748 dilema

Hmm, only about 2 months after getting the 600 monster I find I am wavering again!

As I mentioned in another thread I emailed a local dealer (non Ducati) who had a 748 and firstly just asked did they want to buy my Fazer and cheekily then did they want to swap my 2 for their one.

They came back and said my 2 plus £600. That is now down to £400.

The 748 is a 2000/W, 10k miles but no documented services since 2003 at 6k miles. Its up for £4k which may be slightly too high bearing in mind the lack of SH.

My 2 are a 2001 600 Fazer which I bought a year ago for £2300, am trying to sell at £2195. Another dealer this morning offered £1300 for it!

The Monster 600 is a 2000/W with 16k miles. Bought it for £1600 from Chris P on here.

So I would effectively be getting £1600 for the Monster and £2k for the Fazer.

Should the lack of history on the 748 be putting me off? It is at the moment. It also needed a bit of a tidy up although to be honest they had only just got it and not prepped it yet.

Advice required!!!

Get it bought.

keefer 08-Nov-2006 13:16

do it
and get a fast bike

TP 08-Nov-2006 13:33

As much as I want to see you on a 748 Paul, I'd let them have a look at the bike first. Have a look yourself actually too.

I'd be keen if it checks out ok, no good deal is worth buying a lemon.

TP 08-Nov-2006 13:34

Sorry, I don't know what came over me ... what I meant to say was:

BUY THE BLOODY THING!

Did the drugs stop working for a moment?

Wife is not keen. I am getting the 'You have not ridden the Monster much yet' and 'Do you remember how wet you were riding it back' etc etc.

And the worst one 'Just do what you want'. Reminds me of that ebay ad where 'Do what ever you want does not mean buying a fireblade (or whatever it was)'

I had a relapse, or is that a prolapse...

Ahh, well .. you risk her wrath then! Just do you what you want means "I'm not going to argue with you anymore, but if you buy that goddamn bike I'll have your nuts in a jar"

Which can be loosely interpreted based on cultural differences etc etc.

It's almost as bad as when you say, "Is everything ok babe?" and she responds with "Fine!"

RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ozz 08-Nov-2006 14:01

Excatly, light fuse and stand well back!

My problem with the wife is that she is not a normal woman - she rarely spends any money hence why I have problems cos I do!

Paul, you're on your own.

But if you buy the 748, I'd speak to the police and get a heads up on obtaining a domestic violence order!

keefer 08-Nov-2006 14:06

don't tell her
she's a woman and wont notice the difference any way

weeksyracing 08-Nov-2006 14:11

Don't buy the 748, you can buy a reliable and fast bike for £3000 EASILY.

TP 08-Nov-2006 14:11

I forgot to say, I have an airbed you can sleep on Paul :D:D:D

Actually I have just changed car to a Citroen Picasso and the back seats are removable so should be able to sleep in there. Could be useful for Brands next year....

LOL REALLY ???? LOL..

they give plenty of smiles... although i accept they are not as pretty.

ducati riders are living the misguided dream that people want to be them because they think they have the 'Ferarri' of Motorcycles....

What they actually have with a 748 is a Fiat Punto.

chicken 08-Nov-2006 14:41

Paul, why not have a look at this one? You'd have cash left over, which would please the missus.

http://www.ducatisportingclub.com/sh...ad.php?t=37975

Steve, you're going to need a bigger spoon to stir things up with. Your arguments are getting tired...

Ozz 08-Nov-2006 14:49

Chi, to be honest I would want a standard one as I am a slow rider now you know!

weeksyracing 08-Nov-2006 14:54

The ridiculous part is that some seem to think i'm on a wind up ?

Ask any of the lads who've gone to Japanese from the board (i mean 1000cc and fairly new) if they would go back to Ducati 748bp ? i'll be amazed if you get many saying yes..... If ANY.

keefer 08-Nov-2006 14:56

he has a 600SS
so what's your point in this thread

he's got a Monster... and wants a faster/better bike.

the 748 isn't really either of them. It's as fast as a 1999 Jap 600, and as relaible as a 1948 Hillman Imp. (ok that's sort of a joke)

IT amazes me at times how blinkered to trying something else Ducati riders are. I was a true advocate of Ducati's and still have a pristine 748s in my shed, however there comes a time when you realise, they are really not that great.

