After market or alternative ignition system Just been playing with my class B Ducati monster, I believe the engine is around 1998 as it has the rounded toothed timing belt. It ran initially on two cylinders and then wouldn't start. A replacement BB1105 CDI ignition unit solved the problem and it's now running sweetly again ready for Brands. I have looked at replacing the spare I used but they are quite pricey. My question is :- is there an alternative/after market system that would be better to fit and more cost effective in the long run. Perhaps a power commander or something similar. Has anyone done something similar which is within the rules and could you enlighten me on what I need and how hard it it to do? Thanks in advance, Lee |
An Ignitech unit is the way to go. Programmable ( I have an ignition map for a 583) It can run an electronic Tacho You can set a rev limiter and I think it can even drive a shift light |
Hi Kev, Thanks for the reply, do I just Google "Ignitech" or can you advise me on the model and who sell them? Cheers Lee |

Sorry for my ignorance, are the items you are selling the type I already have fitted to my bike or a Ignitech? Though I am interested either way. |

The Ignitech for a Class B bike is the TCIP4, last time I looked You can get them for around £160 new, again last time I looked. They come with a harness to suit the bike they are bought for so if you buy a Ducati one it will plug straight in in place of the Igniter boxes Attached are a few Screen Shots I have taken in the past Andy's setup for £100 is a good deal for two OEM Igniters and 2 coils |
Can't disagree with Kev. Ignitech are ok, but you did need to be technically savvy in setting them up. I looked at the system quite closely for my TT2 Pantah (pretty much an early 600ss) and read one of Brad Black's (Brad Bike Boy) excellent articles, where he covers fitting and using the Ignitech. I ended up going with a complete Silent Hektik Powerblock system, modifying the 600ss one to fit an earlier Pantah. This system comes with a lightweight rotor; single pickup/trigger; coils; leads; ignition box. It has 16 selectable pre determined ignition curves and is very well made. About £350 at current exchange rates, but you're getting everything! I guess my point is, that you may end up replacing the boxes, then the coils, then the pickups, etc, in which case the SH system pans out pretty well. Only thing is, I'm not sure that the rules allow you to fit the lighter rotor? |

THEY DON'T |
Thanks for all of the advice so far (Kev, SeeleyG50 and for the offer of parts from Banger San) I look forward to meeting you and the rest of the club at Brands). I contacted Ignitech and as far as I can tell the programmable TCIP4, connector adapter, USB/COM adaptor, CD rom etc and P&P is €174, approx (£126.67) depending on exchange rates. If I go this way Kev can I get a copy of you 583 ignition map? I will hopefully be able to talk to you all at Brands to find a solution or whether to stick with the original type components or more modern versions. I'll be in the converted ambulance with a fluorescent yellow bonnet, so feel free to drop by for a coffee/beer. Thanks again |
If it's running ok the biggest factor is the stupid pink thing sat on the seat. Is this your first year racing? Hope you won't be one of those namby pamby garage dwelling types, Most of us will be in the bottom paddock with a tin in our hand anyway. |
Yes its my first year, never thought of myself as a namby pamby type and would rather be under canvas than a garage. And how do you know my leathers are pink? |

Yep no problem with letting you have a copy, it has a tiny file size so easy to email Pete Pritchard has a Ignitech on his Class B bike, which is Paul Nelson's old bike and has been running trouble free for some years now, I suspect he'll be at Brands as it's his closest track |

Well you've picked a brill place to start, just keep your doors locked if Blomfield is lurking nearby. |
I have tried to look for Brad Blacks article on ignitech recommend by Seeley50, can any one help locating it. |

I'm selling what you already have fitted however I did a back to back with the Ignitec on the dyno vs. the original set up and it made no difference power wise so you would be paying for reliability. The reason I still have a spare set is after 3 years of racing in class B I never had either the coil or igniter box fail so you could argue these are as reliable. Always thought it would be handy to have a spare set I could swap over in one go, these got Mark H out of trouble at Brands in 5 minutes. |

Mark must have had reliability issues, probably something that didn't plague Tom when he owned the bike It is swings and roundabouts plus luck of the draw There are always a few Options Run without spares and hope for the best Buy a spare set up cost circa £100 and be covered Buy Ignitech, possibly sell original igniters to get some of the outlay back |
Thanks for the offer of spares, but since making the post I have made the plunge and brought an Ignitech as a back up which arrived today, this will give me a back up for Brands. |
