749R exhaust systems? Having just purchased and ran in a 749r I'm about to turn it into a track only bike, the only thing I need to get is an exhaust system. Having done some research it seems that there are only two routes: 1. Buy a new silencer, keep the existing pipes and cut out the cat 2. Buy the full 57mm Race System at £2800.00 Does anybody know of any other options? Supposedly there isn't a 54mm system available for the 749r. I'm looking to race the bike in the future but I'm not convinced that the 57mm system is worth the extra dosh (unless anybody can convince me otherwise, I'd rather spend the money on the engine in the future). |
I'd give John Hackett a ring at Ducati Conventry, for starters. He'll know pretty well what works on the 749R, me thinks. Never mind, if you've already called him. |
DMC, I've cut the cats out of the front link pipe on 2 x 749R's already, both owners are happy with the results - but I don't believe either bike has been dyno'd before or after. Audibly, the bikes IMHO sound awesome and different from other termi'd 749/999's. It's a bit of a fiddle (the alignment needs to be perfect for re-assembly), but there's nothing difficult about it. You wouldn't have bought the bike from Glasgow, would you? Cheers! Scott |
isnt there a cat in the main box as well??? i thought this was the resion that the 999r comes with a new box and lying cylinder pipe but i wouldnt buy a 57ti system from termi just yet as between myself and my neighbour we´ve broken 7 yes 7 end boxes this year and at €2000 or so a throw, i think an answer from ducati is required before i tell anyone to buy these systems. a mate has the 54mm system but with the stainless end box and the unit was much more stable compared to the Ti unit which was flexing around the rear mounting bolt ............ we will see i guess |
Nathan, If you read the original posting again mate Quote:
This is exactly what the owners of the 2 other 749R's that I know have done and removed the cat. Cheers! Scott |
oopps yea your right----:P but what end boxes are they buying then, i guess non termi or cat free from the 999r ? |
Nathan, Both 749R's I've helped along now have Termi' race cans fitted, I'm not sure what the part number is but I guess I could find out. They sound great too. And they haven't had any problems like those you have experienced with the big bore system - are Ducati having your old silencers returned to them for analysis? Cheers! Scott |
Techie question here i know DMC is doing it for track bikes but on road bikes ie:the newer dukes with cats S4R 749 999 multistrudel when you remove these is it an mot failure? as the cat is on the bike when bought new ! if you remove the cats on cars to fit a free flowing exhaust etc it will fail the mot are bikes the same ??? |
scott, all the end boxes are waiting to be inspected by the tech boss of ducati Germany but the good news is that my mates bike has sheared the manifold from the standing cylinder ...... oh and broken 2 springs that you can only get as a set .... for x amount of € |
Nige - I'm sure you'll find that catalytic convertors are not yet required for motorcycles in the UK - it's a pro-active approach by the manufacturers fitting these already - if anyone knows better, please feel free to correct me! Nathan - any picures of the sheared manifold? I remember seeing the cracked rear silencer, that was ages ago though - any chance you could re-post it? Or, mail it to me direct here Cheers! Scott |
ill get a few pics done tomorrow as ive got to fit the new part before sunday as were off to Oschersleben |
Hi Scottch Yes, I bought if from Ducati Glasgow last week. Took the day off work today and did four hundred miles to get it run in. I'm just going to go with the pipe cutting option, I know Martin and Bill's bikes having been running sweet since they were done. When do you get your new 999R. (It's a small world with a large grapevine). |
DMC, You'll be David then! Have you listened to Martins or Bills bikes? They sound fantastic, but are somehow different to bikes with the full termi system. 400 miles??? You're keen mate - when's the bike going on the dyno? Haven't you got the race kit on order? My R might be along sometime soon, perhaps early July - not in any real rush though. Cheers! Scott |
Yes Scottch, me be David! I was listening to Martins and Bills bikes at Knockhill, I'm looking forward to having that sort or roar. The poor thing sounds so stifled just now. I had the racekit on order, but I'm going to leave it for just now. My mate spoke to someone at Monstermob for me and they've suggested cheaper, easier ways to safely make an extra few BHP. I want need it this year, only next year if I start racing her. I'm going to get her on the dyno when the exhast is on, probably in two weeks. cheers David. |
Dave, Gimme a shout next time you're in the shop, or get my number from Martin mate - we'll get things organised for your chop job. It'll be interesting to see the feedback from the dyno session, before and after the chop. Cheers! Scott |
rear exhaust manifold well i got the exhaust off and changed the rear manifold for a new one under garantie, nice clean break around the weld ,i must admit a compleate nightmare to refit , lots of swearing... and found that the bike had spat the C.O. plug out as well on the front pipe ,these things are never easy......... well im off to Oschersleben after the GP so i hope the bike will be in ok |
Nathan, Any pics of the cracked rear silencer? Cheers! Scott |
heres one |
Nathan, On the bike that has sheared the rear manifold, how tight was the exhaust to fit? The pipe looks like it has stress fractured, but it's hard to tell from the photo's alone. The silencer, even though it's titanium, could be easily repaired, but that's not what you paid all that moolah for ;) Looks like it just needs beefed up to me. Has anyone experienced these problems on other exhaust systems?? Cheers! Scott |
Went to jhp yesterday to collect my 749r and after talking to John i decided after comparing both termi and leo vinci systems we are going with the latter. The quality was in a different league, welds are beautifull ,brackets much more substantial and the billet mounting on the silencer is to die for! Its 57mm (they do 54)and is exactly the same as Lanzi used last year. Total cost will be less than the termi, even with the cost of the PC111 and modifing the pipes to clear the new swingarm. John is doing before and after dyno readings so i will report back when i pick her up. Butch |
Is this a full system, or just an end can ? With the Leo Vinci do you use just a powercommander or is there still a replacement ECU ? You didn't happen to get the price for a 54mm system :D Rob |
Answer for Electric sheep, Ithe leo vinci is a full system and does require a powercommander to be fitted(so long as you have the latest ECU fitted). Cost is £1600 +vat for the 54mm and £1800 +vat for the 57mm. You will also have to add the cost of altering the pipes to clear the swingarm and to have the PC111 fitted and set up(about £5-600). The 54mm is quite ok if you are not going any further in the future but well worth spending the extra £200 if you want to go the cam and head route later on (as i do). hope this helps Butch |
exhaust 57Ti sorry its late .. the pic of the rear Ti box just heard from ducati today that all the parts are to be replaced for new parts, including another heat shield and a rear subframe as its a little cooked from the exhaust ........ |
May be bit of a dumb question but why would'nt a standard up grade 749/999 termi system not fit and would the difference in power if any be noticeable to the very expensive alternative? I look forward to your expert technical views |