I'm all for Brand Loyalty, but you have to be realistic with it. ?

keefer 08-Nov-2006 15:04

well that's where we disagree
a 748 is not faster than a 600SS ?
reliable. in my opinion it will be as reliable as any second hand jap bike for £3000

But we all know that it's how you ride it that matters ...

I seem to recall a certain person being given lessons on this while riding their R1 round Cadwell by some other certain 600SS riding persons...

i agree 100%, however has little to do with the discussion.

they are racers on race bikes, i was a trackdayer on my shiney road bike i had to ride home on Sunday.

Beanie, believe it or not.... by recommending he buys something from the East, is being helpful.

I'm still the exact same person i was, just my opinions on certain subjects has changed.

how exactly is having a different thought to some others being **** stiring ? some don't liike the 999, some hate the Multistrda, are they all doing the same by commenting on it ?

Ozz 08-Nov-2006 15:14

Just to stir things further, Moto Rapido have a 2001 748 in yellow with FSH etc and only 7900 miles down from £4995 to £3990!

Beth they wouldn't give me a px on a Fazer though!

Oooh!

Weeksy, Paul wants a 748 ... as you are so fond of saying, end of.

sorry, i thought he said "what do you think guys"

Hmmmmm

skidlids 08-Nov-2006 15:24

Nothing wrong with a 748 on the way up, the are a very good bike with the styling and handling of their bigger relatives. There are many a happy 748 owner around, but once they progress further up the biking ladder I can't see many returning to the 748 especially with 916s available for less than £3k.

But going to something like a R1 is a waste of time for most as the majority can't ride them to the bikes full potential, not even the international licence holders at the TT.

Currently Ozz is on a bike that would have been in the Formula 3 class, the 748 like the Jap 600s would be F2 and the 998/999 and Jap 1000s woyuld be F1, best thing is to progress through the ranks. rather than trying to leap to the top of the pile.

My bikes while growing up went, 125, 250, 350, 400, 750, 1100

lets be honest Skids.... no-one on here can ride ANY of their bikes to the full potential or even 90%.... but it's all about fun :)

keefer 08-Nov-2006 15:28

agreed skids I have seen many people jump on big bikes because they think that's what they need to be quick. Then they just cant handle them.
you wont learn more about cornering than riding a 125 250 before progressing

skidlids 08-Nov-2006 15:29

Quite right it is about fun and after a Fazer and a Monster 600 I'm sure Ozz would find a 748 lots of Fun

keefer 08-Nov-2006 15:31

and.....

if you can stretch the cash ...then i suggest go for a 748R............it is by far the best of the 748 models...!

And was there not one on here for only about £4.5k recently? Did it sell?

chicken 08-Nov-2006 16:08

Steve,
I’m not saying you are on a wind-up – I do believe that you believe that a big-CC Japanese bike is better than a Ducati. You’re entitled to your opinion but the price that you pay for that privilege is that others are allowed their opinion also. And on a Ducati site, you shouldn’t expect to be in the majority.

You’ve said above that “no-one here can ride any of their bikes to the full potential or even 90%.... but it’s all about fun”. So are you saying that everyone is going to have more fun on a Japanese bike than on a 748? I can’t believe that is true because there ARE people that choose to ride a 748 over a big Japanese bike, precisely because market forces set a higher price on the 748.

Gaz 748 08-Nov-2006 16:28

Ozz, go for it, you wont get so wet on a 748. :D

There a great bike I have been riding them for seven years with no big problems. You might need a new clutch around 15,000 miles and theres always the rocker problem, only had one replaced tho. Great engine, ride the torque or rev the nuts off it. :D :D

Albie 08-Nov-2006 19:06

Buy it. I just got 748. Prefer riding it than monster s4. Not as grunty as 916 but hell of a hoot and looks gorgeous and corners on rails.
