The Ashes - Who will win the first test in Brisbane?

It's about to kick off, what would have to be the most eagerly anticipated Ashes series since ... the last one! :D

I'm keen to make some money back that I lost in the last series and would dearly love to Ricky Ponting holding the small urn aloft! Come on Punter!

Who do you reckon will win and why?

Don't forget to vote in the poll! Who is going to win the first test?

Of course I think Australia will win :D I don't think Eng are the settled team in form that they were at the start of the last series. Too many injuries to key players and a run of poor form. On the other side, Aus have dominated every test series they've played in since and have just won the ICC champions trophy so confidence is high. Not to mention the fact that they are stinging still over losing the series last time. With Warne coming back into the fold and looking to take his 700th test wicket in the series I'm really looking forward to it.

What are the chances that if Freddie wins the toss Eng will have a bat?!

Sadly I reckon Aus will come out on top, you never know though!
Did you hear that the Barmy Army has worked out it can get tickets to games by joining the Aus Cricket Association as Australia supporters? :)

well If you put up my suggested option you would have at least 2 votes;)

Sadly I can't see England repeating the heroics of last summer.. I suspect it might be a bit of a one-sided series :(

Frankly - Ive got more interest in what coloured under pants I'm going to put on this morning..!!!

Seriously - ive never understood what the attraction was with cricket - until my mate (who also hasnt got a clue about cricket either) went to a test match with a customer and said it was one of the best laughs/pi55 ups he'd ever had !!!!

Deffo on my list of things to do next year - then maybe i'll understand what all the fuss is about..!

Mind you - I did play rounders at school - does that count TP..??!!!

I kind of don't want to see that happen to be honest.

Part of me wants the Aussies to win every test on the 3rd day! But the other part wants a good contest, some compelling cricket! If we win I don't think it will be that easy to be honest, there's some world class players in the England side.

Coverage starts tonight: Sky Sports 1 @ 10:30pm

Come on Aussie!

RD 22-Nov-2006 17:03

I hope England win but very much doubt it. I think Australia will win and voted accordingly.

I don't know why I voted, I hate cricket anyway, rugby is a different matter. :smug:

TP 22-Nov-2006 23:21

Ricky Ponting has won the first contest, the coin toss! Australia are having a bat :D

TP 22-Nov-2006 23:44

Beautiful sunny day at the Gabba, I've watched the cricket there before! It's a two beer walk from there to the house I still own in Coorparoo :D

About three wee's though ...

The players are taking the field, I'm all excited ... I've been waiting since the Donington round of DD last year when we finally lost the series to you bastids!

Matty Hayden and Justin Langer are walking out ready to do Australia proud - come on boys!

TP 22-Nov-2006 23:47

The first ball is taken at second slip! Harmison with a HUGE wide!

Next one WAY down leg side .. bit of nerves maybe

TP 22-Nov-2006 23:51

Only 9 off the first over! To be fair one of the 4's was a streaky edge through the slip cordon.

Sheesh, Harmy needs to get the nerves under control!

TP 23-Nov-2006 00:09

Langer currently 23 off 16 balls.

:o

Hayden is normally the one who goes banana's, he's 7 off 14 balls!

TP 23-Nov-2006 00:12

oooh!

Unlucky not to get Hayden out there, an edge past gully at a catchable height.

Don't worry, the commentary will stop soon :D

Yeah, it soon stopped didn't it!!!!!!

Must be too busy marking down the flaming Aussie runs

Ever heard the phrase "Lulling them into a false sense of security"?

Well you've certainly achieved that! Early days yet mate, there's still 4 days of this test match to go.

Also, we won the first test of the ashes last time quite convincingly and didn't win the urn ... patience ;)

TP 26-Nov-2006 00:18

Punter sets England 648 to win.

What are the odds?

Well, I believe that it was 1/250 for Australia to win, and 150/1 for England to win.

This morning that was I think.

:(

TP 26-Nov-2006 00:44

I edited my post, it was 648 to win, not 646 ... not that it makes a huuuuuuge difference

Those odds don't look good do they!

Nup! :D

To be fair to them though, they've handed a bit back in recent years in a few sports. Taking the ashes back off us after we held it for 18 years, winning the rugby world cup against us in Sydney ... This ashes series and the rugby world cup next year will be testing times for England methinks. Their rugby side is in disarray and their coach should have been sacked last year - he's rubbish.

Derek, do you like rugby? :D

A good win by the Aussies :)

Not counting our chickens just yet, there's 4 tests to go and we won the first test in the last series so roll on Friday - the second test in Adelaide.
