Aw! Hope it survived the drying out in the microwave session!

Paul James 07-Jul-2004 21:16

Don't worry about the shyness CK, I've been a fellow sufferer all my life, just have to put on a brave face and try to mingle.:)

webbyc 07-Jul-2004 21:55

Not actually seen it yet, but understand that its repeated at 10. Firstly, as the leader of the ride, I apologise if there is any embarassment to the club. Secondly, considering that a number of offences may have been committed, to only get a slap on the wrist about the numberplate was surprising. Do you not think that this may be a publicity exercise to countenance the usage of speed cameras and speed traps?

Nigel C 07-Jul-2004 22:19

looks like it was filmed on the A29 obviously!(the bikes weaving thru the traffic and erm our lot ).
on the road from bury hill to pulborough thru Amberly (the bike crossing the white lines) and at bury hill car park itself

electricsheep 07-Jul-2004 23:49

It did nor seem to be in the 10 news broadcast. At least not here in East Angular

Mutters 08-Jul-2004 00:40

Its on this page http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/

under the Video choice bit

webbyc 08-Jul-2004 08:28

Couldn't find it they must have taken it off!!!

Eamonn 08-Jul-2004 09:00

Couldn't find the clip either - it's obvioiusly not that important to the BBC any more.....

Considering that no-one was pulled for speeding and according to Lizzie, "... the bobbies didn't seem in the slighest concerned about our speeds..." - it leads me to the conclusion that the BBC wanted some recent footage of modern bikes and so collaborated with the police in getting some video to use.

Unfortunately the general public who would have seen the article will never know that the riders on film were not prosecuted for any speeding offences :o

Derek 08-Jul-2004 13:23

I didn't see the footage last night but this is not the first swipe at bikers by the BBC in recent weeks. What grudge against us have the BBC got? They have a massive media influence and one such article by them does our cause no good at all. This is just another part of the current wind up to more anti-motorcycle legislation.

AK 08-Jul-2004 13:36

When contacted said Beeb last night, I told them how aggrived I was, to be pictured on prime time TV (without my permission) in a video footage clip - which was taken from an event that had nothing to do with speeding. The film footage was misrepresented, and taken out of context.
There were not even any speed cameras present - and the filming we were told was for a ministry training video - and not for public edification.
I also accused them of blatant over-hype - and have now received an apology from them today - and a letter will follow, so I am told.

C:mad:

kwikbitch 08-Jul-2004 13:42

Good for you Charlotte...Can you scan it in and let us have a look at their apology...?
Mind you damage has already been done I guess...:(

psychlist 08-Jul-2004 13:50

No doubt the apology will be given front page publicity on their website and equally high footing on the 6 o'clock news tonight!?!

Ray 08-Jul-2004 13:57

What can the biking community do to improve their press?

It's all very well getting hot under the collar about it but we should be doing something to get some positive publicity.

OK there are yer usual easter egg runs, riders for health days, but what else can we do to show that we are not all speeding psychopaths, well not all of the time anyway??!!

Ray.

lizzie 08-Jul-2004 15:00

Damn, wish I'd seen it. Did they show Michael wearing his DSC t-shirt :o
Thanks for the message Charlotte, I just got home in time to watch the 10 o'clock news but no joy. Looking forward to a frame-by-frame account of the piece next time I meet anyone who saw it.

BTW - obviously the 6 o'clock news isn't watched by many of us, so maybe not by many at all, so maybe not too much harm done!

difficult one Ray - who says we can do anything?? All we can hope is that the media have another target soon......but as they have portrayed negative images of bikes for 50 years, I won't hold my breath!

And I dont think speeding nutters are the probelm - its people like us (me, dont know about you) who have loud cans and SOUND like we are speeding. 40 thru a village in 4th rather 30 in 1st will not cause as much problem, hence why complaints are not as prfelent for cars which often go as fast or faster.

The media, especially the BBC, are past masters of misrepresentation. I saw a documentary about their coverage of the miner's strike quite a few years back. The coverage depicted the strikers lobbing stones, etc at the police and the police launching a horseback charge in response. The reality of the situation though was that the police had charged first, and the miners responded. A subtle manipulation of events, and their effect on the viewer, I thought.

Absolutely. And it's for this kind of reason I will not fit noisy pipes - I want to retain as low a profile as possible, so far as complaints are concerned, and I'm yet to be convinced of the argument that extra-loud pipes save lives.

webbyc 08-Jul-2004 20:42

Also the guy filming took a lot of close-ups of my bike particularly the DSc sticker on the screen!!! As we appeared on the beeb does that mean we're entitled to some sort of fees?

Well done Charlotte, are we all in for some form of compo payout?

Redsps 09-Jul-2004 00:42

webby, I know how we all like the excusivity of the DSC, but prime time telly, this is probably stretching things a bit far mate.

But seriously, I hav'nt seen the said article yet, but having read the postings, totally agree you all.The Beeb and Co were well out of order here, there must surley be some kind of recourse here against the beeb and Co.

Keep up the good work mate.

Red..
