First Road Knee Down, When,Where and what Bike?

Mine was 1998, Yamaha Thundercat, out in deepest darkest surrey somewhere, near Boxhill...

Mate who owned a Blade took me out to this most perfect of roundabouts and thats where the cherry was popped...

Ahhhh!!! You never forget the first time..:D

skidlids 05-Dec-2006 15:00

never done it on the road
so Never, nowhere and no bike

Monty 05-Dec-2006 15:03

I have never got my knee down on the road Van-never really tried either-on the track is a different matter. I could never get my knee down on my old 900SS, the 996 was easy peasy, the ST4S you have to try quite hard, the TZ was just a case of going faster and faster until you were on the other side of ridiculous and then the knee goes down-massive corner speed by then too.

On a roundabout near my local Tescos. Didn't realise I was doing it at the time (oops!), I just noticed the scuffs on my slider afterwards. On my 999S. It was in, um, 2003. Doesn't happen for me very often on the road.

Off my 250 Superdream in 1979...........unintentionally:o

unfortunately, then my elbow, my ass & then shoulder followed & the bike was a write off:ninja:

TP 05-Dec-2006 15:55

Never had my knee down on the road, hardly even on track either for that matter.

Jools 05-Dec-2006 15:59

On my ST2 at what I think they call 'Netty's Nook' corner at Rockingham's National circuit (it's the tight right hander at the back of the circuit, just after you come round a very fast and bumpy right hand sweeper, along a short straight then into said corner and up the hill towards the Marshall's hut).

Knee dabbed down on the kerbing at the apex. I was so surprised that it was a case of "what the feck..." and I promptly sat the bike up again before I realised what it was.

It was such a grin afterwards that I tried it again the next lap and managed to get my knee down again...only this time followed by my ass, my elbow etc...

Only get the occasional snick of slider on the road, once or twice a year...can't drag my knee all the way through like some folks

yorkie 05-Dec-2006 16:10

First time was on a private trackday, and then on the way home at every corner possible!!

And now almost every day i take the little Monster out! Doing it on the road is fun!

Corners and roundabouts, even managed to grind the sliders in the wet (I didnt mean too, but it saved me binning it!!)

Showboating on track days is the best! With a 600 monster im not really out for lap records!

Yorkie.

Dementor 05-Dec-2006 16:38

Both knees on a local roudabout on the 916, trouble is it was both knees at the same time

keefer 05-Dec-2006 16:49

on the 748SP
on a road not to far from home
two roundabouts connected by a nice bit of link road
its like a little brands hatch ( apart from the odd car waiting to get on)
do it there most summers just to get in the grove

Did you get your knee down on the V Rod?

Now THAT would be impressive!

MARTIN H 05-Dec-2006 17:11

Mid 90s on a Blade, roundabout under junction 11 of the M65. Went round and round until I was dizzy/knee touched down. Slider wasnt in the correct position though and after another 10 or so laps I wore through the knee on my Nankai Doohan leathers. Found it very easy to do after that but probably only do it once or twice a year on the road nowadays.

domski 05-Dec-2006 17:21

Bought a Dainese race suit the day before going to the 1995 TT with the intention to get my knee down... but failed miserably.

Got home, unloaded my RD350 YPVS from the van (we took it in the van as I actually wanted to get to the island!) and went striaght down to my local roundabout and got my knee down within about 2 laps! Result.

Spent the next 3 years destroying knee sliders before plowing into a Volvo and going racing!

Now I never get my knee down - go figure!

You know what!!! That gives me an idea...:D

Its low enough, the pegs grind out very easy, If we get a good day soon, I`m gonna give it a go, video and youtube it.....

Leathered up on a V Rod listening to the Village people`s Macho man...

Could it get any better???

Looking at the size of the padding on youe DD bike, I'm not surprised. Its a wonder you can get you feet down :-)

True, although with slicks on I was very almostly dragging the pegs in Jerez, and couldn't help but get my knee down everywhere!! :o

Sadly have to use Diablo road tyres next season, and my 'style' don't work with knee down antics.

I wub slicks though :D  :D

Monty 05-Dec-2006 18:22

"I wub slicks though" bloody aweful things when they are cold though-if you haven't got warmers. Crashed the TZ at Coppice Donington about 3 years ago because they didn't have the power on in the garages-2nd lap warming the tyres-no warning-sack of spuds. They got the dam power on quick enough after that..............

02-748-The famous Chobham roundabout.

