750ss Cafe Racer seat unit

Just got the fibreglass kit

Gonna make me a seat unit

Should be fun!!

skidlids 07-Dec-2011 22:35

Plenty of ventilation required

Update 21 Dec 2011

So, I bought some florist foam, made a base and stuck the foam onto the board, making sure it was plenty big enough

The foam is very easy to cut and sand with the final shap looking like this:

My tank was at the powdercoaters at this time so I had to stop until I could see that they worked together

Next job is some fibreglassing

bradders 21-Dec-2011 18:16

you're giving me ideas......

flatline 21-Dec-2011 20:02

Ha ha:lol:   gotcha

What are you thinking of?

bradders 21-Dec-2011 21:49

similar for my race bike. Something very light, small and very light...did I mention light?!

Have you got the FG kit yet? The Carbon kits look good and not huge amounts more cost, and process looks the same. Youtube 'make carbon'

That looks easy

We should have filmed ourselves making pre preg CF bits in my mates Barn back in the mid 90s, using an old electric oven that had been extended with some steel sheet and a Edwards Rotary Vac pump
Best bit to come out of it was a complete CF subframe come seat unit for my mates original Fireblade.

flatline 30-Dec-2011 13:58

There is no mention of any ovens in the videos

Seems to be the same as fibreglass but no filler can be used

skidlids 30-Dec-2011 15:20

They will be using Wet Lay rather than Pre preg then

bradders 30-Dec-2011 21:25

yep exactly like f'glass.

Would be good to start a thread buddy

So, the seat unit was built, which proved I can do it.

It also allowed me to look at what can be changed

I decided I want the seat to sit on top of the frame rather than hanging down over the side of it, so I built another one

This time I covered the plug in silver tape as silver foil is a bit loose

I am now playing about with some different colour schemes

Here are some photos of the build and the first go at the colours

After a lot of sanding and filling

I reckon the white stripe is too wide and the red and green stripes are too narrow

I will probably make another seat unit and paint it black with the red, white and green stripes

Then make a decision............

Well done!

If it was a bit more teardrop shaped at the rear it would be classic old style ducati but I guess that's not really the idea?

Keep on doing so well and you might be getting requests ;)

flatline 11-Mar-2012 08:44

Had one already

Thanks for your comments
