to nod or not to nod, that is the question

Dont you just hate it when you give the passing biker a nod and he/she ignores it, and then you think "right, i`m not gonna do it next time, then the next one to pass nods you and you quickly nod back but its to late and they didnt see it, so now they are thinking "tosser i`m not doing the next one" so the whole process starts over........

Col996s 15-May-2004 22:43

I know what you mean. Seem to get fewer nods now I'm on a Duc.

Loz 15-May-2004 22:50

It's funny, but I get fewer nods on the 999 than I do on my 750 Sport.
But regardless, I continue to nod and do the "invisible wink", as I am an ambassador for Ducati and must present a friendly, approachable face to my less fortunate, non-Ducatisti brethern

Oops, more beer, less posting I think

Glyn 16-May-2004 10:21

i nod to every one cause im a nice chap like that.if they dont nod back thats up to them i've done my bit.

the only thing i draw the line at is the lunitic fringe on there rev n go's

Jewell 16-May-2004 10:28

but do you nod at people on sports 600s wearing flip flops, shorts and a t-shirt?

i dont get any nods when on my 400 wearing my work clothes but when in full leathers, everyone nods.
probably because they think im a right dumbass riding without my gear on.another "Squid" as the yanks say.

I'm not nodding ... I'm shuddering. :frog:

ath748 16-May-2004 13:31

I always give a nod - used to always get return nods when I was on my R6, but not from Duc riders! Only got a few on Friday though, which was a bit crap. Jealousy is a miserable thing!!
:D

Ade.

TP 16-May-2004 13:37

I always nod but don't get too many back when I'm riding into the city in London. I wasn't sure if it was just an english thing (always get nods in Aus but never owned a Duc - my last bike there was a VTR 1000) or a Duc thing.

I wish I had 10p for every time someone has come up to me and said I'm about to throw my cam chain!!! Umm, ever heard of a dry clutch?

TP

COME ON BAYLISS!!!!

Rocker 16-May-2004 13:50

I tend to nod at every one or any many cases do the leg wave thing as commuting on the M20 every day I see many of our European cousins.
The one big exception is scooters but I gues you would have guessed that from my user name:D

bradders 16-May-2004 17:38

what about large groups?? nod at the first?? or any that nod to you?

kwikbitch 16-May-2004 18:20

Mark853 16-May-2004 22:27

I always nod even to scooter riders, only they don't seem to nod back! realy stuck up them scooter riders:lol:

If a car pulls over for me or makes an effort to not slow me down i put my had up but that's cos i've got manners:D

If people don't nod back it's their problem, sod em that's what i say

:frog:

guest1 17-May-2004 00:08

I nod, I have even been known to flash.
And when there's a scooter less than two foot from the rear of my car, then I give em a friendly squirt with the windscreen wipers - they always wave back at me.

JasonBoswell 17-May-2004 00:25

I'll nod at other sports bikes, but dont bother with couriers/customs/trailees/trikes and the like. And as a scooterer myself, its ok not to nod as frankly theres just so many of the bleeders in town its just a pain.. and theres really not that kind of cameraderee (sp?) amoung the CVT set. ;);)

MJS 17-May-2004 07:48

I nod to pretty much everyone except the scooters... unless I'm head down and focused in which case I don't... have noticed I don't get so many nods back on the Duc though... still keep nodding though

Eamonn 17-May-2004 10:39

Those old enough may remember when you actually waved at fellow bikers- nodding was what policemen on their Velocette LE's used to do.

I suspect that nodding has taken over since when you're in the sports bike position its much harder to lift your hand from the bar and then there's the windstream to contend with which is just accentuated by the flow over the fairing!

Whatever form the recognition takes, it seems to be only directed at bikes of (say) 500cc and above - anything that looks big enough! One reason why Dukes may get fewer nods is that from the front perspective the bike looks quite small - compare the front image of a Duke to the Hayabusa for example. By the time you've realised its a big bike worthy of nodding, it's too late!

You can get arrested for that!

I've found that on the 748 i get nodded at, as much as when on the zzr. Some peeps do nod, some don't, sometimes i forget to nod myself. I find tho, on the whole, harley riders are the worse, followed by the race rep. The street.naked/power bikes seem to always nod.

antonye 17-May-2004 15:09

I only nod for REAL bikers...

I've noticed that nodding isn't really done within the M25 - simply due to the amount of couriers who are all too busy and the traffic all trying to knock you off.

It's great riding out of London - you know you're getting to the edges when the first inbound rider nods at you!

Ray 17-May-2004 16:15

On Sundays and wednesdays The "nod" cam be pretty scarce near big bike meet areas, maybe to avoid the nodding dog syndrome!!

Maybe the 748/9** look too much like a Mito to get the nod??!!

A good reason to buy a new model??

Ray

Rob B 17-May-2004 18:47

Even worse, when I am in the car and I make a clear swing into the gutter to let a bike pass and they don't even acknowledge the gesture. Not doing themselves any favours. Watched a lass pass a bunch of cars on Saturday, most made a serious move so she had unhindered progress and not even a raised pinkie on the bar end.

ho hum.

Rgds,

Rob

I always pull well over to let bikes pass and I very rarely get a hand up to say thanks !

I always used to nod at other bikers when I was pillioning, It saved Dave having to do it !

As for the lady the other day Rob, she was probably too scared to take one hand off the bar to say ' cheers '

antonye 18-May-2004 00:01

Personally, I hate it when a car drives in the gutter if you're behind them on the bike.

The bike has plenty of power to get past when I chose it to, so you stay where you are and I'll go when I'm ready, thank you!

But I will acknowledge if they do it, just out of courtesy.

HellsBells 18-May-2004 00:03

Well I won't go as far as to drive in the gutter, more just to give you guys enough room to pass without straddling the white line too much where you could promptly get wiped out by the next myopic 75 year old !!!!

Point taken though !

Wasn't intended as a rant, just an opinion :D

I caught myself doing it the car just this weekend, so I like to think it's the right thing to do but I hate it when I'm on the bike myself.

:oink:

HellsBells 18-May-2004 00:19

Hey, I didn't take it as a rant... I just hadn't thought of it from your point before !

It's always good to get another opinion !

( think I am a bit tetchy tho.... my dave has been in another slanging match with your mate and it bothers me !! )

Is Dave a good multi tasker?:bouncy::lol:

HellsBells 18-May-2004 00:25

Mark, it must be the blond in me but...... Uh ????????

Glyn 18-May-2004 00:32

i can pass most cars at what ever point in time i chose to do so, they dont need to pull over apart from when the traffic is very slow and your i'm a bit of filtering.
what i often come accross is drivers getting well over at totaly inapropriate places and then staring at you in the mirror, e.g solid white in middle of road coming up to the brow of a hill.
if i was daft enough to overtake at such a place the last thing i want is the driver in front worrying about what im doing, it's not helping anyone.
if i don't feel its safe to overtake i'll just wait till it is, while driver bloke does half a mile in the gutter without his full concentration on the road ahead.

this also isn't a rant, i just dont think it's the safest practice.
i sure as hell don't get out of the way when i'm in my car

Rocker 18-May-2004 05:31

I always give a wave if somebody moves over for me.On my way to work I go near a large freight distribution depot and therefore I am often behind European registered trucks. Almost without exception these will do their best to let me get past indicating when it is safe to do.What a shame that most of the Brit registered ones do not follow suit. Some of the Tesco trucks wil even move towards the centre of the road to stop you passing. I guess this is an indication of how bikes are much more accepted in mainland Europe
