Tech: Web space needed Hi All, Just wondering if anyone has a 50-500Mb of web space available for putting Duke pictures on. It'd be nice to be able to put together proper web pages of rideouts/bikes/trackdays without having to worry too much about file sizes. I could also put up hints and tips for making web pages/compressing images/etc for others to do likewise. I've been in touch with my website host but they want an extra £50/year for 50Mb!!:lol::lol: Cheers, Ali |
For that amount of space dude, you're gonna have to pay :) I'm sure there's not many people with that much space kicking around spare. |
You could always host your own ... if you have broadband. Cheaper but could be a headache depending on what web server you choose to run. This is of course if you already have the appropriate kit such as h/w firewall solution with SPI, capable of NAT etc .... (If these acronyms mean nothing to you then there might be a bit more reading involved if you wanted to host it yourself!) Having said that my firewall doesn't have SPI so you don't really need it ... I've just started going down this road at home by downloading apache 2.0 and setting her up (I'm at work all you IP thieves and port scanners so you can't get me, and I haven't opened my firewall at home yet so settle down!) and started the reading process. I have 180GB of space at home so it makes sense ;) Ok, so I just got out of a design workshop so I was feeling kind of geeky .. I'll get me anorak .... [Edited on 15-7-2004 by tp-996] |
tp, I can highly recommend you get PHPdev from http://www.firepages.com.au/ It will install Apache, PHP, mySQL etc in a few easy steps :) |
No firewall, not much space, and my PC is also my TV/completely-legal-film-downloading service, so hosting at home might be tricky.... Having said that it'd give me good reason to: a) Buy a new PC b) Buy a wireless network so it can live in the attic c) Buy a laptop so I can administer it from my sofa d) Get a life and just pay the extra £50.... This is one of those expenses that I have enormous difficulty in justifying to the missus (unlike trackdays/billet alloy!). It just drives me nuts that a 180Gb drive costs about the same as fun size kit kat, but the same space for web-hosting costs more than 5-bed house in Mayfair.:mad: Cheers for the info. I'll know where to come when I need a firewall setting up:) Ali |

Thanks Desmondo, I'll check it out. I've got apache installed and I've just been reading on the modules etc - I really only want to host piccies etc for the family in Oz so they know what we're up to ... But then these things get legs ... and you end up doing all sorts of crud with them I suppose ... Can anyone recommend an E-Mail server to run at home? I was thinking of buying a domain name and having an MX record to call my own :D I've got a copy of merak mail server at the moment but I don't know anything about it ... I could get a copy of Exchange though (seeing as I do Exchange design ....) after working with MS products for 8 years or so I was kind of planning on avoiding them ... Quote:
Yeah I know, I've just rebuilt mine at home (hence the renewed enthusiasm for all things geeky) and put a new 120GB drive in it (2x60GB in a RAID 1 hosting the OS and app installations so I don't have to rebuild it again next time a disk decides to pack it in and a 120GB disk for everything else ..) for £57 TP [Edited on 15-7-2004 by tp-996] |
It's the bandwith that costs the money Ali, however, I'm looking in to something for you :) |

WTF did you just say? :puzzled: |
Don't worry Flanker, go back to sleep  |
Bitch :frog: |
Thanks Desmondo :) I'm not convinced by the bandwidth argument though.... The amount of space is only vaguely linked to bandwith useage, and the majority of providers give high ceilings for usage vs space (eg:5gb/month for 100mb space). I'd like to think that they're all scum, and that space, bandwidth and 10Gbit broadband should be free for all! Vive la Revolution!! Unfortuantely that's not the case.... I just checked back with my provider, what they're actually offering is 25Mb at $132/yr.:mad::mad::mad::mad: I've been with them for 10 years now because they own my family domain name. Might be time for deed poll.:) Ali Ducati [Edited on 15-7-2004 by ali] |
I get 10Gb per month and UNLIMITED disk space through my provider, for £8+VAT per month. You also get a free .co.uk domain name when you join, unlimited email accounts, unlimited FTP transfer (not part of your bandwidth allocation), choice of PHP or ASP, MySQL, Perl, no restrictions on the stuff you run, SSL connection, etc, etc. http://www.cheapnet.co.uk/ and tell them ECom-Secure sent you ;) |
Oh, and extra 10Gb of bandwidth is only £10 per month as well... |
Ali, you've got U2U |
I have space, quite a bit, no idea how much space, costs me about tenner a month. Helpful? :frog: |
1,500 MB web space 10 GB/month bandwidth To be helpful! |

It was nerdese - the babelfish site might help? :saint: |
Thanks flanker. Looks like Desmondo is sorting out a domain and space which it top-bloody-notch of the fella.:D If for some bizarre reason it doesn't work out I'll be in touch. I love this board. :) Ali |

Indeed, i was more indicating at Antonye's prefered back door entry..... |
Hell, even I don't want to know about that :o  |
Don't know what you're on about. When I'm in me leathers I often leave the backdoor wide open. I prefer my friends to use the back door as it makes less mess for the missus to clear up.....:lol: |
Look here How we found out..... |
Mmmmm, now I'm worried. I've been to his house too, I wondered what the bottle of chloroform was for :o |