If you want a good left-hand bend head to the Southern Ind. Area in Bracknell,360 bend, smooth, poss. camber and quiet at the weekend. :D :D

RD 05-Dec-2006 18:40

My first time was during the late 1980's while riding dad's 1941 Harley-Davidson WLC750 (3-speed hand gear change and foot operated clutch ) behind me was dad and my mates in his 1943 Dodge 6x6 Personnel & Cargo Carrier, when we came to a mini-roundabout in Liphook (A3) I made a mistake, I should have rode straight through but I started to turn slowly (10mph) onto the mini-roundabout, dad tooted and indicated the correct direction so while still negotiating the roundabout I decided to go full circle and take the correct road (A3 London) at was at this stage a 17 year old decided to enter the roundabout driving a Metro. Already cranked over I tried to take avoiding action and pulled the front brake, not a good thing to normally but on an old Harley I found out to my horror it doesn't matter as the front brake (cable operated drum) doesn't work!! Apparently this is a common problem on these Harleys and bikes of this age, that is why riders wore boots with platform soles. ;) I also used the rear brake but this didn’t slow the bike enough either so the inevitable crunch happened and unintentionally I managed to get my right knee down for the time, in fact the whole of my right leg. Minimal damage to me, bike and car. Needless to say that dad wasn’t a happy chappy.

know that one well up by the tank factory - it also had the nice 'test link road' from the other roundabout on the Sunningdale road;) with no crossing traffic etc:D
Was great to spin from one roundabout doing the half mile with a twist in the middle, to the other - untill the council 'fiddled' with the road in the middle bit:mad:

But then again, the road was never the same on the bigger bikes, as it was on the 125'5 & 250's in the old days:D

Same here. Eltham High Street, 250K4 in 1980.
Front wheel hit a wet manhole cover, knee, elbow, wrist. ouch.

Ains.

Gaz 748 05-Dec-2006 19:49

It`s a bit of a mess now, bollards on the roundabout opposite where people used to stand. :(

jfp,,,,,behave ureself !!!!!,i get told at every track day,by another certain dsc members there, that he taught you how to do it,and you didn't even, know him in 1972 !!!!,isn't that right jon ???????

itexuk 05-Dec-2006 20:25

Most Friday nights after the pub:D :D

monstermob 998 05-Dec-2006 20:31

on one of these around 1979 --quite regularly grind the footpegs down to stumps and and a new pair of Doc martins every month- me mum use to add patches on me bellstaff trousers to save me knees- i think this may have been in the days before knee sliders were invented- i think skidlids had one of these as well, he may confirm just how far you could get them over:lol: mind you the suspension is as soft as soggy loo paper so probably lowered the ride hight to a minimum of zilch

by the way, this one now lives in me loft;)

Mr C 05-Dec-2006 20:32

Never done it on Road or Track

pedro 05-Dec-2006 20:37

r1 melbourne loop, the corner has had both yeti & jon off,i love it.

Nigel C 05-Dec-2006 21:19

On the road a couple of years ago on my 748 there are two small roundabouts either side of the A27 joined by a bridge so just a couple of 'laps' to warm the sides of the tyres and away you go .
On the track all the time when i was club racing wish i'd kept the knee sliders :).
could get the pegs and my knee down at the same time round Riches corner at snetterton , corners were easy but both times i raced there it holed a piston on the straights !!

rcgbob44 05-Dec-2006 22:37

Nope, never done it

bradders 05-Dec-2006 22:47

you're all just showing off....coz I cant do it!!

Griff 64 06-Dec-2006 00:56

900SS May 2005 at my local roundabout,500 yards from my house.Palm Court roundabout for anyone local.Shaped like a kidney. The north end exit A6 for Matlock is the ideal spot with good visibility and a choice of turn in points.

Had to do it really as i was of to France the next day and i couldn,t bear to go with 8 other riders and being the only one who hadn,t done it. Turned out 5 of them were coppers,2 bike cops and they never budged there arses a inch. They really couldn,t understand why i kept going round and round every roundabout grinding away.

like to touch down a few times every road ride more as a confidence thing than anything else.My local quick fix route has a few corners that i know well as well as roundabouts that get a scraping but its more showing of than speed and it feels good so why not.

On track and racing in DD it is essential ideally at every corner.HAnging of makes the bike feel better and more stable and as soon as your knee is down you no there is not much more lean angle to play with. Its then a queston of lifting your knee up a bit.Brilliant feeling and should be eperienced byeveryone who rides. Fastest spot in the uk would be the left hand part of Craner curves i guess. About 115mph on a DD bike!

Body posistion is the key followed by a fast hard turn in. Get that sucker over!

On the Mcdonalds roundabout in Petersfield as you join the A272,on my GSXR1000 this year but watch out for the diesel that seems permanently left on the surface.

Loz 06-Dec-2006 17:26

That used to be a really, really nice roundabout, but the surface no longer inspires a lot of trust. I used to deck out the XJ900 there quite often.
