Computing time - WinXP service pack 2 update Just downloaded the SP2 upgrade last night and I've gotta say I'm impressed so far.... size wise for humble slow broadband its a fair size - I think it said between 70 and 180 odd Mb, my XP Pro install worked out at 96Mb and best of all after the usual reboot my PC is running noticeably faster ! Nice one Bill ! |
Guess I should add a link here for peeps who dont how auto update turned on.... ENjoy.... http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us |
Hmmm, IT dept has update available as 200+Mb |
Hmmm but will it work with my 'special' copy of XP :puzzled: |
Well mine did - :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D |
(Sound of Microsoft storm troopers kicking down door in background) :( |

Thats the full version Alan. The version that Frank is using from the update site has a 'smart' installer which figures out which bits you do and don't need and only downloads those ... the 200MB version also allows you to do administrative deployments to ... umm, whatever ... |
Installed it about 3 weeks ago and haven't really noticed anything different to be honest, except that damn security alerts in IE now which jump at just about anything on a webpage.... |
Incidentally, the security improvements they have added, IE settings as Antonye is finding out about, and changes to the personal firewall have stopped some application from working as they do normally. Great from a security point of view but for the average user who isn't aware of which tcp or udp ports their app uses to communicate on it's a bit of a sh*tter - just be careful. When you install it make sure you choose the option to backup the files so you can roll it back if you need to!!! |
Mine was a 97Mb download last night, whilst this was running I decided to look at the requirements for installation etc... Did you know you need 1.8Gb of free disk space for the update ! :cough: |

Ah, but it does pop up a warning, much like ZoneAlarm, when a program tries to access an unknown port. Did it with MSN Messenger for me, but I've since turned off the firewall as I don't need *3* on my system ;) |
I work for a software company and this SP2 update is causing not only our software but also alot of others to have problems with users who have updated to another buggy bill gates release.:( |
It's not buggy at all, it just fundamentally changes the way the OS interacts with the network - which is where it causes grief. |

You may live to regret that Antonye!!! In my 8'ish years of working with MS products from support through to infrastructure architecture I have NEVER seen an SP come out and not require a hotfix or something because of a bug! In fact, I might do a quick search to see about any post-SP2 hotfixes ... if they're not there now, I'll do another tomorrow ..... why do you think there is a term bleeding-edge!!! |
But then again I might go to the pub instead and look tomorrow .... hrmmm, decisions decisions .... |
TP, I might go to the pub for the next 3 bludy weeks cos that's how long it's gonna take me to download 100-200meg on a crappy 41k connection... Damn rural areas that can't get broadband....:( |
Guido, U2U me an address and I'll stick it on a cd for you. |
