Knee Sliders Ok. I have Dainese leathers. I've been told there's nowhere to put knee sliders on them. I don't want to look a burk if I go to buy some. I've been lookin at Rattlers pics with knee down (amongst others) and I'm convinced I could get my knee down. After all, I get my arse of the seat easily enough, so why not stick my knee out? I've already been tempted. However, don't want to lose knee caps. Where should I go for proper advice, within striking distance of North Herts.? :puzzled: |

You get the patches and you can have a set of my sliders (only Frank Thomas ones mind), 6 years of racing and I still can't scrape them on the ground unless its closely followed by my shoulder and arse. |
Is it really that difficult? Well, there's a challenge. When I did my first track day, on Daytona T595, 5 years ago, and my face was inches from the tarmac, it was like flying through clouds. Unbelievable. On the the Ducati, I didn't get so low but "the fit" is perfect. The difference between the two is like 'mere acquaintance' vs. 'family'. I KNOW I can do it on this bike! And I'm only a 2 trackday babe. How confident is that!!!!:devil: |
Its just difficult for me, 30" inside leg and pinned together, having raised pegs probably doesn't help but I can scrape them at a couple of corners at Donington, Druids hairpin at Brands and Hatchets hairpin at Pembrey, don't think the bike is going to lean over any futher than that. I'll keep working on it as I see it as another weapon in the racing armoury. |
Ok. My inside leg is 30". Raised pegs, why??? Scarey to get sparks on corners? I understand that. Looks good for photos, no doubt, and you obviously have buckets more experience than I do, and frankly, as a bloke, more bottle, but the offer of Frank Thomas knee sliders - I accept - are you in the vicinity of Donnngton on 25th? I need them for Snetterton on 1st August. Otherwise will purchase (f*** the xpense!) |
Lesson 2: Looks good ruth, but skids has prob got fixed pegs rather than them that fold up. If fixed pegs lean over all the way to the floor then it'll start to lift the wheels off the deck! So raise them higher up the bike and you get more lean before they touch down. As for getting your knee down.... a lot of people would ask why you want to. IGNORE THEM - IT'S JUST COOL!!!! It's all about body position, you don't even have to be going very quick. hang off the bike and lean slightly forward along the side of the tank, stick your knee out and it'll touch down. Best to be practicing on a nice long corner like the one at Mallory park for example, then you can play with body position until it works. Have fun at Snett... nb |

I had no idea that was how to do it. I'm off to buy a bike magazine today because it's scaring me how much I don't know and yet I follishly believe I can ride the bloody bike! :puzzled: |
Dont waste too much of your time with magazine's Ruthy dear, best get out and ride, especially with a small group of other DSC'ers! You'll have no trouble getting the hang of it then ;) |

Don't worry about how long your legs are - never stopped John Reynolds - my legs are only 30" too. Get out on a trackday and build up to it with half your bum off the seat and your shoulder leaning into the corner and just push on the inside bar - you'll do it. Hair-pin on the National at Rockingham is a great spot - DSC TRack Attack 3 - September 10th :D:D |

Skidlids is sending me a set of sliders so I feel honour bound to at least try to scrape 'em. All comments taken on board. Pretty unnerved by the thought that pegs scraping can lift wheels off the track. I would have thought they would just snap off under the pressure. And having been watching the World and British Superbikes this weekend, I've been thinking 'who am I kidding?':lol: But seriously, I just want to find my own limits and then push 'em a bit more each time I go on a trackday. |
Weeksy. Getting your knee down is the result high corner speed. You should be hanging off to lower the center of gravity. This will enable you to turn tighter with less lean angle. You sit there like vertical Vincent, you won't make that turn. Over to you M8 |
Don't be worrying about the pegs ruth... mine have never decked out even when I've seen off me chicken strips! And if yours are standard springy up types then it don't matter if they do - just get some titanium hero blobs for them! Make sure you get some piccies from Snett and post them up here. |
Jon, I agree with weeksy... I hang off the bike ok but usually try to lift me knee OFF the floor to get a bit more lean. Only if I think it's getting a bit too horizontal do I start pushing me slider on the deck. But then again you're right - higher corner speed = more angle, more angle = knee closer to the tarmac. Kewl! Everybody's right!!! |
Nbs996 - Re Pictures - Could be tricky to get any. As far as I know, I'm not gonna know anyone at Snetterton and besides, I don't have a digital camera. The No Limits lot have an official photographer but I assume I'd have to scan and then work out how to post the pictures. It's a lot of faffing about and technically beyond me, I should think! :( |
Weeksy changing position from one side of the bike to the other is quite simple if you know how, no clambering from one side to the other with the bike becoming unsettled. Its all in the legs and the hips. Get yourself off the the CSS, I'm afraid body position etc is not covered fully until level 3. |
No sorry Weeksy, but if you wait a mo I sure David Cook will be along and explain it better. I may be wrong, but I think you might be refering to the guys that hang their butt off the seat and leave their torso over the tank. Yeh this is purley for knee down effect. To get the most out of hanging off, you have to have your upper body as low has you can get it. This will differ from person to person. The ideal position is with you body running parallel with the bike. there is a good instance of this on DC's avitar. getting your knee down is actually very easy when you know how and doesnt necessarily mean you are going quickly, it can be done at 20 mph if you want. the knee down/corner speed/lean angle thing is definitely a learning curve and as you get quicker you may need to change your style. i was gagging to get my knee down for the first time about 4 years ago and was thrilled when i did it, now i am getting too much lean angle even though i thought i was hanging off enough (clearly not) so am now concetrating on keeping the bike more upright to get more corner speed and not worrying about trying to get my knee down. |

Well, it would appear that, technically speaking, I got my knee down for the first time, today. The very slightest of grazes has appeared on my right slider and I never felt a thing! There was not even an angelic fanfare to announce it. Oh, the disappointment ... :lol::lol::lol: |
