750Ss mileage

Having originally opted for the 750 rather than the 900 because of the smaller engine's sweetness and alleged greater strength.....

(That was seven years ago, I realise)

....I wonder how many people have clocked up a decent mileage on a 750 (Monster, or SS, carbed or injected). Say over 20k? Is there anything that tends to fail at higher mileages?

Just pondering because mine's done over 24,000 miles and in all that time has eaten one spark plug and a couple of neutral light switches, and that's it. I'm beginning to *expect* something to go pop.

Did about 36000m on my 750SS before it met its end at the hands of White Van Man. :o

Can't remember any major probs except that I managed to bend a valve somehow very slightly ("missed" gearchange?). Despite it being 6 months outside warranty, I managed to get it all replaced FOC with the support of the dealer (the late lamented Merlin Ducati in Cardiff).

Neutral light switches, I had a few (never a prob on the 748, though).
Paint lifted quite badly on the LHS engine casing (it was a half-faired model, and used all year round).
Original clutch was still going strong at the time of its demise. They're not as sweet as the dry ones, though, anywhere near. Whether that's the clutch, or the gearbox I don't know. But all wet-clutch Dukes I've ridden have seemed a bit clunky to me.

Not "Honda" clunky, of course, just a bit...

erm, I hope the belts have been changed at some point previously or I'd be getting worried.

A 'good' MOT would pull up most chassis type problems (hopefully) - otherwise my only engine probs have been starter motor and battery !!!

Good luck - Frank

Well, I haven't got to that sort of milleage yet, but after buying a 800ssie new about months back Im coming to my first service so another 2.5 years and I should be clocking around 30k miles or more (everyday bike).

So far:

ECU failure
Fuel pump failure
Fairing melted on LHS lower (exhaust not lined up).
LHS exhaust baffle come loose.

Belts changed every 6k on mine. Oil and filter changed every 3k, and fully synthetic oil always used.

I kinda thought you would Neil :D

16k miles on my 750Sport, no mileage related difficulties so far. Seems to want to eat chains though, been through one and the second one is on its way out. Maybe that's normal though? I don't know, chains are primitive IMO. :)

Neil
You say fully synth every 3k miles. Isnt the 750 a wet clutch, and Id always heard that semi was best as fully synthetic could cause clutch probs, like slipping? Maybe its an old wives tale, not doubt our Nelly will put me (or you) straight on that point
