Quickie Question

Just a quicky,
picking my bike up Friday, was going to get some Top up oil, what should I put in it?? or should I ask the garage where I bought it from to see what they serviced it with??
it an 02 748 E, and its red not yellow, so that will prob make a difference:sing:

Topping up the oil!!! whats that then? only time i've had to do that is when i changed it

Desmondo 18-May-2004 12:35

Do a search for oil and you'll find a few posts about various types. I use Shell Advance 15/50

Find out what your dealer used first you don't want to go out and buy a bottle of say 10/50 and find they put 15/50 in it

TP 18-May-2004 13:14

But make sure it's for the red bikes ;)

You don't want to put yello woil in and slow it down now ...

By the way has anybody ever tried slick 50 in a duke?

skidlids 18-May-2004 19:37

I use Silkolene 10W/40 and am perfectly happy with it, I didn't realise 10W/50 was recommended although I remember Topitoo saying thats what he was using.

From the Ducati.com website

Ducati uses Shell Advance Ultra with SAE 10W-40 Grade in all of its models.

Quickie Question

Don't you just love the Italians.
It specifically states in the manual I have 15W 50. it also states in the dealers own workshop manual for most models 15W 50. The dealer also refused to put the 10W 40 that I'd bought into the bike, something about kanckering the rocker arms.

Yup

TopiToo 19-May-2004 18:43

Hello,

I am using 15w50 silkolene oil, so far no problems although my local Ducati dealer only seem to stock 10w40 and could not understand why I would need to put any thing other in.

I have had one engine go bang am am sick of paying for rockers, that Ducati deny are a problem.
I will change my oil every 2 to 3000 miles and see how I get on.

Like I say so far no problems, bike seems to run well after a good run.

Hope this helps some. . .

regards

TopiToo

Michael's has used Shell Advance Ultra 10/40 from new without any problems. Never needed new rockers either...

Yes, even worked alright in my 750ssie with a wet clutch!
Never been anywhere near a dyno so dunno if it makes any difference that way, just feel better riding it before it's "properly" warmed up!

so is it recommended then??

Believe the manufacturers of Slick 50 are being sued in USA as they cannot prove conclusively that it works, however I have seen it being put into a V12 Jag engine and watched the idle revs increase as it circulated. What does this prove?, not sure, but the engine was certainly quieter afterwards. As an aside, Castrol make a 15(?)/60 oil for high performance car engines (not reccomended for bike engines with wet clutches). Anybody think this will hold together better at high loads/temperatures??
Am willling to try anything after my recent rocker/cam lobe interface problem :D:D:D
