Dinner Dance

So are we gonna have a proper dinner dance this year then or what?

I know the one in 2007 was a giggle, despite this midnight jelly wrestling in the corridors. In fact, that was the best bit!

I think we should try and gauge numbers now, cos lack of interest and commitment from riders was the reason we didn't have one last year.

Any thoughts?

The reason we didn't have a do last year was the chosen venue was to expensive for most.

Otei 23-Aug-2009 16:58

Was it?

Oh, ok....well then we need to find a cheaper one, no? :)

bradders 23-Aug-2009 18:11

without aiming to inflame anything...I take it that its a DD thing? It used to be DSC Dinner Dance....

It's always been a DSC thing as DD is! although in past years its been mainly dd'ers supporting it, so lets get some more of the general club members to participate it's normally a great night.

Murray Mint 23-Aug-2009 19:58

The first Diner Dance was the best by a long way.

Jasper 23-Aug-2009 20:19

Can we have it maybe a little bit further up North too? Donington area?

That sounds OK, good call.

MJS 23-Aug-2009 21:37

It was a club thing when I went... not just DD... but then that was before DD hijacked the club...

Otei 23-Aug-2009 22:10

We could hold it on the bridge that the billy goats gruff trip trapped over...then all the trolls would be right at home.

I'm a racer, I stand (hopefully) to get a championship trophy at the end of this. I enjoyed the 2007 Dinner dance and enjoyed presenting the Steve Hambrook trophy. I'd enjoy it even more if I was recieving a trophy, so yes, I'm looking at this from a mildly selfish perspective.

To be honest, I only ever post in the DD section because it's all I'm interested in. I'm not gonna make any apologies for that.

If other DSC members wanted to come to the dinner dance, then of course that would be fantastic.

There are 3 types of people in this world:

Those who wonder what happened, those who know what happened, and those that make things happen.

Seems to me that the people that race in DD are the ones that make things happen.

If you want to make this happen, let's sort it. If you just want to whinge like a little girl, don't post on this thread.

andys 900ss 23-Aug-2009 23:18

I m sure I spoke to Gordon and/or Cleggy on this one and things have already been put in place to ensure this years do goes ahead. Lets see what they say.

Andy

Otei 23-Aug-2009 23:28

Oh, you Do exist then! :D

Nice one about the Dinner dance...indeed, lets wait and see what is said. Lets just not wait until a week before the event and expext people to drop everything to go.

made it to the wedding then, has to be said, you two looked pimpin...Trace more so than you! ;)

andys 900ss 23-Aug-2009 23:41

Yep, we made it just in time for the speech's 8.30pm.

We finally got home at 2am & my contact lenses were glued to my eyes by then, great night & our group of top mates were there to the very end as usual...

CONGRATULATIONS TO MR & MRS YOUNG

Dinner Dance

I have found a place and have had an initial chat at the start of July, but due to recent events I have not been able to follow up:(

I plan to go over in the next few weeks, it's just north of Bedford by the Autodrome on the A6, it's run by Italian petrolheads and has all the facilities required
http://www.thesharnbrookhotel.com/home_sharnbrook2.html

Have to research extra rooms rates etc as they may not have enough rooms but I think there are other options for sleeping locally, I was there for an Italian day recently and found the ambiance, food, service etc fantastic

But if anyone knows of a suitable place please let me know and I will follow up as all ideas are welcome.

NOvember or January as a date ???

Otei 24-Aug-2009 09:05

Nice one Gordon, looks like a nice place and fabulous that it's owned by petrol heads! Might be a little pricey though?...I guess there will be B&B's available nearby at a slightly lesser rate though.

How's the leg?

Jasper 24-Aug-2009 09:43

Only a 3hr+ drive if i want to go:(Is it possible to look at ANYTHING North of Birmingham!!??

skidlids 24-Aug-2009 09:49

And if that falls through we are welcome to hold the DD end of seson awards at the New Era Shindig in Daventry in February

There are a number of options as to where the Dinner Dance could be held, mostly it is a function of how many wish to come, how big a room and then how many hotel rooms required, so that the participants can just go upstairs to bed and not have to drive anywhere.

As Gordon has stated earlier we have one option over by the M1 we have another 2 near Oxford, that can accomodate 100+ guests/partners, etc.

What would be very useful would be starting a list on here of those who want to come - I will start one this afternoon and we can et things going.

