What oil you guys using?

i live here in the US and am having difficulty getting ahold of the shell motorcycle brand of oils. What do you guys run if your not currently running the shell line?

skidlids 27-May-2004 20:46

Silkolene Comp 4 , grade 10W40, have used it in big V-twins for 5 yearsnow including the race TL1000 and the race 916

DC 27-May-2004 23:18

I use shell fully synthetic advance ultra 15w40. But I also use the rock oil and castrol fully synthetic oils.

I always used to use semi synthetic oils but know I have the Ducati I tend to go fully synthetic with plenty of changes if I am doing the milage.:)

Vlud 28-May-2004 04:02

so you guys are going 15w40? Thought for Ducati's everyone tended to lean toward 15w50.

skidlids 28-May-2004 04:13

No I said I use 10W40 as recommended by Ducati

http://www.ducati.com/bikes/service....ng&detailId=46

"Ducati uses Shell Advance Ultra with SAE 10W-40 Grade in all of its models."

Vlud 28-May-2004 04:17

Weird, thought everyone swore by the 15w50, my bad

Shazaam! 28-May-2004 04:28

Vlud 28-May-2004 05:20

Doh........confusion setting in, i'm lost.
Why auto oil?

baylissboy 28-May-2004 09:46

Hi Vlud,i've used 15w-50 Mobil 1 bike oil in all my Dukes(currently 998S & 916SPS),never had any problems!

smilo006 28-May-2004 10:17

What oil you guys using

See also earlier thread.

But in the manual I have (996R) it specifically states 15W 50. The Dealer also refused to put in 10W 40. They supply Shell but also Sikoline full synth

Felix 28-May-2004 10:31

Motul 300V, recommended by the likes of John Hackett, but mainly because it smells so good when you come in from a hot track session!

MarkyMark76 28-May-2004 11:10

Castrol GPS

keith_mann1959 28-May-2004 11:33

Motul 300v, but i'm trying to get some amsoil.
Would have thought you might use Amsoil if you are in america.
These are both Ester based oils.

Vlud 28-May-2004 14:30

So Amsoil would be a good choice then? It's what i was leaning towards using. I know it suggests 15w40 but i here alot from all over about going 15w50, why is that? By the way, thanks for all the replies too guys.

uncledunnie 28-May-2004 14:41

Rock-oil 15/50 Synthesis racing oil - as recomended by Mr Spalding

Ray 28-May-2004 14:59

Oh dear the great oil debate again!!

What oil you got? Everyone has there own favourites. I have even seen weasel Pee recommended on the Ducati index!!

Only use whatever the latest Ducati recommendation is myself, usually. This equates to whoever is sponsoring the Ducati Corse.

I can see the sense in going for a fully synthetic **/50.

Have a look at www.shell.com loads of info. You can even win a 999!! (got to shift em somehow!!)

I would be wary of using a car oil in a bike, even tho' Mr Shazaam! does, purely for the reason that some additives that help the oil cope with the combined engine/transmission you get on bikes but not on cars MAY be missing. (Yes I know Old minis etc used to have 'em but are you really gonna use castrol GTX in yer bike??)

Whatever you go for I would change it every 12 months/3k miles whichever is the sooner, cheap insurance/

Ray

skidlids 28-May-2004 15:39

Must admit that if my Local Honda shop sold Mobil 1 and would do it for the same price as they do me the Silkolene I would use it as I did use it in my IL4 race bikes, but as I get the Silkolene at around 60% of the cost of Mobil 1 and when your racing with regular oil changes that adds up and with 5 years of running Comp4 on both road and track I see no reason to change

keith_mann1959 28-May-2004 16:01

Vlud
Amsoil has the highest film strength of ANY retail available oil. I want it to help give my rockers a chance of survival. Its very hard to find in the uk and F... expensive.
They do a 20w/50 "2000" racing oil

Well done Uncledunnie, me too and for the same reason. Mr Spalding was the last person to play with the engine. Although Nelly is changing the oil while he has it tomorrow and I think he uses Shell - still a 15/50 fully synth though .. I asked about shear strength etc - Nelly's happy with it.

Vlud 28-May-2004 18:24

rcgbob44 29-May-2004 22:25

Mazola pure corn oil or warm lard but with the lard its a bitch to turn the engine over when its cold!:lol::lol:

Vlud 30-May-2004 05:05

kwikbitch 30-May-2004 22:11

rockhopper 30-May-2004 22:19

kwikbitch 30-May-2004 22:32

Do you know it was nice to meet you too!!!!

(Hope I didn't put you off Old "Blighty" too much"!)

AND that Macee dees was Brill Wasn't it!!!!!;)

rockhopper 30-May-2004 22:36

I wouldnt normally put Brill and Macee dees in the same sentence!! But yes it was rather good with all you nice people around.

TP 30-May-2004 22:37

Yeah it was tasty, thanks to you and Morty!!!

Nice to chill out with my bike up on the stand, new stainless steel bolts, a good hug for her, new fluids ... mmmmm ... pity about the 150 miles back home :(

rockhopper 30-May-2004 22:40

Just think how relaxing it would have been with a nice tinted screen though.

TP 30-May-2004 22:44

Hrmmmm ... u bugger - Next time p'raps.

Still got the shoulder ache regardless of the clipon move and the lever positioning ...

rockhopper 30-May-2004 22:47

I get that on mine after a hundred miles or so. I think if i'm riding fast (motorway speeds) i tend to hunch up and get tense. Need to relax more.

Moving the clipons will help in the long run i would have thought.

kwikbitch 30-May-2004 22:48

back ache?????...DRONGO!!!!!!:lol::lol::lol:

TP 30-May-2004 22:51

Not my back, just my right shoulder .... weird pain never had it on any of my bikes before. Only get it after 100 miles or so.

I like that M1 (as far as motorways go ...) you can get along at a fair clip and not terrorise anyone. ;)

rockhopper 30-May-2004 22:52

When i emigrated to WA the Australian High Comission asked me if i had a criminal record. I said i was sorry, i didnt realise that i still needed one.

kwikbitch 30-May-2004 22:53

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

rockhopper 30-May-2004 22:59

Sorry about that. I like ozzies and i especially like girls with nice Australian accents! Always a winner that one.

TP 30-May-2004 23:09

Dear oh dear!

Redrocket996 04-Apr-2005 11:08

Does anyone use the Mobil1 V Twin 20W-50? I'm putting my bike in for a service on Thursday and after reading all the posts here and further to Shazaam's post I am seriously considering using Mobil oil and this V Twin 20W-50 sounds like it could be ideal for me here in the South of France where it gets pretty hot in the summer!

Walenut 04-Apr-2005 11:30

Here's the conclusions I came to:
