Oil change

Hi all
Just recently discovered this board having bought a 2002 ST4s. I have found loads of useful information and useful tips.

I am changing the oil and filter. I want to check and clean the filter screen while I am at it. But I can't get the filter screen out. on other Dukes I have owned this usually slides out when I have removed the outer cap. On my new machine I can't get the screen out. It seems to have a hexagonal socket (same size as the outer cap). I have tried unsrewing it with a suitable socket but it won't budge. Is there a "trick" to getting this out?

The gauze filter should unscrew out of the casing using the same size hex bit as you used to get the cap off. 14mm I think.
If it's been fitted hamfisted then it could tight. Get the hex bit in and "lean on it"..........

Sounds like my 2001 748.

Use a 14mm socket bit with an extension bar, not an actual Allen key (Halfords sell 'em). It may be pretty tight, (mine was), but there's no mystique to it.

Thanks for your input everyone

Now I know it definitely screws out I've had another go. Today the damn thing came undone quite easily!!!
I can only imagine the engine got cooler overnight and made the bolt a little less tight.

Daryl
