DSC message board etiquette PLEASE READ As it happens today (6th March) we had a Management Team meeting and the subject of the attitude and content of some of our message board members was discussed. Paul (pyschlist) you make some very valid points in your message on the “men and motors” thread and I did quote the gist of it to the MT. This message board is paid for by the membership of this club and as such the membership through the MT have the say on how it is run. We value this message board as a tool for existing members and as a way of attracting new members to the club. It is also a tremendous asset to us as a feel for what and how we are to the likes of Ducati UK and Ducati Italy. To allow the tone of a few to put off perhaps many is not acceptable, and will not be tolerated. We will now delete without discussion if the type of abuse and lack of respect for others continues. Differing opinions are fine as long as respect is shown for the other person or persons. We as a club need to be welcoming to newbies and do acknowledge that the tone of some other websites message boards may be different from ours, but when in our house please follow our etiquette. We are planning some changes to this site now to get the speed issue sorted and then to change the workings of the entire site; we are investing time and money into this and do not want spend time over negative rubbish. |
very well said !!!! |
yep more about dukes less about ego |

BDG has just come up with a wonderfull idea for charrity Take a look at how many have pledged support (the same old names) in other words the good guys who are here to help and support the cause It's becoming a Champaign taste Lemonade Pocket (club) The ones that have against the ones that want!!! so i'm personaly off !! and anyone who seriously wants to do events around the midlands meet up 4 a beer take the **** have a laugh (RIDE THEIR BIKES) then get intouch because i'm up for it !! my number is in some other threads if you want it !! see you guys around !!!! mav, read the reply on the men and motors thread. Aas i said there, you are not seeing the bigger picture here. |
Oh dear i've been trying to avoid getting involved with these posts but Mav I think your wrong, this is not an elitist board all the people i have met from this club (and there are lots) all the most down to earth people you would like to meet okay some may be there are "ones that have and ones that want" but the fact that they do "have" doesn't make them any different as people . And unfortunately some are being driven away by recent events. I take it by the statement (RIDE THEIR BIKES) your saying we don't???? or are you miffed we couldn't get enough people together for your ring trip ? I would have loved to do it but i couldn't afford it and i'm sorry it didn't work out. I'll be at the sussex and surrey meets when i can get to them but as for posting on the board i think i'll give it a miss for a while . Cheers [Edited on 6-3-2004 by Nigel C] |
nigel, likewise, see you at findon next time.... |
Like you say Nigel, I too have tried to avoid taking too much notice of some of the hypocritical postings I've seen recently but this last "series" really does take the biscuit. I'd like to say I will avoid reading posts like it in the future, but how can I tell what they're gonna be like? When I first came to this board (not that long ago) I'd been told that it was very "clicquey" but very soon found that NOT to be the case, if you come on board with a NARROW mind then, yes, you could easily misread it that way, so being a broad minded person I feel i fitted straight in, and have really enjoyed it. Until recently. I've spoken to a few Ducati owners in the past couple of weeks (s'what happens when you hang around Ducati main dealers when you're not allowed to ride yer bike!) and on more than one occasion I've been told they've heard of us but wont be "joining" because the views they've seen expressed on the board are either too inflammatory, too extreme, or simply too vulgar and they simply not interested in that kind of talk/attitude! Now whether you believe that view or not it's the kind of "turn off" that could possibly see the end of this club as a force in this country for quite some time and I, for one, wouldn't want someone signing onto the DSC message board and using it to spout abuse at ANYONE! Everybody's different and we are all entitled to our own opinions but most of us have enough common sense not to scream them abusively from the rooftops, please be aware of the image you are creating of OUR club (and all the clubs members) and express them politely. See y'all at Findon this summer whether you're on a Duke, a Hog, a Jap bike or just a car, so long as you like to talk bikes you're all welcome, just dont waste yer time if all you want to do is **** people off. Ride safe and be excellent to each other! |
