Gearing for 996R / 998S / 998R? ...with my old 996Bip and 996SPS, I changed the gearing from standard, by either putting a 14th on the front or 38 on the back. With the more powerful 996R / 998S or 998R, are these happier with the standard gearing or are you still regearing to get the best from these? Ta Tim |
Rattler careful ..??? Weeksy get real ....... I think you should just smash it up with a hammer, kick it round the garage and then drag it along behind the car for a few hundred yards .... It'll at least save you the cost of the track day for acheiving the same result ..??? |

im on a 999s with 14-38 and it works a dream. the only difference being that the 998 uses a short travel throttle assy. if your using the bike on the track then go for it as who needs that high top end other than on the autobahn |
Rattler - the Testastretta engines are more powerfull indeed and are happier revving and have lost a bit of that all out grunt of the SPS long stroke engine. So logically thinking you should indeed lower the gearing to make the most of that engine even more so on the Testastretta than any SPS and BPs that you might have changed before. The impact on top speed down the straights shouldn't be as critical either because the engine revs better. Please make sure you advertise your first day out on the bike. I don't want to miss that!! :lol::lol::lol: |

Tim I've done quite a bit of experimentation with this on my 998S race bike. I currently run a 14/39 combination and despite the comments made above, it's still eminently rideable, but obviously lifts the front in second. On standard gearing, the bike just wasn't fast enough out of corners. 14/39 is good because (with a new chain, anyway), it's the largest combination you can get with a 96-link chain. Above that, you need to go to 98-links, which is too-long for 14/39, so you end up being unable to back-track. I should point out also that when I say "largest", I am referring to keeping the eccentric in a reasonable position. I suspect that now my chain has begun to stretch a bit, that a 40T rear may be possible too. I actually used to race my Mille-R with a 15/46 combination and a guy I race against uses a 15/48. I'm not sure how everyone here thinks a low-geared combination is something uncontrollable - look at 1000cc Production Club racing and you'll regularly see tuned GSX-R1000's running lower gearing than this. 14/39 Tim - JFDI! On my 998R tried 14/38, too rev'y. Back to 15/38 now with a "sensible" top speed of around 175. maybe! The original 15/37 was a bit too long Lapman |
Dean whats your rev limit on the 998R, gearing is something I will be sorting out before to long, but my motor is only a 998Bp so I will have to check what the standard gearing and rev ceiling are and work from there. Kev |
Kev, Occording the the manual its should be 10,000. On the SPA dash tell-tale its something like 11,250 on the limiter. |
Cheers Dean, if its 10k rev limit, i'll gear it for about 16mph per thou revs, cant see me needing any more than that, especially on the type of roads I like to ride, suspect standard gearing is 18 to 19 mph, I'll find out in time. |
how to order online? Hi everyone, does anyone know of a web site I can order these on line? I wanted to try the 14T front and 38T back but my dealer told that the response from the local importer was:"we have a 2 month wait of new orders" !! for a couple of sprokets??? come on!!!
