Sweeties from days gone by

What were the sweets that you miss most from childhood that aren't about these days?

Here are a few of mine..:pig:
Space Dust
Chocolate Tools
Bones (crisps)
Fizzle Sticks

Have a look here for some of the old favorites;)

Spangles.:D :D

Florence 25-Oct-2006 06:59

Mint Cracknell. That chocolate covered green glass fibre looking stuff that blasted everywhere when you bit into it. Yummmmmy
And for the more mature people like myself, some may go back as far as remembering "Firemen's Hose" a thin, long, red, strawberry flavoured kind of liquorice:eek:

Loz 25-Oct-2006 09:01

I miss Clark Bars. They never made it to the UK as far as I know, I'm not even sure they're still available in the US.

Anyway, I miss 'em.

We get a box delivered by them every few months in the office. :D Superb service and the sweets ... oh god the sweets.....

Melnie Mouse 25-Oct-2006 09:21

I remember 'pacers' they were white mint squares (exactly like opal fruits) but with 3 green stripes across em. - but i weren't keen on them, I did like spangles, but my fave

was the pyramint. It was dark chocolate triangle pyramid with white mint fondue centre.. Mmmmm making my mouth water.

I wish they did a cadbury fruit bar though, you know like fruit and nut without the nuts though, i rememember writing to them once, ask them to do one, for people like me who hate nuts in choc, or for allergies, apparently they did a 'just sultana' they told me but wasn't successful.

Shame... I bet it would be now... Cadbury's is the best!!!!

Great website!

They have the Spanish Gold that I was going to mention :) remember getting that as a nipper, packaged to look like a box of tabacco.

My faves:

Olde Jamaica
Aztec

and anything with peanut butter which I think one of the reasons we had to stop going to Florida :o

There's a shop in our little town that opened it's doors as some sort of 'olde sweete shoppe' where all the sweets are in big glass jars and get weighed out into little paper bags. I gave it two weeks before it closed again through lack of custom, but no, they seem to be doing quite well.

Mind you, I liked Jamboree bags that had a few cheap sweets and a tacky plastic toy in them. And those tubes of bright yellow sherbet with a liqourice straw. Then there things that I think (believe it or not) were called Jubblies...a sort of ice lolly in a pyramid shape. One of my favourites were things called, rather imaginatively, Potato Puffs...which were, surprisingly enough, puffy bits of hollow potato shaped a bit like a mini shredded wheat but about half the size. They're not around any more, the nearest thing to the taste of them is Hoola Hoops, but obviously a completely different texture.

Yeah,
Curly Wurlies and WagonWheels were much bigger!!

Col996s 25-Oct-2006 20:25

Not a sweet but an ice cream. Can't remember what they were called but they were made by Walls and had toffee in the middle. I think they were named after one of the characters from the Beano?
Any other ice creams that were good but long gone?

And '' Force '' breakfast cereal......'' High 'oer the fence leaps Sunny Jim ''

'' Force is the food that fortifies him ''

I think just lately the Cadbury's twirl bar has got shorter too, not happy with that, even tho you get 2 sticks, they're small.

Oh, and yes I remember the mint toffo's too, and the noise the sweeties made in their little boxes with the punched out thumb bit where they fell out..

Hey talking of that, do you remember the PEZ sweets? they used to have popeye at the top you'd lift his head and a brick like candy sweet used to come out...

Florence 27-Oct-2006 15:51

Rod 27-Oct-2006 15:58

Liquorice Mad Me!!

I spent the last ten years in the search for the elusive "Bassetti" liquorice sticks, the ones that are flattend at one end. Imagine my surprise when I found some in a local traditional sweet shop. I liked them so much I ordered a box of 100 for £9.00 !! Lasted me three months, so I have another awaiting collection. Space Dust also a favourite of mine and "Curly Wurlys".

final_edition 27-Oct-2006 16:12

What was your favorite sweets from a jar?
Mine were Pips also Army And Navy. We either had to go half each for a quarter bag or have an eigth bag if I was on my own. They seemed so expensive when I was a kid.
Partial to a bag of Lemon Bon-bons too:)
