ST2 Headlamp upgrade - Help!

For the first time in ages I was out for a long period after dark. I had forgotten just how poor the headlamp is on dipped beam. On unlit roads it was quite scary unless I was crawling along.

I know the charging system on early ST2s is marginal at best, so fitting higher wattage bulbs is probably not the answer. I was considering going the LED route.

I have seen an advert from a company called LEDPERF.com, offering a £41 per bulb replacement. Has anyone tried these or something similar and if so, was it worth it and were there any issues with fitting or the heat produced in use?

Any help/suggestions would be gratefully received.

Phil

Hi Phil,

I recently fitted an LED bulb (eBay special) for someone to a SuperDuke KTM and the results were much better than I expected for the no-make brand.

Installation was average, little space to work in the KTM headlight and the bulb has a sizeable internal fan however, the beam and especially the very wide spread were impressive.

On my own ST4s I went to HID which I found a good improvement on the low beam, a bit fiddly, 2 line boxes to install, but worked flawlessly for the 7 years I had the bike with it installed.

Found a thread for you here - good luck

I had a similar problem with a Honda CBR400RR that I am rebuilding. The headlight bulbs are 35/60W which are obviously not very bright (35W) for a headlight, but they're also £25 each and both had blown!

I thought that I could just fit 55/60W H4 bulbs but it turns out that the keying on the bulb base (the pegs) are different, and running the bike with 2x 55W headlights isn't good for the reg/rec and wiring either... forum reports of melting bikes!

So I found some cheap H4 LEDs on ebay and snipped off the tabs, leaving the main (12 o'clock) in place as this fits.

The results are amazing and I'm convinced that they are actually better than the original 35/60W bulbs and they're 1/5th the price!

They are generic H4 LED in the style shown, but I bought from a UK seller (hate waiting for stuff from China!) and cost £4.09 each delivered!

Many thanks - a nice little project for the winter!
