43bhp

hello, just had my bike dyno'd 43bhp,,, is that good? I'm told that better ignition modules will make it more, does anyone know? apart from that its all good (i think) what do other people have, do you know?

Matt
p.s. I'm really really looking forward to donington!!

skidlids 01-Mar-2009 19:14

43bhp is very low, the limit for class B is 53bhp

As for igniters, how will they improve things unless they alter the advance and if they alter it by a few to many degrees it would make them illegal

1.6.31 Ignition/Engine Control System

Ignition/engine control system (Ignitors) may be changed. Any alteration that allows the number of degrees of spark advance beyond the manufacturers standard specification is not allowed.

Have you had the cam timing checked, they can be along way out when they left the factory

Ray 01-Mar-2009 19:20

IIRC 48-50 at the real wheel is par for the course on a Class B bike.

Dynos can vary a bit though and there are a lot of things that can affect the real wheel horsepower other than how good the engine is.

Was the dyno operator happy that is as good as the engine can manage. Did they give any feedback on the fuelling?

You'll find out for sure if you are down on HP on the long journery to the first corner. :D

Mine is running std ignitors at 52bhp, As Kev has said I would get the cam timing checked out, Mind it would have thought it would have to be a fair way out to lose circa 20% HP
What spec is the motor?? Airbox, Pipe,Jetting Etc
As has been said what is the fueling like on the dyno sheet, I think you need to scan and post it up here.

Not good, at least Donny's not a fast flowing track otherwise the lack of power would really show up!!! - DOH!!!

bradders 01-Mar-2009 21:24

getting the excuses in early, I like it ;)

mat2hew 01-Mar-2009 21:31

I cant loose........ if I do well it's me not the bike and if i do bad.... it's that bloody bike!!

Sounds like most racers doesn't it?

Anyway here's the dyno...

mat2hew 01-Mar-2009 21:40

and now i know how to attach a pic...

here is a pic from the worst track day I have ever done, it peeeed down all day it was wet, i was cold, loads of people crashed, I lost all confidence after going across the grass at 100mph and everyone was faster than me, (apart from the green gsxr) and the DD broke down on the strait and I had to be rescued and I took my kettle but forgot the tea bags! so I went home early... apart from that it was a good day!

That was the last time I rode the bike and I don't plan on riding it before donington.

so I'm in the right mindset :)

good picture though!

Ignition igniters, defo. I had mine dyno'd last year 42 bhp but also running rich. I raced it like this untill I tried a new set of igniters. What a difference!! The old ones were not advancing. Also one had black potting and one had blue potting.

Some peeps are using the DP AL9000 units.

Scooter916 01-Mar-2009 21:45

Go to a better Dyno and get that Fueling sorted that looks Horrific

mat2hew 01-Mar-2009 21:48

Arr... I see

thanks, I did a track day at brands, and it rides beautifully, It felt quicker than I thought it would and it corners so fast you don't use the brakes much, but they feel pretty good too, so we'll see........

did i mention i'm new to all this nonsence?

I thought it looked quite nice with all the blue and red lines and stuf, is it that bad? the bloke in the garage said it was o.k. (but he was a bit strange) not very helpfull.

bradders 01-Mar-2009 21:53

isnt it meant to be between the green and red lines?!

Scooter916 01-Mar-2009 21:53

The Clue is in the bottom Graph, Upper Air/fuel and lower A/f limit Idealy you need to carburate between these lines
Your fueling is spot on at 6000 rpm and 8000 RPM thats it, too rich and too lean everywhere else.

its above and below the tolerance so must be lean somewhere...which is rich?

mat2hew 01-Mar-2009 22:05

bradders 01-Mar-2009 22:06

Very rich bottom end bradders..... 13 parts air to 1 part fuel should be about right for a racebike at one point its down to 10 parts air to 1 part fuel, so very rich

bradders 01-Mar-2009 22:27

so if its 15:1 its lean

Scooter916 01-Mar-2009 22:42

Recon so mate.

Chris Wood 01-Mar-2009 23:08

My old 583 had - 58bhp. IIRC

Stage 2 Dynojet kit, middle of the 3 options on needles, open top filter box (no cover), 900ss headers - twin 900SL exhaust.

New I had posted this before: from 2006

"I changed to 146 main jets, left everything else same as 675 Dynojet kit.

Running 900 headers and Hi Level 900SL open pipes.

Works for me...58hp at the crank, nice curves.

Doesn't idle though..."

After our dice at caddy you told me you only had 21BHP, I had such respect for you after that Chris.....;)

Same here.

WeeJohnyB 03-Mar-2009 14:26

I think the max the CB5's can have is 54, although mine is 49 last few times it's been on a dyno, most are around that level, although my bike has not been serviced apart from oil change in 4 years and is blowing a bit on an old exhaust so probably a bit lower these days, certainly, people who ride it think it's a slow one by comparison to other CB5's.

It would fit nicely in the DD Class B 'Allcomers' race.