Who's that DD bloke everyone's talking about? Must be some very bad guy to have done so much harm to the club...

seicento 24-Aug-2009 11:14

Hi, Don't want to tread on anyones toes here! I work for an event management company we book hotels for conferences, dinners etc, I would be happy to help fine a venue if you would like,

We can usually sort out a discount with the venue and all you have do is quote a reference,

Supply me with a preferred location, date, likely numbers and a price point and I will happily get you a couple of options,

I don't think you can blame DD for everything that has gone on over the past few years.
I still see the Hants group as one of the most successful regions of the club dispite there heavy involvement in DD both through taking part and supporting it as well as supporting many of the other club activities such as yesterdays Megameet, Cadwell Trackday, rideouts. opendays etc and they will be out in numbers again at Benson this weekend, supported by a FEW from Oxon/Berks the region Benson is situated in.

I don't think DD has killed the club - just moved it's focus away from what it started out as.

DD hasn't killed the club but devisive comments like this can go a long way to alienating the average club member from DD and then it gets seen as sucking the lifeblood (the regions) from the club. The 2007 dinner dance was the last one I attended and I recall that when the Chairman didn't arrive in time to do the after dinner presentations we were all wlecomed to the DesmoDue Dinner Dance by his stand-in, CB!

bradders 24-Aug-2009 13:47

so how many turnmed up at Popham this weekend? how many regularly meet other than at racing? how many post here their ramblings?

not all DD's fault no, I persoanlly agree that is has changed much of the focus of the club and not all for the worse, and there are clearly other issues which have driven peolpe away, but all the 'new blood' seems to be peolpe only here for the rtacing. With many of the old guard moving on, how can that be good for the long term DSC cause?

anyway, back to the thread from under my bridge

although everywhere is a travel for me from the south coast, I'd be happy to travel as far as the midlands, and think it fairer than somewhere furher south, but with overnights etc cost obviosuly becomes part of deciding whether to attend

Yeah, I'll hold my hand up. I can see how my comment "If any other DSC members wanted to come that would be fantastic" should be viewed as alienating them.

When it comes down to the bare bones of it, my post was all about making sure we get a dinner dance.

If you don't expect me to react to posts that have a pop for no reason, you must be mental.

I frankly, don't give a monkeys what anyones overly political view of all this is, just as long as I get to be drunk with my mates and pick up a pot.

Lovely, glad we've cleared that up.

Are you saying that DD is actually what's keeping the club alive?

;)

Sorry, I'll get back to sleep :D

ChrisBushell 24-Aug-2009 14:36

Ok folks,

I have put the promised thread up in DSC topics.

If you want this to happen then start adding your names to a list on that thread and the MT will get it organised!

Otei 24-Aug-2009 17:17

Fank yoooo, Chris! :)

Chris Wood 25-Aug-2009 15:38

Once again.... Easier to cut down a successful part of any club, than it is to make the effort to match it in the areas of the club you are interested in!

Save the same old responses as to why not, heard them all before.

Blame the MT.

Ask not what the club can do for you....blah...blah...blah...

John W 25-Aug-2009 23:07

oh dear.

I started reading this thread hoping to hear details of a christmas do, and the opportunity for me to come meet you nice bunch of people over a beer or 5.

Sadly its another thread full of misunderstandings and snipes at each other. Please can we just move on.

You know its not the DD or anything else thats splitting the club, its all these pointless digs.
Why can't people accept there are those of us that don't race, and those of you that do, and we all like to talk bikes, beer and bollox, in various quantities.

Can someone please pm me details of how to rejoin the club please. I feel the need to show my support once again.

Chris B, I can't find the other thread to add my name to. Is it up yet ?

gordonparker 26-Aug-2009 06:35

PM sent

Ooh, why so touchy :frog:
No bolitics intended Tim, it wasn't your implying that non-DD club members would be welcome to a DesmoDue Dinner Dance that wound me up, it was the comment about only DD members making things happen in the club when, clearly, they don't ;)

;)

trouty 26-Aug-2009 08:16

lol! you lot!

ya know what? us racers (mostly male) spens practically the whole year talking racing, doing racing, fixing crashed racebikes, being at tracks and so on, and with the support of our good ladies... so its only fair that we make a bit of an effort on valentines, right??

well, no! apparently not, as NE's dinnerdance for the 2008 season was on valentines day 2009! thats some real thoughtful planning...!

so a tip to the DSC... dont make it on valentines day... spare a thought for the 'other halves' who suffer us throughout the rest of the year.

John W 26-Aug-2009 13:45

thanks for the link, That explains it.
Because I'm not a paid up member at present I cannot see the post.

It may be a daft suggestion, but why not have these events publicised outside the members only area. If I can't see what the club is up to, I can't see what I'm missing out on, and so whether I want to join or not.

Thanks anyway, I'll be rejoining shortly, so won't be a problem for me but could help attract other non members...

cheers,
John.
