Couple of things... Yet more questions I'm afraid... :o I have recently bought a set of those mirrors with the indicators in built. Just thought it would be a change. Anyway, after fitting them, I noticed that my indicators now flash quickly. I had a look at the bulbs in the new mirrors and they are 12V 5W, this is the problem as I think they need to be 10W in order to work properly.. The problem is that I cannot seem to find any 10W bulbs the same, they are not like normal bulbs as I would call them. There is no metal bottom to the bulbs they are all glass and just push into position. I am sure that there is a name for them but I dont know it. Went into Halfords and they dont sell the 10w version, infact, not even sure you can get them. Any ideas? On another note. I have noticed something strange is happening on my bike. When I pull away, it seems to take a little longer for the clutch to engage. I.e. I let the lever out I move a little, but then it suddenly 'bites'. What does this mean? Cheers Lloydy |
Lloydy, Sorry I can't help you with any of your problems. I was hoping, though, that you could post a picture of the new mirrors in question fitted to the bike. Are these the same ones that were in MCN a couple of weeks ago? Cheers! Scott |
Hi the bulbs are called capless bulbs,not sure if you can get 10w ones though.You might be able to get a different wattage flasher relay. Has the clutch suddenly gone like this or has it got worse over time?Have you checked to make shore that the slave cylinder is not leaking(common fault)One other thing is to make shore the clutch is not clogged up with dust if you are running a closed cover.Hope this helps a little,i am shore shazam might have the answers for you though.:roll: Matt |
Hi, I have noticed the clutch making a kind of squeeking noise when pulling away before, but nothing as drastic as what it does now. Dont know if it is the clutch or something else. MY chain is a little loose, but that shouldnt cause this, should it? As for the bulbs, hmmm, thats not too good then. Where would I get a new flasher relay from? I am guessing that it isnt something Ducati have. Would that mean changing all of the bulbs in the indicators to 5w? |
Cant help with yer clutch problems but have you tried your local electronics shop for replacement bulbs. My local Maplin Electronics has a good stock of "unusual" wattage bulbs in stock or can order them in if you have difficulty elsewhere! :borg: |
Annette had the same problem with her clutch, when I stripped it to check what was wrong the pushrod had snapped where the O ring groove was. I fitted the later clutch slave cylinder and pushrod and changed the bearing in the pressure plate the problem disapeared. (mind you the look on Annettes face when she wheelied away from the lights at redhill was a picture) dave |
Well, I think that I already have the latest slave cylinder as my bike is a 2002 996. Now you have mentioned the push rod, it maybe something to do with that as I had to take it out to change the front sprocket. To be honest, not really sure what I am looking for if I pull the clutch apart and am a bit scared of doing it.. |
Don't forget that there are different sizes of clutch pushrods! You may be lucky and find that your clutch just needs adjusting. I would take it to a Ducati specialist as they should be able to diagnose it quite quickly. |
My clutches start making that groaning squeeking noise when they are on their last legs. Take it all apart and blow out the dust and you might get another thousand miles out of it if your lucky. I also mix up the plates but some people say you shouldnt do this. Just trying to work out why you should need to take the push rod out to change the front sprocket... JHow many miles has the bike done? You can get grabby clutch engagement becasue of damage to the fingers on the basket. |
Yes, the groaning sound is probably more accurate. Not too sure I am confident enough to pull the clutch out and clean it.. all looks a bit scary to me :o The bike has done 10k, is this as longs as the clutch should last. As for removing the slave cylinder and the pushrod, urrm, it is what the manual said to do, and there just wasnt enough room to remove the sprocket otherwise. Mark |
hi Lloydy, the answer to your bulb problem is not very expensive you only need a inline resistor the same used with kellerman indicators normally fitted to monster handle bars |

Maybe there are slight differences, i didnt need to touch mine. 10,000 miles appears to be about right for a clutch. The plates hammer against the fingers of the basket and form ridges which the plates stick on when you use the clutch. You can dress the ridges out if they are not too bad. This is what causes the grabby action. Its only a half hour job to change the plates, a bit longer (and special tools needed) to change the basket. Buy a Haynes book? |
rockhopper, I have a Hyanes manual. So, do you think it is just the clutch plates that need changing then? Is this relatively easy to do? |
New slant on things Just popped into the garage to check the bike again. It is on the paddock stand, so I gave the rear wheel a spin. The same clunking noise, then nothing. Had a play around and it seems, that there is a point when the wheel will move on its own, without the sproket and chain moving. The clunk is when they catch up, so to speak. I also noticed some movement in the wheel, so, a thinking that maybe it hasnt been put on correctly? Any ideas before i remove the wheel and have a look [Edited on 15-3-2004 by Lloydy] |