Les than two years ago I'd never heard of DSC. Then I decided to move away from a long line of Japanese bikes and try something different. Looked around the web and found this site, asked a few questions and before I knew it I'd bought a Ducati. That's the power of this website and this club. If I'd seen the sort of stuff that Vman, Jewell and DJT have been putting up recently would I have joined and bought the Ducati? - no I wouldn't. So madmav, that's why what is put on this site is important because it helps folk find a truly excellent biking experience and truly great people. And that's why I will personally remove any bigotry, bad language or disrespectful posting I see on this board from now on. |
Yup agree! Lets keep it to the point, with lots of humour, and stop the bitching etc etc etc. This club is a good club full of knowlege that is accessible to all and not a bad bunch of people either. Now no more of this yellow nonsense ok:D |
Henners just to add in fairness to DJ and Jewell their postings were not meant to cause harm or offence, more a youthful spirit and perhaps a younger outlook on life that a few of us old ???? did not understand.:) Ian |
Webteam, could I beg to suggest that you delete the main thread concerned, and also judiciously prune this one, to restore the forum to its 'usual equilibrium'. Many thanks, CK |
just to Respond Nige c I am not at all miffed about the ring Trip more bemused That only two people took the timeout to ring me and explain the timing of the trip made it akward for them /or they were struggling with the cost ! MY offer is open to all at the Dsc and as i am a member , i will still offer discount for DSC members any time they wish to go!! (some have already booked via u2us or email ) so i am NOT MIFFED as you put it! nigel its easy for people to pick holes in Threads and read what they want into them! My comments about not giving a toss about what the FACTORY thinks is mearly a statetment as i dont think the factory are gonna lend me a spanner if my bike breaks or ring me and tell me A well needed set of directions to a DUCATI meet in manchester !! (for example) (RIDING THEIR BIKES ) means stop bitching at one another and get on with it (BIKING) and also WEBTEAM i posted 3 times to make MY POINT !!!!! your comment about slowing the board down was below the belt!! V.mans trash must have made the board stop!!! OK if anyone doubts my integity to the DSC Please speak to michael j who lives 100miles away and ask him what i was doing outside his house at 6oclock on a saturday morning !!!! anyway if you realy think i'm going off the board for the sake of a tossa you are mistaken !!! for the ones that dont like what i put there are many more THAT DO !! regards mav:cool: |
mav, no don't take my comment about the board speed in any seriousness. I know exactly what is causing that problem and it is not you. We will be paying more money for better service soon. Now sort it out, put ya dummy back in, get the toys back in the pram I am doing the same as we speak now. You are of value to the club don't go, you were as shocked as any of us with the twits comments that started all of this, as you said he aint worth it. Now mines a pint of Flowers. |
ok webteam ! mine's a v large voddy ! subject closed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) |
In case anyone is wondering what MadMav was doing outside my house at 6.00am last Saturday, he was not soliciting! The truth is that, as some people know, I've just bought a 748R and typically, it bears no resemblance to any other bike I've ever owned in terms of rideability...it's just a unique machine with foibles which I'm not yet used to. I voiced a few concerns on the site which I had about downshifting and a low tickover problem. MadMav sent me a u2u and offered to come down (from the Midlands) to Cambs where I live to look at the bike, check the clutch and transmission and generally get a feel for whether I had problem or not. If he found anything wrong, he was going to put it into the back of his van, take it back to JHP and say "Sort It!" He rode the bike, found nothing wrong but importantly, he re-assured me that there was not a problem...it was just me and my jap bike mentality...he gave me some tips to change my riding style which I will put into practice! Anyway, thanks again Keith for a very kind gesture. Now I'm going to put my twopenneth into the melting pot over the "Big Issue". If a member of let's say, a golf club started swearing at and/or abusing other members of the club, he would have it pointed out to him that his behaviour would not be tolerated and if it persisted, he would have his membership withdrawn and be slung out on his ear! One of the things about democracy is that it's easily abused and it's too easy to say that it's just someone expressing a point of view. Actually, it's nothing to do with it. It's just a very ignorant person using the anonymity of the board to incite, shock and offend. In short, it's not acceptable! |

I second that Charlotte, not going to comment on the thread, just want to meet and ride with nice, like minded people, of which there are many in this club. Did it today, and I'm still drying out, not one of my better decisions was it Peteb?:( |
Either my eyesight is dodgy or you will find that the whole thread has been removed. Thanks ever so much for that Webteam. Can we now get back to happy banter and biking ( albiet a bit wet today by the sounds of things ! ):D:D |
