need some hard drive help please...

My hard drive is starting to make some funny noises! I want to install a new drive as an exact replica of the old one...

But because computers hate me so much, I'm assuming it's not just a case of copying all the files from old to new???

Nick, in the past I've done such a thing with Norton ghost program. Copies every last detail to the new drive.
I think the drives have to be the same size though??

I'm sure you'll get more constructive advice pretty soon

Thanks nelly
I want to get a bigger drive at the same time.

I do love computers computers! Why can't I just type " copy c:\* d:\* "

Which drive is it ?

Is it C drive / the one with windows installed on ?

Or do you only have one hard drive thats partitioned ?

You can use ghost as Nelly has stated, but the drives don't have to be the same size, so you can go big if you wanted to, depending on your system etc.

I'd be tempted to backup your data, burn it to CD whatever.... and do a fresh install of your OS and apps onto the new drive, OK, so it's a pain, and will take time, but you're starting with a blank page and any possible corruption, bloated registry etc will be eliminated.

I've only got one drive... it's C and D on the same disk.

I want to replace the noisy old 20Gb thing that's about to turn up it's toes with an 80Gb jobbie. Some software that does like nelly says would be good but it has to be suitable for a stupid person and have a button that says "make this one look like that one"!

seems good jpm, and I don't mind wasting a day doing it, but I'd like to keep all my customisations, and some of the apps (like my wireless network) were a pain to get working properly! It would just never be the same again, I'd keep finding the handy little apps missing that I've found over the years...

Think I'll take the easy option and duplicate it with Ghost.
