Clutches
 

Well not entirely new I was Braindead before. but forgot my login and well its time to move on.

Can any one tell me which clutch to buy and where to buy it for my 89 851? Its got a screcher trapped in the workings at present and I think I neew some new plates. Any other advice on looking after it fire away.

A good strip and clean every year works wonders. If your not proficient in the mechanical dept yourself, a decent independent will do it for £20 (takes them minutes), and youll notice the world of difference.

You may have done this, but put some spacers between the clutch cover and casing as this helps expel dust etc..thus getting rid of mr screechy !!!!

Hope that helps.....incidentally my 888 has just come back from service and the clutch is on its last legs. I am told a genuine duacti one fitted is around £300(or £700 for a bucci slipper clutch..yum yum !!)

That souds like a fine idea. Its been in about 4000miles. It was a genuine set of Ducati plates but they were diffecrent than the ones ithey replace that I think were baines sintered ones. Are baines still around as their website has gone fut!:devil::frog:

otto..thats a complete clutch I assume??...apparently it has 3 shims securing it and needs replacing ??? I do trust the guy though..why does that sound steep?

If you are just looking to replace the stack of discs then parts are probably £100 plus 30 mins easy work - definitely DIY.
I would take it apart anyway - very easy and have a look for yourself to see what has worn - stick it back together as it came out and you'll be no worse off than you started.
SP clutches are around £160 I think for the disk stack.

Not excessivley bad, but the guy was explaining about the problem. I cant remember exactly what he said but I seemed to remember him saying something about the casing being loose, and previous dealers bodging it together with shims..

As youll see..im a bit of a muppet when it comes to mechanics!!

He said they ahd put another shim on it (it now has 3?!) and it may last the summer though..

Oh and BTW I seem to remember that certain models have different no.s of plates, so I guess your mech might be comparing your clutch to a 9** and be a little confused.
I reckon Paul Payne should know a thing or two about these as he bought an 851 clutch disc set off me a few years back.

Ok Ok :lol::lol: Ill get the tools out..but ill be blaming you mate if it all goes tits up !!!

PPSS Also have a brand new set of Surflex plates from Baines........:D

aRE baines still around and what is a Surflex clutch. The one I pulled out of the 851 was one plate nmore that the one the dulards at Bridge supplied. How many plates does a 89 851 use and how much is a set from Baines?

also pay careful attention to the thickness of the plates (not including the friction material) as they are not all the same, and it might be that the set supplied will do the job.
