is my chain dead

i used to adjust my chain about once a month ish
always keep it clean, oiled and lubed. all of a suden i seem to be doin it every couple of days.
whats caused this, natural wear and tear, riding it all winter or do they just do that sir, dont think im over tightening. i do it at 30mm from center (the pin bit)of chain pulled down then pushed up.
its done about 11.5k still lots of adjustment left but going through it quick.

Road Runner 14-Mar-2004 09:17

I supose it depends on how hard you ride as well. I would have thought with 11.5 k it would put your mind at ease if you changed the chain and sprockets not big money !!

:):)

chris.p 14-Mar-2004 09:55

Lay it down & poke it with a stick:o , if it does not bite back, it`s dead:lol::lol::lol:

Are you remembering to tighten the pinch bolts after you have adjusted it :lol::lol::lol::lol:

rockhopper 14-Mar-2004 10:16

I'm starting to sound like a broken record on this one!! Next time you go to Nellys get him to fit a Scotoiler. Done 7000 miles on mine with no chain adjustment needed so far.

Glyn 18-Mar-2004 19:58

o.k it's dead
the bikes a 2001 st2
so is it x-ring or o-ring
is there any other alternitive to d.i.d
do i also need to replace sprockets
where's the cheapest place/site to order
thanks

Glyn, Ive had to change both the 900SS and the 996 chains laterly. About £126 fitted for the 996,the Vtwins are heavy on chains as well as tyres. I got about the same mileage as you 10/12000. Check that you hav'nt got a tight spot so when you check it in differant places you ar,nt getting a false reading each time.
But having said that if you do have one then the chains naf any way.Theirs no good news either way. 4D

Glyn,

Not much comfort I know, but that sounds about right for an ST2 chain. I got mine changed at it's big service with Nelly. The bike had done about 12.5K, so a little bit more mileage than yours (which isn't bad when you consider my bike has a much bigger engine than yours ;) ).

Neil used a Tsubaki chain and Renthals sprockets on mine - cost me around £130 or thereabouts. You'll need to change the lot because new chain on old sprockets = premature wear

Glyn 19-Mar-2004 16:27

ok new sprockets as well then
whats the score with fitting different size than standard on an st2
is it worth trying a 14 on the front??

Athelstan 19-Mar-2004 20:50

12000miles

Glyn - my chain was regularly tensioned, lub'd etc and developed tight spots etc just before the 12k service. It seems from all the posts that that is about the distance for a chain on the ST series - mine's an ST4s.

At the time of changing I had a Renthal 15T front sprocket fitted and a std rear, plus the Tsubaki 102L chain - total bill = £126.74

Hope that helps.

;)

ps wots the standard front sprocket? always great to drop front by 1 tooth, makes a great acceleration mod.

Mike Davis 20-Mar-2004 18:15

Be Wary of DID Gold X-Ring chains Glyn.

We have stopped supplying them because of amount that break on twins.

It was supposed to be a dodgy batch that was three years ago and I still hear stories of them breaking now.

It`s not just the inconvienience its the damage done when they fly off.

Glyn 20-Mar-2004 18:28

long time ago.........
had a chain snap on an mbx 125 snagged on my nice alloy swing arm and near on pulled it off.

mort standard st2 sprockets are 15 front and 42 back
would'nt mind trying the smaller front, but how much difference will this make to an st2 top end??

has anyone out there done this on an st2?

Rushjob 20-Mar-2004 18:39

I did - my old ST2 had a 14/42 setup and went like a train.
Don't worry about losing top end speed - when was the last time you got it to rev out totally in top?
By this I mean hitting the rev limiter!
In the real world this just does not happen - my ST4S on standard gearing is set for something over 175mph if you could red line it - the real world top end is at least 20mph below.
Change the gearing...if you're that bothered about the cost, a talon front sprocket is only about £14 - buy the altered gearing when you replace the chain & if you don't like it, get a 15 & someone will no doubt have the 14 off you.
Do it.
Go on.
Go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on

paulmort 22-Mar-2004 20:38

Yup. Glyn

15 to 14 front, you'll think you got a new (and better) bike
werks fer me

BDG 22-Mar-2004 21:04

I'll second rushjobs comments for the st4s, the 14 tooth sprocket is the best/cheapest way to more useable performance.

Not sure about st2 though but for the price its got to be worth trying.
