Probably only applicable to those of a certain age but ..... how many of you regarded yourselves as being part of a "youth cult" when you were younger?

In the late 70's and early eighties it seemed like you had to be "something"!!

I've listed as many as I can think of but would be happy to add any I've missed.

Some pictures would be nice too.

Oh ....... and I was well into punk from about 14 until my early 20s.

and just to encourage a few pics ... one of me in my punk rock days ... no laughing now!

Well I didn't vote because I have music from more than a couple of those genre's but ...

Late 70's I kind of hung around home a lot used to nick out for half the day etc towards the end of that period ... and then my glory moment was in early 1981 when I started Year 1 at primary school :lol: :D

But if you are referring to what you listened to in your teens then as I was playing an awful lot of basketball it had to be Ice T, NWA, Ice Cube, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, LL Cool J, Public Enemy etc etc ... then when I joined the Army .. Metallica, G 'n' R, Pantera, and mellowed a bit into what was first called 'alternative' Green Day et al, and later renamed Indie ... and then Pink Floyd and a few others ...

i also listened to a lot of different stuff as a kid. the biggest influence for my era (late 70's to early eighties) though was probably NWOBHM. i find a lot of it unlistenable now, but still put on a disc from Lemmy and the boys occasionally . . . . also love early punk, ie Pistols, Penetration etc etc

then came shoegazer, electronica etc etc and now rockabilly, psychobilly, garage punk . . . .

still remember biff and the boys supporting motorhead on the overkill (or was it bomber?) tour at the cambridge corn exchange . . . can't believe they're still going, they looked a bit past it in '80!

i served with 1st Fd Sqn RE, I Troop 3 RHA, 52 Bty 45 RA, and FRG 3 Fd Wksps

loved every minute of it (no really, my specs are not rose tinted ;) )

I really enjoyed the first 5 years especially the first 3 but after that it was tedious, petty and small minded. That could have bene my unit but to some extent it was Corps because I was working in IT as an electronics techniician and they wouldn't let me transfer to IT fulltime. So I got out despite being recently promoted etc ... they were ****ed!! Told me I'd never earn more money 'on the outside' etc ...

Oh well :D

Am definately NOT posting punk pics up, of skinny kid with pink mohican:o:o - this all went though, when I got my 2nd bike - as mohican was a bu**er to keep properly, with taking helmet on & off......:lol: looking at pics - my mum must have gone nuts:o but still have Pistols records under the stairs here....they dont get played now, but do move house each time:D

Next phase of 'heavy metal bike bird' stayed a while - but didnt quite look righteous on my bike (GS750) with the high heels/platforms I needed to touch the ground with (the things we did when younger eh?). Music still fondly remembered - Blue Oyster Cult, Sabbath, White Snake, Motorhead.....

Now after several metamorphosis' over the years - and there are a few years in between; am just a 'normal' bike riding person.... I think?:puzzled:

early 80`s went with load of mates to see quadrophenia at the flicks.....within a week we were all riding scooters, wearing parkers, two tone suits and loafers, the second coming of the mods had arrived and i loved every minute of it...all night parties, birds, booze, illegal substances and fist fights with the rockers.....ahhh...those were the days !!

I've got a TV200 ..... there's a pic on another thread, the one about bike mags I think.

The term refers to Signals guy's who carried the radio back-packs in the WW2, they were always leaking acid.......hence having a scaley back!

I did 7 years with the Royal Signals 82-89, I also found the fun wore off (having a d**k head in charge never helps).

For the first 2 months of training never a night went past without the Human League Dare album being played. Now Phil had a proper hair style don't you think?

Used to be a skinhead and went underage drinking in the pub where my older brother and the rest of the bike lads went. He would either ignore me if i was lucky or give me a good kicking if i was unlucky.

Eventually got into the bikes when i went to Scarborough for the races on weekend, 1 skinhead with about 20 bikers from the Norseman in Peterlee, bit of an odd mixture in those days.(1970's)

Instant convert to biking, never got hair cut again (until it started to fall out) all skinhead mates thought i'd lost the plot.

Mods and Rockers eh! Brighton seafront looking for mods to chase and hiding under the pier from the police-those were the days!!:lol:
I used to love screaming my DBD34 Goldstar past the flat out mods in 1st at an indicated 80mph and then changing up 3 gears-silly really-but it used to make me chuckle.:devil:
As to music, well rock and roll obviously, but also blues, Rolling Stones, Kinks, and then Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Steppenwolf,, Jucy Lucy, Cream, Joe Cocker, Canned Heat, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple-the list goes on and on. First saw the Stones live at Romford Odeon in 1963-they were warm up band for Freddie and the Dreamers-god I really am old!:lol:

1978,The Clash at the Peterborough Wirrina.I think its still the most electrifying concert I've ever been to.
Sorry no pics of my bleached blonde hair,bondage jeans and "destroy" t-shirt.(Not a pretty sight!:D)

Oh,and the bike I owned at the time,.....Triumph Bonneville 750 (US spec).

I'm a bit worried that there are 3 ex new romantics here! Crash helemets must play havoc with those floppy fringes.

Wasn't much choice but be labelled a rocker or greaser in my youth as I rode bikes and wore a leather jacket.

Liked the Who and most of the ones Monty listed (although I'm much younger than him :P), had a rake of British bikes culminating in a rather quick Triton (that's a Norton featherbed frame with Triumph engine to you young un's). Didn't like all the silly fighting that went on but it seemed mandatory for some dippy skinhead gang to attack us if they were outnumbering us at least five to one.

Seem to recall that there were "smoothies" as well, these were kids who could borrow daddy's car to drive around impressing the girlies at the weekend.

Hmm... lack of bikes in my youth, on accounts of my folks banning them from even being mentioned in the house!! Still, got there in the end--even took my mum out on the back of a borrowed zzr weekend just gone :)

But for those of a certain age, Lloyd Cole at the UEA LCR, Simple Minds at Milton Keynes, Queen at Knebworth sort of sums up my early days. Therapy at Norwich Waterfront goes down as one of the best gigs of all time. Saw Oasis in the US and they were on top form. Missed Nirvana though and always regret it.... :(

Best gig for me ........ UK Subs @ Portsmouth Locarno 1980. Half the crowd on the stage.

Other good ones .... Jam in '79 @ Portsmouth Guildhall, Damned & SLF both in '80 @ Southampton Gaumant

But I missed The Clash in '79 @ Portsmouth Guildhall. As I remember I couldn't afford the £3.50 for the ticket!! I was only 14 though.

What a place the Wirrina was. Always remember roller skating there...........great place to meet the girls when I was 15.

But...........................gotta say the Clash were good but, in my book, were eclipsed the following year by the Stranglers ........... what a gig that was :o:o

A little admission........... :D:D the first band I ever saw was Mott the Hoople at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1973. The support band were pretty good but a bit weird, 'specially the lead singer. My mate thought they were crap but I thought they'd go places cos I loved their closing number. They were called "Queen" of all things and they closed their short set with a fantastic song titled 'Seven Seas of Rhye'.

Dunno what ever happened to them after that...........disappeared without trace I think ;)

I actually co-run one of the do's over there, coincidentally called Hipshaker too ( info http://www.hipshaker.co.uk )... its at the Ryde Castle Hotel. Definitely meet up for a beer at some point ..... perhaps not talk bikes too loudly in the Ludd though;)
