Torque settings for 999

Anyone know of a definitive list of torque settings for the 999, specifically the 999R.

I'm looking at settings for:

Front & rear wheel nuts, i.e. I have 180NM for the rear wheel nut
Rear sprocket nuts

etc, etc, etc...............

nelly 30-May-2004 11:48

The front is probably the same as the ealier bikes. 67Nm +/- 5Nm.
I'd go for 43Nm on the sprocket nuts.
sorry, don't have the manual with me ;)

Cheers Neil,

Expectant of a wet BH Weekend I'm doing some detailed cleaning & degreasing:lol::lol:

The rear sprocket is shocking.

Any advice on a good degreaser. Also, if I remove the sprocket from the wheel is there an order in which I should torque up the 5 nuts..........going round opposite to opposite??

nelly 30-May-2004 12:09

If the sprocket is off the bike you can't beat Gunk or Jizer. They're too strong though to use when in situ around the chain. Not good for the grease in the pins. :smug:
Muc-off or Wurth is good for general cleaning. work it a little with an old toothbrush if it's stubborn.
When you refit the sprocket, nip everything down in a star pattern, then torque up in the same way.
Have fun

everton 30-May-2004 12:38

Sprocket's off.............you sure they're only torqued to 43..............phew!!

I'll give the sprocket a good soak andclean up round the cush...etc

Same torque settings for the rear disk???????????

Should be looking good for the next Berks/Oxon meet next Sunday :smug::smug::smug::smug::smug::smug:

Hey Everton, you not going to takethe opportunity of a larger rear sprocket then? 38??

Im doing this this week, obviously needed a longer chain so ive gone for a gold erv2, and ill lengthen the wheel base aswell while im at it.

have fun.

nathanhu 30-May-2004 20:10

andyb the 38 tooth fitts with the standard chain and shortens the wheel base

dave w 30-May-2004 21:28

Andy..... 38 rear..... 14 front works for me
No more links needed...... just a new soft link :saint:

nathanhu 30-May-2004 21:37

why do you need a new soft link?

dave w 30-May-2004 21:44

Nathan....... when you remove the front sprocket you have to split the chain as there is no clearance to remove it...... Hence new soft link.

nathanhu 30-May-2004 21:48

try taking the clutch slave off and get wiggling
:P

nathanhu 30-May-2004 21:52

just kidding with the - :P
not easy to do
but it helps to take the rear wheel off so the chain can run a little untrue and you can twist the chain and the front sprocket out the front

dave w 30-May-2004 22:00

Nathan..... removed clutch slave...... bloody wiggled for ages.... rear wheel removed..... no joy:flame: gave in and split the chain..... You must have more patience than me !!

andyb 30-May-2004 22:19

You dont want to shorten the wheelbase, makes the bike very unstable in long corners...

I am not only fitting a 38 rear, i am also going to move the wheel further back to achieve 500mm between the swingarm pivot and the wheel centre.

nathanhu 30-May-2004 22:36

andy
very true that the longer swingarm makes for a more stable set up
but
more stability = slower turning
you speak off a instabilaty in long corners, harder rear spring may help

andyb 30-May-2004 23:27

the reason im doing this is because j hackett says do it....must be something in that?
( incidently its the same for the 998etc aswell as the 999, just cheaper and easier to achieve on the 999)

nathanhu 31-May-2004 10:58

andy ive just got back from Assen with my bike and a 03 999r both with a smaller front sprocket and the then longer wheel base as i left out the 38 tooth rear , my 999s had a hard time turning on the über fast back section as i was still using a steep head angle , so i put it back to standard angle and fitted the 38 rear and the bike was a lot less effort to turn at high speed(over 240 kph)
ok 100% stable it wasnt but at high speed and 2 meters behind another bike the turbulance from the bike infront was the greatest problem to my instability!!

dave w 31-May-2004 12:40

Nathan.... you must be doing something wrong..... the bikes should be behind you not infront !!!!!!:lol::lol:

andyb 31-May-2004 12:41

Interesting, did you ever measure the length your pivot to wheel centre was changing from/ to/between?

nathanhu 31-May-2004 13:11

nice one dave :frog:

:bouncy::bouncy:

chillo 07-Jun-2004 14:36

i going to fit a smaller front sprocket as it won't come up off the power in 2nd:rolleye: and i have to come up in first and work my way through the box!:D

has any just fitted a smaller front to a 999R?
