748R and 748RS

Hi guys,
A rather novice question for you and hope you can help me out. What is the difference between 748r and 748rs? In the beginning I was thinking about 749R / MV. But due to budget problem, I found two 748R pretty appealing as well. the more I look at them, the more I fall in love...
Am I back stepping??
thanks
Jack

typer77 06-Jul-2004 17:34

Wow!! Beautiful!! I wish I can find one here in HK....

antonye 06-Jul-2004 17:47

I've been trying to find a decent dash (as an investment for all future bikes too) for ages but never found anything either worth buying or cheap enough not to sell the kids for!

That sure is one sweet machine though. Any ideas of cost anyone?

Can't be cheap...

The dash and setup on the 998RS looks sweet as well:

Is it? It's taken from the 998RS for sale on the link Mogwai posted:

Felix 06-Jul-2004 18:07

Not the same bike but the same kind of bike.

Guido 06-Jul-2004 22:00

Typer - 748RS is pushing out about 120bhp Vs 105bhp on the 748R

Antonye - I reckon about 10k-13k for a 748RS if you can get your hands on one.

I think the main difference you need to know is:

748R - a top of the range road bike with lights, mirrors etc

748RS - a customer factory race bike purely for racing with no lights, mirrors etc

Felix 06-Jul-2004 23:11

Yeah, and no V5 and a service interval of one weekend at a horrendous cost!

Ant, I've spent quite a bit of time looking at dash options. What would you want in a decent dash? Have you looked at these:

Translogic Micro Dash unfortunately not yet available and no data logging

MyChron 3 Dash

Interested in your feedback/thoughts.

antonye 07-Jul-2004 15:26

I've seen the Translogic stuff before, but they're definitely too small as I would want this to replace the full set of clocks.

The Magnetti Marelli one in the pics above would be my ideal choice, but obviously they cost plenty. I liked the clocks on the Honda SP1/2 and also the Aprilia (I think) as they have a decent mix of digital and analogue.

I'd mainly want to replace the standard functions - speedo, tacho, lights, temp - and maybe have extra functions like laptime, voltage, fuel, etc.

antonye 07-Jul-2004 15:30

The MyChrom looks good, dunno about price as it hasn't arrived yet, but I don't know about the readouts it has.

We can't be that far away from using small TFT/LCD panels wired up so that the whole thing is completely customiseable... you could specify which indicators you want and place them where you like on the screen. You can change the display type between analogue and digital, and select from several different styles. Now that would be cool!

It might be closer than you think! ;);)

Well I would hope so, the technology is certainly there so it's just down to the right people putting it into practise.

...and if you know of any company seeking to test any commercial systems, I'd be more than happy to help!

There was a 748RS for sale in Riders in Bristol when I was in there the other week. It may have gone by now.

skidlids 07-Jul-2004 23:09

i think my mate Simon may still have his Ex DFX 748RS for sale I will see him at Thruxton at the weekend and find out.

http://ducatisportingclub.com/xmb/vi...=8852#pid71304

James Thompson has a very nice Ex NCR 748RS with all the trick dash etc.

My own 748RS now houses a 998 engine and is road registered, which was done when it still had the RS engine in it

typer77 15-Jul-2004 17:12

how much was the 748R when it was new on the showroom floor?

Guido 15-Jul-2004 18:17

Typer,

My 2001 748R had a £10,900 list price when new.

Thank you Guildo. there are two in HK and they are both for sale. One is stock (2001) asking for about 8000 pds. The other one is 2002 bike with Ohlins all around (steering damper) Vee Two did the mapping with Termi 57mm; Ti Pulleys; engine bluprinted/balanced by a shop in England. He wants 8500 pds for it w/ ONLY 500 km. This bike had one track event....
Then I am also thinking about just getting the 749R or 999S. Can't decide...