unfortunately because of the swing arm , as I have just found out. I've been running my 749R with the silencer from a 749S assymetric termi system and the standard pipes , when using this system the rear pipe remains standard anyway and you fit a new fronmt pipe with no cat , the 749S front pipe will not fit the R because of the deep sump engine. The new front pipe from a 999S (also deep sump) arrived yesterday and I tried fitting it last night only to find that it fouls on the swing arm :( , so it looks like my options are : New front pipe from an assymetric system for an 04 999R Buy a standard 749R front pipe and get Scottch to cut the cat out Just get Scottch to cut the front pipe I have and sort something out come first MOT time ..................pass me the phone :sing: |

or find a good panel beater with a big hammer..............it has been known. |
Butch, when you get your Leo Vince system back I'd love to hear your opinion on the sound (i.e. compared to Termi's). From what I've seen I think I may be getting the LeoVince for my 749S when they're available. Thanks Quote:

I HAVE TERM. HALF SYS. AND PC3 CUSTOM MAP AND GET 114.1 ON DYNOJET DYNO. I HAVE ORDERED 57MM + TIT. SLNCER. AND WILL POST RESULTS WHEN INSTALLED AND MAPPED. |
We are patiently waiting for anything here in the states. Nothing is available yet to fit the new swing arm like on my '05 749s...but they say sometime soon. One shop has had them on order since last November. I've actually already placed an order for the full 54mm system. It's gonna be steel because of the price, but the dealers I shopped at said the Ti systems are a long way behind the steel ones as far as coming here. This set up here will also come with the new ECU. [Edited on 17-9-2005 by galaxy] |
ive had both systems on mt r, the slip on can option was very good, scottch cut out the cat in the down pipe ( very good job too) ,this option is much cheaper & does the job. 57mm system looks great on the bike but is it worth £2000+? for me, no. |
the ducati part nos. for the silencers are as follows: s/s silencer...96112403b tit. silencer...96113203b carbon heat guard...96959503b chk w/ your local dealer for fitment, if they act dumb, post any questions and ill try to help. if you ask them for a copy of the access. cat. 2005 you can part out the ex. systems. pgs.63-74 but avail. is oft an issue. hope this helps.................................. |
Don't know if it's of any use to anyone here, but I bought a 749 Termignoni asymetric kit from ebay a few months back (Termignoni can, front downpipe, carbon can heat shield and 'chip'). for my 749R.Once recieved,I realised it wont fit because of the 'deep sump' so,I then bought a 749R 'cat-free' front downpipe with the idea of using this with the rest of the asymetric kit.Basically,I now no longer have a need for any of it,so I'm selling it!If anyone is interested, please u2u me with your offers and maybe we can have a deal.... |
Spooky.... Within 10 mins of posting this,I have sold the 'R' downpipe on ebay!! The rest is still available tho' !!:bouncy: |
just to add my bit i bought the leo vince 57mm ti system back in july and must say it was worth every penny and before anyone says the word loaded i can assure u i aint and saved hard for it, is it worth £2500? u bet it is, the quality is exellent the welds, the fit and the whole pakage with fittings is spot on. i fitted it myself and it only took aprox 3 hours with no props of trying to shoe horn it in just simply start from the front and work your way back, then when you start it up oh my god it actually sounds identicle to the factory dukes, i fitted the power comander and had it dyno,d result is 118bhp at the back wheel and a heap more tourqe which is really noticeable on the road. on the the road the bike revs even quicker than it did before and thats hard to beat so anyone out there if u can get a leo vince 57ti it is worth every penny. |
I think I might be able to help. Try this thread. I posted pictures and dyno charts of our HPE systems, comparing them with Termi's. http://www.ducatisportingclub.com/xm...3516#pid117840 They are available in 50/55/57 mm sizes and in Stainless/Inconel and Inconel/Inconel. From £1450 plus VAT to £2150 plus VAT! Sandbar http://www.sandbarcomposites.co.uk . |
ijust isnt. the termy 57 sys. w/ tit. silencer and the baseline run was 119.2 the map falls very rich at the low end. i will post results after i custom map. |
i custom mapped my 05 749r w full 57 mm term. sys yesterday results were 122.65 h.p. 62.12 ft # torque. so much for worrying about the cost.:burn: |
