It's called Italian attention to detail.
I mean if they can't get the show/press bike perfect, what chance of a customers bike being spot on?

it's character !!

I mean have you ever seen the welding on the front edge of a 749R tank ! that's definately the Italian personal touch

ziggi 14-Nov-2006 20:27

Sharpy - you're coming around aren't you. You're going through the curve of denial to acceptance.

Those latest photos are fantastic. And that's just the base model.

I don't mind it.....I like all Duke's

still feel its a bit of a compramise tho'

just been out to look at my R in the garage, still doing it for me !

maybe I'll have one of each

ziggi 14-Nov-2006 20:42

I think the 749R was the best looking 749/999 and the only one I would want to own 04 model carbon.

With the 1098, i'm already interested with the base model. You wait til we see a full WSBK model on the grid.

wato39 14-Nov-2006 20:45

It is growing on me but i do think this new model should have been the design that replaced the 748/998 three or so years ago (sorry 999 owners) and then the designers could have really gone to town with the evolution of the 748/998 replacement now .

ziggi 14-Nov-2006 20:49

I know bikes are different things to different people but i truely beleive that the MV F4 was the real design upgrade to the 916 by Tamburini

To be fair, if you squint this is the best shot I have seen so far of the 1098, it looks the most like a Ducati to me !

When the 916 came out , did it take time for it to grow on you, or did you just say "F*** me, I really want one of those" ?

Seriously...

You know your bike.......Thats a girls bike, that is!

I bet when everyone asks why you didnt get a 999R, you spout out the same well rehersed excuses as the Boxter owner , when asked why he didnt get a 911...

(and before anyone jumps to his defence, he`s having a go at a bike thats not even in the shops yet and as a 999 owner, hes feeling gutted because he backed a lame horse)

erm.......actually preferred the 749R to the 999R, bit more road friendly and exclusive
strangely enuff, I prefer the 911 to the Boxter
(can't fit a towbar to a Boxter)

thanks...& ditto

Ian_km 15-Nov-2006 10:48

Well, it's growing on me I have to say. But I'm sticking with my 996SPS and let you lot test and develop it for a while, could be tempted by an R somewhere down the road!

TP 15-Nov-2006 11:13

When I first saw the 916 I thought it was absolutely gorgeous and said I'd own one, one day.

The 1098 is gorgeous, and I'd quite like to have one. But it hasn't quite captured my imagination the same way the 916 did. That's not down to the 1098, I love it and would love to have one, it's down to the fact that the 916 was way ahead of it's time and all the reasons that make it the icon it is.

:)

I get ya !

gimpboy450 15-Nov-2006 13:25

Hi all, my opinion is that its okay, just okay i currently own a Ducati but if i were to spend circa 14K then it would have to be the MV F1000R as its less popular/better looking/better marque/higher spec/lower servicing costs. Not only that its the ferraris of bikes so hands done MV winner, maybe ducati should realise this and up the spec and lower prices.

I dont think its better looking, I think the MV looks like its got a little middle age spread, it looks a little over weight...and its less popular for a reason, ie: you cant get anyone to service the thing and if you can, you wait months for parts...Bit like Bellini, soon you`ll be spouting off about Bimota`s being "exotic"... Move on....Dont fear the future

Hhhhhmmmm I know what one I`ll have...

Dave G 15-Nov-2006 14:40

I think the 1098 is a real missed opportunity. Its nice enough I suppose, but you know companies are struggling when they try and backtrack their designs because of public criticism rather than create new designs.
It was a brave move by Ducati to replace the 916 with something that was radically different, and it seems the main reason it was not well received was that it wasn't the 916.Ducati were in a no win situation and would have been lambasted for resting on their laurels by keeping the 916 shape and were lambasted for replacing it.
The 999 isn't perfect but its unique and has got some great ideas about it,it would have been a better, braver thing to do to develop this idea rather than an italian fireblade/R1 clone.
I hope the 1098 is a success for Ducati, but what'll happen if it isnt?,will they release a 'classic' 916 range. Its an admission of defeat designwise, where does it go from here?

I think Ducati will sell a few 1098`s and clean up in WSB/BSB and maybe AMA!!! when they start racing it, then all the Jap factories will start shouting about the extra 100-200cc`s.
