Hills spin on Michael

Well Hill has won more than we have, you have to at least read his opinion, even if at the end you disagree and think he is just a bitter 1 time winner.
I'm on his side I'm afraid to say, sorry Mav! :D

MJS 23-Oct-2006 20:51

This is the Damon Hill who twice drove straight into the back of Michael when trying to pass him in 1995?

This is the Damon Hill who was only even remotely in the 1994 championship race because the FIA manipulated the championship - how many races were Schumacher/Benetton excluded from for one reason or another?

This is the Damon Hill who's first race win in that controversial 1994 year came at Barcelona when Schumacher drove 2/3 race distance with his Benetton stuck in 5th gear - and still finished second?

This is the Damon Hill, who in an identical car in 1994, struggled to get anywhere near the late, great Ayrton Senna, and yet somehow claimed to be a genuine title contender?

Every so often there are truly greats in any form of sport - Senna was one, and Schumacher was another.

Jeff mate,, don't apologise , as you are missing the point !
Damon (over the) Hill was a fantastic motorcycle racer (fact)
he was also a real good courier rider (fact)
His mother was beside herself when Damon wanted to enter into the world of motorcyle racing (fact)
so she, along with frank williams set out a plan to put Damon in a car (fact)

He, Damon was then sent practicing lap after lap after lap and did in fact do more laps of estoril than any other F1 driver ever ! (fact)

Damon never came up through the ranks of karting (fact)
he was a manufactured Driver (fact)

He's great in a band (fact)

he's a real nice man too (fact)
But he is not and has never been 1% the driver Schumi was/is (fact)

thanks for reading

mav

and thats a fact !

Don't see what the problem is with his comments that I have just read on BBC News site?

Damon said he was a brilliant driver but that his winning all the time was bad for the sport. Too right it was. It's become a boring procession which I, my family and many of my friends have stopped watching.

If you want real racing watch a Grand Prix race from the seventies or modern bike racing. People actually overtake each other time after time and you get wheel to wheel racing, Wow!

the phantom pieman 23-Oct-2006 23:40

So what about the fact that Michel was a cheat ....

or does that not count ?

Or is that acceptable gamesmanship ...

Me might have been a great driver but never a great sportsman ...

PS yes, I have met him and he's a nice guy in real life .....

As a bloke - yes. As a driver, I agree with the original post, he's a far better driver than I will ever be - anyone at that level is, and Hill was undoubtedly very quick over a single qualifying lap, but he's just not up there with the top drivers - every so often someone comes along who is in a different league to everybody else - Senna, Schumacher... Rossi...

Nobody mentions Kenny Roberts Jr as in the same league as Rossi - but he won a world title, but we're all agreed that Rossi is a genius, and Roberts Jr isn't. Same with Schumacher and Hill IMHO

I think there are two sets of comments by Hill on the BBC website now - no-one can disagree with his statement above, but it's hardly Schumacher or Ferrari's fault for doing a better job than the others - same as it's not Rossi/Yamaha's fault for doing a better job than the others in GP

As for the comments that Schumcher changed what was acceptible in F1 - that's nonsense - Prost and Senna started that in the late 80s when they decided it was ok to take each other out (even as teammates) in order to stop the other one winning...

Remember

second place is just the "First" looser !

Good God... that makes yr spine tingle just watchin it... thanks for postin that
link.
Those days were a bit before my time but from what i've heard it was'nt just
the racing that was better but the whole scene... alot of the drivers were real characters... big personalities like Damon's dad Graham and James Hunt etc

i'm pretty sure those drivers never had nutritionists n personal trainers, let alone
driver aids on their awsomely powerfull cars with only a rudimentry understanding of aerodynamics n rubber compounds... they were more like rockstars... Drinkin n fightin n womanisin n then racing the next day...

All alot more dangerous i know but thats the point is'nt it?

Wrightly or wrongly its more exciting to watch poeple taking bigger risks!

Am i romanticising it all?:burn:
