glad you enjoy your Aston DBS V8.I,m sure its a fine example. The one i look after occasionally has to be the most overrated pile of Shite ever to go on Gods highway.Typical of alot of small quantity handbuilt vehicles of that time. This is a very early car i see that has led a average life so it hardly holds itself up as a perfect specimen. There are alot of cars around that disappoint once you get to drive them and thankfully a few that are a real surprise |

Grif go to the top of the class mate (good memory) Yes it was the very one I had will was just getting into the Z's when i sold him all the bits/cars etc etc ! I still see will but he has moved on nowadays he Owns a company called Toy's for big Boy's he's mainly into tanks and military stuff! small world indeed mav ps I sold "Big sam" in a deal for a Z200 fairlady! remember them? |
Quote:
I know the fairlady! great little car :) Datsun were on the money back then, they had a great run of cars :D |
My first ever car cost me a fiver. It was one of these... ![]() Only mine was registered 277 MMY and was duly named Emmy 1200cc Sidevalve engine, 3 speed crash gearbox (reverse was where 1st normally is - with no gate!!! ), cable operated drum brakes, semi-elliptical transverse suspension, 6 volt electrics and wipers that were vacuum operated from the inlet manifold (they slowed down or stopped when you put your foot down). I used to get the **** ripped out of me by all my mates, cos they were working while I was at Uni and they could all afford at least £50 for their cars. I wish I still had the old girl though |
Italian only for me, not technically classic but i love it... 1991 Lancia Delta Intergrale 16v, Italian import so no rust! came to GB in 1998. proper italian spec, leather, trick dash with laptimer!, aircon, full power motor etc etc. had it about 4 years and love it. Never had a single problem with it either!??!!? and goes like stink. Arbath Chip and exhaust otherwise standard. doesn't stack up on the spec sheet compared to friends modern Jap sports stuff but WAY more fun, way more character and makes you feel like a driving god! heart pumping stuff. |
Mines again possibly to new to be termed a classic but i'd say its a definitive 80's car. 1986 sierra cosworth 3dr, black, with only 42,000 on the clock. Had it 7 years now, hardly drive it but when i do its always a teenage dream fulfilled,a great old car imo |
MG midget, Wish I had never sold it, Not much cop for getting yer leg over in but still has a place in my heart, May even buy another for the garage when all the kids motorbikes/quads are no more. glyn |
Glynn, could make your day tomorrow.Got a cracking one for sale.Spent a fortune on it,virtually new body etc.Swap for some of that Italian junk in the garage and you,ll have space to put it as well |
chap who has worked for me for 15 years has a MK1 Escort with a Cosworth engine in it.Putting Green injectors in it this week and a new fuel pump and remap should bring him up to 400bhp.Looks like a pretty standard RS 2000 from the outside |
Got a 1986 911 targa in guards red with whale tail spoiler. Owned it for the last 5 years. Prior to that I had a 1977 6.6ltr black TransAm complete with gold firebird on the bonnet and a red leather interior ..... right pimp mobile :D |
