i am in the same boat and have been advised to stay away from the r model if its your first 748. i think it all depends on waht you want it for and how much you have to spend really.

if you want the r go for a 2002 model that should have the race cans, cover and paddock stand with it i beleive

I've recently got an S, and am very pleased with it. I understand that the R has different characteristics especially at low speeds due to the difference in the injection method. As deej says, it depends what sort of riding you do. The S seems to be fine for all sorts. I'm sure some of the R owners can enlighten you more.

Whichever you go for, they are fine bikes. Good luck!

Go for the R - you'll only spend lots of cash on a lesser model trying to get it like the R anyway!!!:o:o:o:o:o

I agree, I have the R version (for the time being anyway...selling to pay for next yrs racing!) and it comes with the whole lot....marchesinis,ohlins,showa,slipper etc etc.

You will get very bored with the standard version very quickly, there is no top end at all! and you will have far more flexibility with your set up options...

do it baby!!

deej 10-Oct-2004 10:50

what they say is true, i'd love a r but just cant afford it at the mo

it looks a much sexier bike than a standard bip

if you ride a lot on the road will you notice the xtra power for the cash, the r is till holding its value quite well, you can buy a 749 new for less than what some dealers are asking secong hand

ducati aylesbury had a 2001 748r in red with only 300 miles on the clock for 7499 the other week if thats any good to you

redsp 10-Oct-2004 12:03

Not sure what what's been done to my sp but it is a good bit quicker than the r i owned a couple of years ago and also my mates 2003 r......

It surely cant be standard.

keith_mann1959 11-Oct-2004 12:07

go for the R, i've had a BP and now a latest version R. Even use it 2 up sometimes.
Its got the wider belts, slipper clutch, Ti rods and all sorts of other goodies.
Oh yeah and looaddssss more go!