It\'s interesting .. .. that the activities of one individual can have such an impact, but, then again, that's the 'power'of an open web site. Madmav - Keith, we met at the AGM and you kindly gave about £100 worth of goods to the Riders for Health charity auction, you also joined the club if my memory serves me right. By any measure you are a member of this club and I would not be alone in being extremely sad if you chose to leave. [Edited on 7-3-2004 by Henners] |
Thanks Henners Thats real nice of you!! it just ****ed me off that for some reasone the way my posts come across that i'm only here for what i can get out of the club for my own gain. i suppose as a selfemployed person and the fact that if i dont earn (i starve) my postings do have a hint of (Buy it NOW) style !!! its just the way i am, but anyone who knows me personally, knows that i give far more than i expect in return . so you guys (and you know who you are ) give me a break as one day you might just need what i've got to offer ! FREE  mav |
Oh! Mav! Dont go!:( Everybody has a personality on this board...and can choose to live up to it when you meet in person. AND that is the point... Did you not say that I wasn't "what you expected"?...You were not either! You were very polite, kind, generous and not at all what I had expected. (Mind you you still came across as a replacement widow canvasser!:P;)) Like I keep saying...You can take all this with a pinch of salt. They are words. Would these words be said in public and to our faces...I think not! I am definately NOT the typical Duke owner...The daughter of a one parent family...Asian father...two children...husband...living in the poorest area of Nottingham City, teacher with a big mortgage and providing singlehandedly (until very recently) for my whole family. AND NO GARAGE! We keep getting the same people on this board. They are the paid up members who are serious about bikes and friendship. It would be a shame if the DSC ended up losing out because of a few WORDS! All I can say is that this club has changed my whole outlook on life. I have made great friends. Lisax |

The mind boggles....:D |
I would be honest to say I did'nt see or read the thread that has been of concern to the members so I cannot comment on that. Unfortunatly it seems every once in a while we have a run of either ill worded slanderous, callous, stupid, remarks that say little of the clubs main function in life. To meet up and share a common bond with each other, through the joys of motor cycleing. The message board is a great media for arranging ,organising, passing on idea's,banter to some degree, issues of a club nature, racing news, bike news, product news, but not for some of the clutter that we have been seeing. One little verse from Bambi says it all "If you hav'nt got some think nice to say ,then don't say nothing at all" So simple, be good to each other its what makes the world go round. If you do have some think a little stronger to say then think about it before you start typing it out,is it the kind of thing that you could say if you were sitting opposite that person in the cafe on a ride out because if it is,nt then it should not be heared here . Iv'e said this many times this is a good club (the Best)and its no good seeing good people thinking about moving on. ABUSE IT and you will LOOSE IT That is not an Option Gentlemen Regards 4D |
I 2nd that...... Wise words Fordie  |
Of course they are wise words from Fordie, he is after all 102 years old .... and I agree with him ... |
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: :lol: |
Dibble you tosser Im coming round to give you a good slapping 102 indeed Oh sorry lads Im Calm Ill just have a lie down :lol: |

Hey Lizzie, don't u get double glazed WIDOWS down your way, all good funeral directors should do 'em:lol: On a more sensible note, wise words from KB and that tearaway teenager 4D (don't want him giving me a slap, just money ha ha.) |
Can I make a request...? Can we have a members only area? The web is an international thing... The board can be accessed by people all over the world. We have no control over what is said. I have seen Club members get very irrate and "attack" new board members personally which provokes a counter attack from the new board member. Members of the club take offence to comments made by outsiders and treat this board as something to protect. It isn't...It is freely accessible to be used by anyone. If we want to "protect" the outside world from us...we should be able to have access to each other via a members only area. I just read back my own post! That is really sad, to re-read a post on a freely available board to check for fear of offending someone because I know some people! I thought the good thing about the internet was that it is anonomous...You can be who you want to be. Surely that is the problem here. We have too many issues going on, in conflict with one another. There is nothing wrong with posting what you want as long as paid up members can retreat to somewhere that is private to discuss what is being said on the board. It just creates an area where members can be themselves. Lisax Lisax Oops ...not affiliated with the rapper and Cult Jam!:P;) [Edited on 10-3-2004 by kwikbitch] |
