my Marvic wheels are in the bin!!!!!!!!

just got the shock of my life today.........
fitting new tyres to the 748 and lo and behold the rear marvic is starting to split along all 5 spokes..........DOH! lucky i was having a close look as i could of easly missed it...(the black marker pen is either side of the cracks ..
realy am shocked, i did 8 trackdays last year with these wheels :mad:
i supose the old wifes take of mag wheels going off after a few years is true then.....

nathanhu 14-Apr-2004 21:47

oppps big pic file. this ones better

skidlids 14-Apr-2004 21:51

Oh sh@@, well spotted, costly but not as costly as it might have been if you hadn't noticed.

Shazaam! 14-Apr-2004 22:30

I'd contact Marvic through their dealer and arrange to return it. It looks like a manufacturing defect to me. Probably associated with the heat treatment cooling rate given the symmetry of the cracking. If there's no evidence of an curb impact etc. to indicate that it's your fault, I'd bet that a good customer relations policy would prompt them to replace it without charge.

Iconic944ss 14-Apr-2004 22:47

Shazaam, you beat me to it by minutes my friend.

I couldnt help wondering about product liability for racing though...fit for purpose is one thing but if they had been used constantly say, every weekend during summer - then thats potentially a lot of tracktime.

Having said all that - from the symetrical fractures it does possibly look like a manufacturing fault.

Good Call !

For those of you that can remember that far back, there was a load of trouble with Marvic Mag wheels in the mid nineties, 125 bikes and up had the same problems, culminating in Robert Dunlops big get of an RC45 at about 130mph, ripped the middle out of the spokes exactly the way this wheel was on its way doing.

Count that as a lucky day.

marksduc748 14-Apr-2004 22:53

its a scarey thought and I do have marvic rims on mine and will be checking them first thing in the morning.

Iconic944ss 14-Apr-2004 23:46

Don't they have to be X-rayed to be certain though ????

Sorry 2 say :(

marksduc748 15-Apr-2004 00:45

well wouldnt you say the cracks showing make it certain??

ScottyB 15-Apr-2004 03:45

Well spotted that man.....I hate to think what would have happened if you had not noticed.

Finger's crossed for you that Marvic play ball and replace it.

I would be inclined to not say too much about the amount of track day use and more point out the same problem's previously.

Let the magic figure of 125 bikes out at an early stage to show you know their historical problems in the mid nineties with the wheel.

Good luck, keep us all informed of how you get on......

Maybe one of the guys/gals can help you write a suitable complaints letter.....There must be a "professional complainer" amongst our ranks????

All the best in getting it replaced

Regards

Scotty B

Are these Penta 1\'s or 2\'s?

I had heard there were problems with early Penta 1's not sure if these are the symptons though.

nathanhu 15-Apr-2004 09:30

penta 2´s

im realy not that hot on using the front either now!!

Rattler 15-Apr-2004 09:32

How old are they?

........how much road use?

nathanhu 15-Apr-2004 09:39

about 5-6 years old
not a great deal of road use or track use realy,no bumps or bad scratches either

Nattyboy 15-Apr-2004 10:47

Crikey Mike..I remember that Robert Dunlop off...the duke TT video for that year had private video footage of the crash'him hitting a wall..and a picture of the wheel afterwards..horrific.

I think im right in saying he had a big payout from that regarding product liability.

Phew, Lucky escape... I would be onto Marvic too.

Don't quite understand why some people would gloss over the track use in getting back to the manufacturer...after all why would anyone have Marvics in the first place unless they wanted a higher performance wheel? Racing? Track days? That's what they're made for and what they're marketed as isn't it?

Simon Reed 20-Apr-2004 10:40

Wasn't it Dymag not Marvic who paid out to Robert Dunlop ? anyway never the less,if you contact them they'll probabaly want the wheels back anyhow, so they can takem out of the system, cos there'll be some unscrupulous bodyshop that'll fill and paint em ! & we all know the potential out come of that !!good luck

Iconic944ss 20-Apr-2004 10:59

There was athread recently on here about a Marvic problem concerning the rivetting on the Early Superlight wheels so I tried to find some info on the Marvic website

http://www.marvic.it/lastoriaing.htm

sadly, its one of the slowest business website I've ever seen !!!

"Dunlop had been looking for in the region of £1.4m but on Thursday he agreed to accept the £700,000 sum.

The rider had made a claim against his former team boss Stuart Medd, wheel maker Marvic and its former UK distributor Racing Lines. "
