Oil consumption 996 2002 B I hadnt checked the oil for some time and I went for a bit of a blast last Sunday, the oil light began to flicker on when I gave it some so I popped back home and put in 500ml to just below full. Today been out for a 250 mile hammering and put in another 500ml albeit to the full mark. Mates riding behind said they couldn't see any oil smoke so I suppose on 25,000 miles the oil consumption is acceptable for a hard-ridden bike? Any comments? |
top up 1L!! seems very very high oil consumption |
Its now you need to keep an eye on cunsumption. You have now added 1L and the oil is to the max level. There is no data before that, so you cannot confirm what the consumption has been. Note your current mileage with max oil and work from there. It cannot be said you have high oil consumption yet, as you need to baseline the level and mileage. |

Exactly. The oil pressure switch can go, giving false lights, but you have to know what level you started at before you can know what the consumption is. |
OK I'll check it same position each time and record the mileage. Only have standard Termi aluminium cans but sounds fantastic to me when you pin the throttle. S'pose its gonna be greedy on oil with big throttle openings, high revs. But I can't help it. |
What brand and grade of oil are you using, 10W40 is a bit thin for some 996s that I know of |
Just topping up with Halfords 10W40 although I have 4L of Castrol ready for an oil change soon. Do you suggest thicker oil? |
Yep 15W50 as recommended in the older manuals before Ducati switched to using Shell |

Aye, 15/50 every time: http://www.sigmaperformance.com/rockers.html |
Anyone recommend Rock Oil? |

Not Me I prefer Silkolene and if thats not available I use Motul |
Baines Racing use Rock Oil, and Sigma used to recommend it: http://www.sigmaperformance.com/rockers.html So I assume it's ok! |

Hello Magna, I used 10W40 in my 916 engined MonsterS4, and it drank oil...... The bike had around 10k miles on the clock. Swapped to 15W50 (Motul 300V is good) and oil consumption had abated. 10W40 is too thin when pushing hard. I have a 2000 996Bip with 50mm termis and always use 15W50 fully synthetic (I use Motul 300V or Mobil 1 fully synthetic). Hope this helps. Best regards, Jame |
have to say ive always used a good 10/40 on my 748,s never had a problem? |
Motul 300V, 15W50 for me :D Chris:burn: |
Just ordered some Rock Oil 15W50, good price from Demon Tweeks. I'll see how it goes. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2209615776...ht_1355wt_1187 |
OK since the Rock Oil went in, I have done one decent ride. Checked the oil losses and its used 220ml on a ride of only 100 miles so I need some more data before saying there is no difference yet. |
Try to keep the conditions when checking the same to. Lifting the bike onto a paddock stand, tipping the engine forward, will move the oil level..... If you're down to measuring 220ml.... then you need to make sure the bike is in the same spot, on/off paddock stand (i'd measure on one as the bike will be vertical), i'd check stone cold as the oil will take a while to run back to the sump fully...etc. Does sound a little excessive and the thicker oil will defo help. It might be cured but just check under the same conditions ;) |
what?! 220ml in a hundred miles?! I rarely top up between services, even on my old 748 and 916sps, or any Ducati between (monsters, numpty, 848) used to have to when I had a fireblade and ST2 needed a small amount just before service time....but that much in 100 miles?! amazed |
Maybe its a user? I remember my 05 Passat - had it from new and used 1L/1000 miles. BMW R1100S - another big twin, that used oil. |

Ditto that. Rarely if ever needed to top up between annual services - ok, low mileage in that time, maybe 2k, but very little reduction. |

Hello Manga, Highly recommend Motul 300v or Mobil1 fully synthetic, 15W/50. I've always ran 15/50 in my 996 and 916 engined Monster S4. Best regards, James |