Lisa, the possibility of a members only forum area was discussed at the 2003 AGM and the vast majority of attendees rejected the idea. The overall opinion was that a separate area would only create a them/us artificial separation and board members would loose out on the often valuable interaction between all contributors whether they be paid up or not. As a consequence of keeping the forum area open to public posting, it's encumbant on the Webteam ('cos we said we'd do it!) to monitor and if necessary edit entries that we felt were not appropriate. |
Yeah! I was there Eamon and voted for a members area!:P Good idea to edit though...BUT I just worry that we are already giving a "them and us" attitude from the way that some club members treat newbies. Perhaps i'm just a "nice" person that worries too much! ;):P |
This is just a thought from someone who was a bit upset by the aggressive reply to one of his first postings and would have not posted again if it hadn't been for a conversation with a member on another group.Would it not be possible to show ones DSC membership number alongside the other details in the left hand colum. At least then any newcomer who thought that a poster's attitude was " A bit off" would know if that person was a DSC member or not Not only did the fact that I was sworn at in the reply to my first posting put me off posting again but it made me feel that I wanted no more to do with the club itself. In my job I am sworn at by the public most days but at least I am paid for it. i really don't want the same experiance in my social life Fortunately for me I was persuaded to give it another go for which I am grateful. a big thank you to the member who persuaded me. You know who you are. I am sorry to go on so long but as a relative newcomer I am in a position to know how it feels coming on to the board for the first time |
Rocker, are you a parking warden:lol: Only kidding. Belated welcome m8! Mike |
No I'm not but I know a man that is. BTW what did you say your Reg number is:roll: [Edited on 11-3-2004 by Rocker] |
welcome back rocker. there's some pretty good people around here m8 lots of help and advice to be found |
Thanks I have already discovered how helpfull people on here can be and I hope to meet some of them this summer |
Hi all Just back from my holls! Anything interesting happen while I was away?:o:o:o:o |
Welcome Rocker I'll have a virtual pint of Pedigree. On a more serious note, I think Board Etiquette is of prime concern, as all who have followed the recent thread that I thought was, to say the least, OTT to a degree that I had to complain vociferously, the MT or other DSC Members should have the option to request "pulling" anything that is beyond the bounds of common decency. Think of it like this. One/. Would it be publishable in the local newspaper? Two/. If you received a mail like this, would you be extremely offended? If the answer to either is Yes, then some sort of censorship may be applied Please note that I have used the terms Option, may, etc, so that this means it is not a "right" but could be applied where necessary Big Brother Watching You, well yes to some degree, but as an open forum we as members must surely be aware that litigation could be applied if someone went so OTT that an individual thought a lawsuit could be brought. Slander and Libel (Slander for spoken untruths, and Libel for written untruths) are not so uncommon these days, and as I tried to point out before in another thread, written includes letters, e-mails etc. Maybe Im overcautious, but in this lititigous age, we need to monitor ourselves. MT and Members, what say you. As an example, Ive held back on a company that have done work on my machine and failed miserably to live up to their written and spoken promises, but I have refrained from ****ging them off in public. OK maybe this mail from me is over the top, but if we cant monitor ourselves, who will and what will the people we are trying to attract think?? Regards Mort If you would rather not reply in a public domain, u2u me or e-mail me at mortonp1@aol.com but no attachments as these will be deleted without opening |
Well I agree with Henners and joined the club for the same reasons except I bought my duke before joining. If I come across threads on the site I find offensive or not Ducati related I stop reading them. I do belive in freedom of speech but agree with the webteam lets keep it clean and above all keep it Ducati not cars or jap bikes.. Ducati only.. just my opinion Mark |
I agree with mark, we aren't forced to readall the posts. And Lisa, having a second read of your post before you hit the 'reply' button is not a bad thing. Many a time on this and other boards I've written a response to something, then read it and decided to simply not post it as it added little value to the conversation. :saint: Rocker, I like your idea of showing who are members. Just as we know who is a webteam member, why not show who is a club member. This may sound daft but if the majority of posters are members, seeing the fact helps to persuade other non-members to join. It certainly works on some of the car boards I frequent anyway ;) Cheers, John. |
