changing chains
 
when changing a chain, do you have to take the slave cyclinder off?

I got sent a closed loop chain as part of the final drive kit from Duc. I can't get the front sprocket and chain off in one piece, the slave cyclinder over hangs by a few mm and blocks it :( so I think I'll have the same trouble getting the new one on. So is there a trick to it? is it possible to remove the chain without breaking it?

So 2 questions;
1. do I need to remove the slave cyclinder?
2. if so, is there anything I should know about it (ie. will it leak fluid everywhere if I do?)

you will have to remove the slave cylinder and no it wont leak. three bolts hold it on
2nd i am not a 100% with the st range, but you normaly have to cut the chain in half, This can be done with a dremmel or grinding tool, to grind off one of the links rivets in the chain

Chain passes through frame so will have to be cut.

Hence why it still attached to frame in my avatar.


Just realised this is refering to ST's so ignore me as I don't have a clue if it does pass through frame.

No the chain doesn't got through the frame so as long as you take off all the stuff that gets in the way, like the footrest (you should be able to drop the footrest and gear linkage out of the way), the exhaust and the slave cylinder, you should be able to fiddle the chain in with the new sprocket.

bah my slave cylinder has a bolt with a head made out of cheese so I had to break the chain instead :/
Oh well, I'll let Duc Cov sort it out at the next service coz I'll get a new higher rated slave cyclinder put on.
